The low-end streaming-only steamboxes might be ARM-based in which case you won't be able to, but anything capable of local rendering will support windows.
Nah, I can't see that happening because Valve said "Hundreds of great games are already running natively on SteamOS." which refers to the already available Linux games on Steam. And those run on x86 architecture.

Yes, but they also expressed plans on having a streaming-only solution several months ago.

I guess they could go atom though for those.

Well, you can't really ship PC hardware with locked bootloaders and no root access.

Sure, I'm not worried about access. It would still be an annoying hassle to have to reinstall the OS when purchasing a machine, though.

Anyway, this is the controller thread, so I don't want to derail.

Really it should be possible to stream big picture mode from a host pc without needing a steamOS, and have a tiny box that just handles the hdmi and inputs.

Creating another generic Xbox or PS controller ripoff wouldn't have done anyone any good. I already have several 360 controllers for my PC. I don't know if this Steam controller will be great or not, but I am excited to try it. It could be the first major gamepad advancement in the last 15 years (sorry WiiU).

It certainly looks interesting, will wait and try somebody else's before I decide if it's any good, looks tell me nothing even if it's kinda odd looking might still play great I'm my hands.

Ugh. All this Android talk made me realize, manufacturers could shit all over Steam Machines with their awful UI stuff, just like they do Android, right?

Not necessarily.

Valve has said that Steam OS is free to license, that doesn't mean that every manufacturer is able to get a license, or do whatever they want with that license.

I have a feeling that Valve will heavily standardize what is allowed to be an official Steam Machine. Sure anyone can get the OS for free and do whatever they want to do with it, but Valve could prevent them through licensing from being legally allowed to sell it as a Steam Machine.

Did Valve let anything slip on how the wireless would be implemented? Bluetooth or some wifi-direct solution like x360/xb1 would be the obvious choices, but any hints dropped from Valve so far?

I'm interested in how a pad would feel simulating a jog wheel, complete with feedback as you rotate your thumb around.

That sounds super interesting, i bet it would feel weird as hell at first.

EDIT: Well shit, i wonder if you could make the whole outer pad a wheel for a racing game, i bet that would be cool with haptic feedback.

The controller is just frikkin' AWESOME! To me this looks like the first TRUE innovation in years, at least since the Wii Remote. Kudos to Valve!
While it is looking "weird" at first sight we all should trust in Gaben. I think this thing will nicely fit into your hands as well as delivering what it is supposed to. Let's wait what those first 300 beta-testers have to say about it.

That's the neat thing about this. While it can simulate analogs or D-pads, it can also simulate a wide variety of other controls that have never really been used in conventional controllers. So for a racing game, you could turn by "rotating" the pad. In a flight sim, you could use the left pad as a joystick and the right pad as a throttle. Heck, we could finally get a podracing game with proper controls.

This controller reminds me that traditional thumbstick controllers are awful for FPS we just got used to it. If this works it is going to be epic. For a serios call of duty player this could become a game changer and a true next gen experience.

The prototype that will be deployed with the steam machines beta is USB only, so we probably won't know until closer to launch.

I don't blame anyone for being initially apprehensive, at least until we get more feedback. Valve made this controller in order to move all of Steam's diverse library to the living room, including games that are ill-suited to traditional controllers. While I fully believe that Valve came up with the best possible solution, it doesn't necessarily mean that it came up with an objectively good solution.

Still, early reports are extremely encouraging and I can't wait to hold this thing in my hands and explore its full potential. Yeah, I know that sounded dirty but it was fully intended :D Devices like the Oculus Rift and the Steam Controller is just the kind of innovation that I expected from next gen. Let's hope they're every bit as good as they seem.

The controller looks hawt, hopefully it will be comfy and practical. SteamOS sounds like the best and most logical move for all PC gamers, I am very excited to shed win7 and convert to one that just makes sense. Hip pip hooray!

he makes it sound kinda strange tbh

If he went into the meeting with the objective of using exactly like a 360 controller, and came out of it saying stuff like "I don't think gaming would miss a beat" if this replaced it is essentially all I need to hear.

If this can function around as well as a 360 controller for console games like he alludes to, while also bridging a gap between PC genres that standard controllers haven't been able to yet, then I say the strange design is worth it. Still, I'm waiting to see more impressions on those PC genres but apparently Civ V works fine.

It's probably the center of the left pad. Look at the symbols. O - movement. O - Shift, filled circle - SP.. which I assume is Spacebar

or maybe it means the whole surface, not just the center. Like if you click on it anywhere, it jumps.

O - you just put you thumb on it
O - your pressing a bit harder on it to sprint
filled cirlce - click anywhere to jump

actually the O is sprint near the edges

that 3d model is unofficial, looks nothing like the photograph. the pads are concave for example

I'll want it for schmups if it offers the same smoothness and precision that I get on a Cave game on mobile.

Yes, I'm bad with precise maneuvering on a stick, but that might be thanks to the DS3's huge dead-zone.
