Is The Wonderful 101 the most voluminous and varied action game ever? I said WOW!

I ask because I'm apparently less than halfway through my first playthrough (now at Operation 005-B, on Normal), and I'm continually bowled over by how this game continues to relentlessly one-up itself with hyper-climatic boss fights, set-pieces and one-off gimmicks that incorporate all kinds of different viewpoints, vehicles, etc. And they're all well-designed and FUN. It feels like a journey of RE4 proportions, with the same rollicking pace, to boot, but supercharged with the unapologetic zeal that comes with the character action genre.

This already feels like TWICE the content and 10 times the variety of Metal Gear Rising, and again, I'm less than halfway through. The sheer amount of stuff to tinker with is obscene -- morphs to unlock and purchase, skills and custom blocks to equip, power-ups to collect and create, action figures to acquire, enemy files and hero files to find, bottlecaps (achievements) to earn, new heroes to recruit, the ability to level up individual heroes, etc. There is an exhaustive amount of optional lore to read through, including a bestiary, and apparently when you beat the game, a 3D model viewer for the absurd number of characters unlocks, as well as higher difficulties.

Not to mention, there's like a zillion secrets in every level, including some devilishly well-hidden areas barely hinted at off-screen (
the red line on the ground in Operation 004 leading down to the pipe...
). There's invisible stuff to uncover by circling it with the Wonder Liner, there are windows and portholes and other gaps that produce treasure if you send your men up the walls to reach them. Tons of stuff is fully destructible, showering you with treasure. There's just so much to DO and so much to UNCOVER.

And then there's the core combat. Mechanically and conceptually, the game is constantly introducing new things. In terms of tactics, there are so many ways you can approach the wide variety of enemies: Mobbing them to stun and stagger, launching them into the air, juggling them with multiple morphs, chaining combos with Dodge Offset, slowing time, bouncing attacks with Unite Guts, dodging and dropping mines with Unite Spring (and then recruiting the enemies!) -- the list goes on and on. Add to this the way you can modify the power of your attacks by pumping more heroes into them, and it's dizzying, all the ways you can approach each situation!

Now I'm not an expert on the action game genre, so I'm asking those who have played Ninja Gaiden Black and other titles I haven't gotten around to yet: Is TW101 the most voluminous and varied action game ever? Because I'm seriously blown away.

A Neiteio thread? About The Wonderful 101? This is my jam.

I can't wait to see what you have to say once you've finished up the final mission. Much like Bayonetta and Viewtiful Joe, The Wonderful 101 is a voyage in continuously going up-hill and getting more insane, and ends with a fantastic bang.

Bronetta

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Only on chapter 5? You haven't seen anything yet. It's certainly up there though.

MGR was made in under a year. Wonderful 101 is Platinum's biggest title to date. A more appropriate comparison would be Bayonetta-W101 since Kamiya directed both.

The idea that I've "seen nothing yet" relative to all the game has to offer is just mind-boggling to me. I already feel like I've seen enough content and variety to constitute entire games. The mechanics per capita, so to speak, is INSANE.

And I can already tell this is one of those games where you'll feel compelled to go through it all over again, shooting for higher ranks on higher difficulties. And if one tried to unearth every secret in this game without a guide... Would that even be possible??

I'm quite happy to go on board as saying that W101 is to the Wii U what RE4 was to the Gamecube.

Only with less (ie none) chances of a port.

You haven't even fought Operation 005's boss

lol
Should I be excited or dreading it?! This
fire world
is pretty crazy so far. I mean, in the last mission, there was an epic one-on-one dual (or rather,
100-on-100
) and some crazy sequence where I
tunneled through ore with a drilling machine
. It just went straight from one to the other like it was no big deal, yet it was a wild switch-up -- and one the game executed flawlessly. Not skipping a single beat. Simply brilliant.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
You're not at the end, so you really have no idea. No idea.

But yeah, in terms of content, production, and sense of journey as well as scale, The Wonderful 101 is easily one of the most comprehensive and "complete" games I've played probably since Resident Evil 4. It's easily one of the most diverse and ambitious projects in the character action game genre, and certainly Platinum's biggest undertaking.

and more bashing, I guess that this game will be like wind waker, in a few years people who dished the game will look back and they will realize that it was great

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Zero chances, it's a Nintendo published IP, it's never appearing on other consoles. Get a Wii U.

But yeah, this game, this fucking game! It gets so much right. It's impossible to be bored playing it.

Yeah seriously, if you think it's varied so far...

It's really easy to see why this is Platinum's most expensive game once you play it.
Man, you have no idea how excited that makes me. I'm already itching to replay fights like the
003-C boss
, yet so much new stuff awaits. I'm hard-pressed to think of what they could do that they haven't already done. The chapters I've played feel so incredibly dense... How could it possibly continue to escalate?!

If the sales are any indication, it's like people hate varied, fun, exciting gameplay and just want to shoot dudes in the head over and over and over and over and over...

OK, I'm done.

But I agree with you 100% OP. It's a shame more people aren't playing.

It's horrible to entertain the thought that this really might be one of the last games of its kind. :(

I kind of got annoyed by all the genre-shifting parts, especially in the latter half where I just wanted to improve my skills.

They wouldn't be that bad if they were put in for fun and didn't contribute to your overall rank to the point they do.

I could see that being a valid critique of the game for those pursuing Pure Platinum ranks. A lot of the genre-shifting bits come out of nowhere and so you're learning them from the ground up, and they're usually in the middle of a normal mission so they're not as easy to revisit, I'd imagine. Still, the ones I've seen so far are all so well done, so I think it'd be fun putting in the extra effort to perfect them. :)

The game is so full just from playing the story for the first time that I don't see how people can play more than a few missions in a single sitting. It took a lot out of me just to play Missions 4-6 in one sitting.

This thread is making me rethink getting the WiiU or at least purchasing W101 before it becomes rare...

Sucks that my plate is so full right now or else I would have jumped without thought and just based on the goodwill here.

I'm only in chapter 3 and already amazed at how many options there are in combat to just fuck things up. It's kind of overwhelming actually. I'm REALLY looking forward to replaying the missions once everything is open to me.

That this is such a commercial failure is truly a tragedy.

Just got my Windwaker bundle in the mail and this game. Currently updating the console and this will be the first game I play.

Well, yeah, nobody ever bashed RE4. And to be fair they're not bashing this either. They're just not 'getting' it. It's a game that is decidedly critic-unfriendly, and it's not getting the praise it deserves from players because of the Wii U's lacklustre install base/attach rate. But it's early days yet.

I have every confidence that future LTTP threads for W101 will be... Wonderful.

You're actually a little over halfway, but the back-end of the game is incredibly substantial. To answer your question, yes, it might be my favourite action game ever after RE4.

How could it possibly continue to escalate?!

Just you wait. Oh, just you wait.

You know, when I played Rising at the beginning of the year, I thought that no game would top its sheer insanity

Wonderful 101 is 101 times crazier than Rising - it really is no competition. Even the best DBZ fanfic power fantasy looks like garbage next to the insanity that is the last third of the game

This game will still make you go Woah and WOW a few more times until you reach the last level.

It is absolutely packed with content. And don't think you'll see everything playing through it only once. There will still be more skills and secrets to unlock after you are finished with the story.

<3

Seriously, update the thread once you beat it. I want to see your impressions once (endgame spoiler)
the game goes full Gainax.

The final levels are pretty good but IMO it's partially ruined from the overly blatant references: I'm of the opinion that the third boss was the best one with the final boss second.

There's a crapload of replayability elements though.

Most insane, over-the-top game of all time. The ending in particular is basically all Gainax animes rolled into one, on eleven. Maybe twelve.

I am not even close to finished and each boss could be the final boss in any game. Shit gets so freaking awesome and incredible. This game is my killer app.

I honestly feel like a badass playing this game, like a real super hero and drawing shapes for QTE makes things so much varied instead of typical button presses like other games.

I wished this game got more sales because this is one game that deserves it for sure.

Now, back to playing and blowing my eyes out of its sockets.

It's not even solely about Ranking (but they will be a pain on replays when I try for rank), they're just a bit frustrating even though you have unlimited re-tries, especially if you're like me and you're not familiar with the genres they pay homage too.

Like I'm having fun improving my skills in the main game, and then this long mini-game pops up...I try my best, and have fun, don't get me wrong, but I have to quickly learn a new game. Then I'm thrown back into the main game, and I have to readjust quickly and I end up messing up.

But you know, I'm gonna replay it some and being familliar with the segments now, my opinion might change. I am looking forward to discovering all the secrets within the levels through the Wonder Liner/Wonder Hammer, I found quite a bit through my first go-around, but I definitely missed a lot during the early missions before I picked up on the secret cues.

I just beat this earlier today and I was so impressed with how the game keeps on delivering right up to the last second. Can't wait to dive back in on hard mode and unlock even more stuff!

They could top this game by, you know, putting less stuff in it and cleaning up what they have. Seriously, this game is so packed with stuff that it's too much. So many complex and overlapping abilities and systems and weird menus and options. Most of them feed back into the gameplay, which is complex enough (in a good way). But then the actual clarity of the combat is seriously, seriously stressed in this game. You really can't tell what's going on most of the time until you simply memorize how everything works.

For shear creativity, bold new ideas, and spirit this game is over the top. It's one of my favorites of the year. But in no way do I consider good design "throw everything in because woot it's all fun regardless of how it all works together or how complex things become."

Theres a lot of that stuff for sure. It's great first time through but I can't help but find it a bit of a bummer on replays. Some of it just isn't as fun as the main course.

edit: talking about the genre shifting stages. Theres so many of them.

Well I guess we should start organizing the candle light vigil for Neiteio's speedy recovery after he actually finishes the game.

Man is gonna need a seat belt for the ending
