47 games in the released part, 53 games in the future part. Compared to last month, this month doesnt have as many high profile releases, but no doubt still as worthwhile with lots of interesting titles.

We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

zxb7SVW.jpg

http://www.indiedb.com/members/ascendaon/downloads/ascendaon-v10

First-Person Adventure game that will immerse players into an awe-inspiring frozen wasteland. Use your trusty Grapple Gun and Rock Climbing Rope to scavenge for resources scattered around the environment and reach the top of the mountain to radio for help . . . but from whom?

Bear Steams Bravo: First Episode - Free (PC, Browser)
is2UtUjXGMEhK.gif

http://www.bearstearnsbravo.com/

Part of a 5 year ARG campaign between the PronunciationBook youtube channel and horse_ebooks twitter account, Bear Stearns Bravo harkens back to a certain era of game that apes the Choose Your Own Adventure novels of the 80s and 90s which in itself was aping RPGs. The characters, dialog, and production values all scream intentional cheese which is going to turn some off, however. The second episode can be purchased for 7$.

Boson X - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
screenshot16.png

www.boson-x.com

It's like someone mixed a warp drive with a Super Hexagon-induced nightmare. It's challenging and addictive and the visual design is very cool.

Brawlin' Sailor - Free (PC, Browser)
qSqN7OG.png

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/624426

A very short (5-7 minutes) sidescrolling brawler that has more to it than it seems at first. Recommended to play through for the little details.

Cubic Climber - Free (PC)
IFTecoq.png

Ethan: Meteor Hunter - Free Demo/ $9,99 (PC)
zKEmuwe.jpg

http://www.ethan-game.com/buy/#Classic

Eurogamer: "A brutal platformer riddled with inventive puzzles.", Indiestatik: "It makes Limbo look like Barneys Hide and Seek. This is the holy grail of puzzle platform junkies, the creme-de-la-creme!"

FarSky - Free Alpha (PC, Mac, Linux)
screenshot4.png

http://www.farskygame.com/

You’ve got to reassemble your achy breaky craft and just, well, survive. Good luck with both, however, as crushing depths are not kind to the easily popped jelly balloons we call bodies, and you’ll have to contend with increasing water pressure, decreasing temperature, and more survival factors (in addition to sharks, giant monster wheel things, and extremely mean jellyfish) along the way.

Fortify: Special Edition - Free Demo/ $3,99 (PC, Mac)
hmkvSxc.png

A remake of the 2010 freeware release of Fortify. Fortify Special Edition is a real-time strategy game with a tower defense feel. De54HcR.jpg

http://mediatonicgames.com/games/foul-play

A 2D side-scrolling brawler set on a Victorian stage, complete with an audience, Foul Play lets two people play cooperatively as Baron Dashforth and his assistant Scampwick as they act out the “completely accurate” story of the Baron’s life. Players who loved it compared it to the Coop awesomeness of Castle Crashers.

W8R7G2F.png

http://www.desura.com/games/gravity-bomb

Gravity Bomb is a 2D physics puzzle platformer shooter where you must jump, wall-run, and swap-gravity in a unique way to advance to the next level. You'll need to use your shooting skills, platforming, and brain to beat it! The game's style is very calm and light though the puzzles and levels are demanding in both reflexes and smarts.

iTX4XtMWBAQrR.jpg
tn

Peek into the private lives and thoughts of important figures and random people who lived prior to the Year Zero event that happened on the colony ship Mugunghwa. Heavily recommended to play Analogue first.

D10d5FA.png

http://www.matthewbrowngames.com/hexcells.html

Combines elements of Minesweeper and Picross; made by Matthew Brown (Sentinel). There are 29 puzzles, which seems reasonable to me, especially with the later ones being quite hard.

Still in alpha and doesnt have any story content yet, but its coming along very nicely.

briWq7H.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/226960/

Ironclad Tactics is a fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in an alternate history Civil War - with steam-powered military robots, created by the SpaceChem and Infiniminer devs Zachtronics. It has an action timer, so its not traditional turn based, but after the initial learning curve, the game has its hooks in me. Satisfying deck building, quests, card level ups and an intriguing story setting make for a very entertaining game.

Kaiser Earth - Free Demo/ $2,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
iG6U5uS.png

http://www.evilmountain.com/kaiser-earth/

Ship building felt like a 2D Starmade, which is cool. Gameplay is a mix of real time/pause-and-plan tactical combat against enemies (with a more action focused "dual stick" control scheme coming in an update). You have complete control over each module, from individually firing thrusters in different direction and to aiming your weapons. It takes some getting used to, but I think the game has a lot of potential

but those will be fixed with the new images anyways. I'll keep poking around to see if there's any other oddities.

Didnt see someone mentioning it was released in the Sept thread, but put it into the released section now.

I think I included it in the #SS post as it was one of the Ludum Dare entries, but I haven't checked it yet. Oh, and is there a demo of Always Sometimes Monsters I've missed somehow?

On a slightly more sad note: The weekly Indie releases youtube videos that we had until last month wont be included anymore. I think they dropped it because they didnt get enough traffic/clicks, and I can understand that its too much effort for like 200 viewers each week.

Yeah, I put all the SS entries into the future section by default. If no one else posts about them again, I assume they are still... in the future :p

I dont think there is an open demo, yet. You can preorder the game, but that wont give you access. There is only a showfloor demo for Pax apparently.

It does, you can preview posts and threads before posting, but you obviously cant do that as long as GAF is down which was during the same time today and yesterday for me, so I couldnt work on that two days in a row. Bad luck this time, but oh well.

Yeah, I just checked and there's only a pre-order option on Humble store, so there's no point in keeping it in the RRI section. Sorry for pointing out all these stuff:D

Let's discuss this article: Are Indie Games That Special?
Well, more like let's tear it apart and rant at how wrong it is
Here's an excerpt:
Indie games, supposedly, have a lot more diversity. This diversity takes the form of games such as Braid, the 2D platformer that kind of started the indie game craze; then there is that dark and moody 2D platformer, Limbo. There is alsoFEZ, a 2D platformer with a dimension-shifting mechanic, Outland, a 2D platformer with a color-shifting mechanic, Cave Story, a Metroidvania-style 2D platformer, Super Meat Boy, a hardcore, 2D platformer… then there is Spelunky, Trine, Terraria, Towerfall, The Swapper, VVVVVV, Rogue Legacy, Henry Hatsworth, I Wanna Be the Guy, Eversion, Closure, and Thomas Was Alone--all 2D platformers, and we are even going to see more come out with Mighty No. 9 and Murasaki Baby. But indie games aren’t just making games in the same genre, right?

Full Bore impressions
Trailer and images at my blog
---
Nine months after a successful Kickstarter campaign, Whole Hog Games have released their puzzle adventure game Full Bore. It's a charming game that combines tricky block based puzzles with open world exploration and an interesting story.

You're just a lonely boar who finds himself trapped in the mysterious mining operation deep beneath the earth. Weird machinery and logs of anomalies hint at some unnatural happenings in the tunnels and bored out caverns and as your adventure progresses, the pieces slowly come together. The world of Full Bore is sprawling and expansive and quite pretty, stretching from dark lava filled depths to the sunny green surface; doorways found throughout the world lead to puzzle filled rooms and other areas. Puzzles revolve around pushing and manipulating blocks, each with their own properties and function, as well as exploring and digging your way to new areas. A wonderful lighting system gives each location its own atmosphere and ambiance.

Right now, purchasing Full Boar gives you the first half of the game, titled The First Dig, which offers about seven hours of puzzles and exploration. The second half will be added later in an update and will include even more diverse locations such as ancient trap filled temples, abandoned industrial ruins, and more of the surface wilderness.

Did they already announce whats going to be different from 1 or what they added?

Steam Workshop support for mods, skins and that sort of stuff. He has been creating new modes/mods that include Air, a sidescroller, and a 3 player puzzle game. It's also on a new engine (Unity), so it should run better and on more platforms I guess. It supports Soundcloud, and leaderboards are now separated by mode/difficulty.

Incognita and Valdis Story are out? Might need to grab those.

Ethan: Meteor Hunter seems perfect for speedrunning. Also, like Ghost of a Tale, more playable mice in games!

Proxy Blade :O I want this...

Can't believe no one here is talking about Dethlands. I shall start :)

I wrote a spot up on it over at IndieGames.

DethLands' roots are firmly planted in the old school, with games like Castlevania, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Mega Man and Super Mario Bros 2 cited as inspiration. The team is focusing on tight, challenging platforming, without crossing into the realm of frustration. Players will direct Golgoth through the levels, using his signature headbang maneuver to attack enemies with his hair.

There are four subweapons hidden in treasure chests that expand your offensive abilities, as well as a handful of static abilities that buff your attributes as well. The details of these are being kept quiet for now, though these accessories are close to the heart of metal fashion and interests. All of these abilities will help you get through the game's levels and their branching paths, as well as do battle with the eight or more bosses.

The soundtrack (preview below) is being put together by Tokinsom, who is using his background as a musician to produce authentic metal songs in chiptune form.

Reading the article looks like he knows only the "big" indie titles. He wrote about the vastly number of indie 2D platformers but fails to realize that these games are acclaimed not because they are in that genre but because they bring interesting ideas and something new.

Braid, for example, is a work of art because of its time mechanics, mechanics strikingly similar to Prince of Persia
Braid is not only praised only because the time mechanics but for it interesting history, beautiful artstyle, smart puzzles and how the time mechanic has different approaches in each set of levels. If I remember correctly the time mechanic in the PS2 PoP series is you rewinding if you failed a jump and other similar things, and once you're without any sand of time is game over. The mechanics are similar but how each game use it is very different.

In 2012, Call of Duty had the best-selling title, sure. But immediately following it was Madden, and following that we saw games such as Assassin’s Creed III, Lego Batman, and even Just Dance 4. There’s your diversity right there

Three yearly franchises... How is having the same yearly series in the top charts advocating for diversity? He sounds like we don't have diversity in the indie games released, just this year we had:
  • Papers, Please!
  • Skullgilrs (the PC version)
  • Cart Life
  • Divekick
  • Dysfunctional systems
  • Candy Box
  • A Dark Room
  • Save the Date

Yeah, that article is a bit crazy. I don't particularly enjoy 2D platformers, and I still find a shit ton of stuff I want to try each month in these threads alone.

I'm very tempted to withdraw my Cornerstone pledge and support Proxy Blade instead. Not sure I'll even be able to because it's an international campaign, not US, and I might not even be able to run the game on my laptop, but damn, I want this game to succeed

Doing a Reddit trade: A Valley Without Wind or La Mulana? Valley's demo was cool but I remember you guys raving about Mulana in one of the threads.

Do you like hard games? Do you don't have a problem in eventually looking in a guide to finish a game?

If yes grab La-Mulana.
