List of the devs of HL3 & L4D3 and what the hell Church & Hocking are working on

So are we taking bets yet? Will these new Valve games be on consoles or remain Steam exclusive this time around?

No reason not to be on consoles.

The people who are super excited to play HL3 or L4D3 on consoles would probably not be quick to buy in to the Steam ecosystem.

Plus, hell, extra sales and thus extra money.

Left 4 Dead 3 and Half-Life 3 will be released on Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and depending on how far away they are and how advanced their technology, potentially Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (though I doubt the latter if they're not releasing any time soon).

That hurts even more!

What are you doing Clint? You got a guy who worked on the good Splinter Cells and a guy who worked on Thief and you can't put 2 and 2 together there?

Whatever Clint was working on at Lucasarts was almost definitely a first-person shooter. He talked about gun gameplay, or "gunplay", quite a lot in his columns with Edge Magazine, and I imagine he was enticed to work with Doug Church, who is one of the lead developers on L4D3, once it was obvious his Lucasarts project was going nowhere. It makes plenty of sense for him to move from one shooter to the next.

Plus, if it makes you feel any better - and I could honestly care less how you feel because all you do is complain anyways - L4D3 will probably be significantly different from the first two - considering the talent working on it, and the long development cycle.

I may be wrong here , but i thought Valve and MS had a big falling out over some promises that where broken ?
and steam support for portal 2 on ps3 only and such Happened because of it .

Did that get resolved ?

No chance for Wii U?

I don't know, but these things can change quickly. Orange Box on 360 was made by Valve but outsourced for PS3. Then L4D wasn't even made for PS3.

Then things changed and we got PSN-Steam wedding and Portal 2 best on PS3. Was that due to Valve being upset about Xbox patch costs?

Things could easily change again. But as it stands now, Valve is trying to make Linux a thing, so I assume MS isn't thrilled with that (although MS doesn't really make a ton off of PC gaming).

All signs point to no, but the way people get cunty and root for console exclusives to happen makes me kinda want to stoop to that level and wish it was exclusive.

Because fuck those people.

Nah, I am not aware of such a thing.

What's interesting is that Valve teased the Portal 2 editor (aka DLC #2) would come to Xbox 360, but ultimately it didn't come to either of the consoles. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=446757

Is there a chance that Steamworks make it onto the Xbox?

Maybe, we’ll see. That’s something Microsoft will has to decide. There’s some things going on with Portal 2 right now, but we’ll see.

Will cross-platform play only be across PC, Mac and PS3? Why not the 360?

Getting Steam on the 360 is not something we’re able to do right now, and that’s how matchmaking works. Microsoft are working with us for some other stuff you’re going to see in Portal 2 that’s kind of interesting – originally I was supposed to come over here and talk about that, because the Portal 2 DLC was supposed to be out by now – but you’ll see that we’re doing some more work with them. I think that as they get older and older, the consoles are all looking for more ways that they can let people interact, so we’ll see. But right now, 360’s not allowing us to do that kind of thing.

Are you hoping to get Steam on the 360 at some point?

I think Microsoft first thought that the PS3 was getting the Steam store, but when they realised it was just getting features that we use internally to make our games, I think they got a lot less worried. So with the second DLC, we’re talking to them a lot about features that we want and things we want to work with them on and they’re really open about working with us on that, so we’ll see.

I don't think there was any major fallout, so much as Microsoft not playing nice with Valve's DLC policy, and that standing in the way of how they like to update their games. Microsoft has still gotten every Valve console game since Half-Life 2 on the Xbox. Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Orange Box, Portal 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have all seen Xbox 360 releases. It would be pretty unusual for them to skip on the next generation system now.

Doubt it, doubly so if Half-Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 have no 360/PS3 build.

I recognize Ted Carson from the HL3/L4D3 list, it was his e-mail somebody snapped that let the cat out of bag on Source 2/L4D3

Thing is, as far as I know he's been at Rockstar Games since 2001, the technical director for RDR. He must've moved there pretty recently unless it's totally a coincidence.

Yeah, I was mostly kidding for the Wii U. And I agree it's very likely they will skip PS360iiU.

I also asked Newell what sort of software they're working on these days. He wouldn't give specifics, but he did reiterate that they're working on their next-generation engine—which he said will work with next-generation consoles as well.

"Hopefully that's gonna give us some interesting opportunities on the game side," he said.

The fact he said it's nextgen-consoles compatible and that it will give them opportunities they didn't have before (with Source 1) suggests they are building with nextgen HW in mind.

I did not pay much attention to Valve and MS back then so it could have been that when the news hit . i misinterpreted it as them having a falling out or i heard it from somebody who gave its own spin to it on another forum .

As a side note they weren't joking for Dota 2. It has like straight up 30+ groups.

The biggest one I saw was 43 people though, so I assume it still caps out at 60-70 like it was before.

Not a chance.

AdmiralPain seems to really be under the impression that if and when HL3 comes out, Valve would totally shut off their console revenue sources and go exclusively with SourceOS/Steam, despite several members telling him "uh, no, that's stupid" in very elaborate ways.

Great to see the most important people there (Laidlaw for story, Beckman for design, Bailey for score and many others). Time to deliver new Half-Life, Valve. It probably won't be out soon, but it finally appears in the active stage of development. L4D3 is pretty cool too and I'll look forward to it, of course, but it's not something of my prime interest (as well as their Steam expansion initiative).

Damn, that trademark stuff this week (Valve/Half-Life and Sony/Psygnosis) is actually pretty exciting if you think about it.

When the time comes, I will play it on PC and/or PS4. Can't wait for it.

Which one : the releasing on PS360 part or releasing on PS4ONE part ?

Both.

True, that is precisely what I believe. In time we'll see if I'm right, until then I am not going to change my mind.

Edit: To be honest I don't even understand why people still think of Valve as a third party developer. It stopped being that the moment it announced a new OS and a new home console.

Neat. I don't remember the context, but Clint Hocking recently tweeted something along the lines of, "I like to develop the types of games I enjoy playing, systemically-complex, player-driven experiences." Him being on L4D3 combined with the fact Valve has done a load of work this past year to make L4D2 the definitive take on that theme seems to indicate they're doing something different with the third game, perhaps a less-impenetrable (as compared to DayZ) open world zombie game.

I hope Half Life 3 isn't released for last gen machines. Just wait for PS4/One to build up a base and blow us away again with the new Source. I like seeing Valve doing so many things. It's felt like they dropped off the planet the last few years.

TF2
Portal 1 and 2
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
Counterstrike: Go
Dota 2

They've been just as busy as ever...but I am very excited for what's coming.

And yeah, with this kind of talent on L4D3 I'd love to see them try a real story-based campaign. The normal zombie rush co-op campaign with more streamlined levels and the standard competitive multi should be part of a bigger package.

By last few I meant last 2 and yes I know Dota 2 has been their thing recently. Portal 1 and 2, and L4D1 and 2 were at least 3 years ago.

No way, man. I think viewing SteamOS in the same vein as Microsoft and Sony's consoles, as in competition, is really missing the point of what their OS is about, especially in these early days. L4D3 and HL3 will end up on next generation consoles, I'd bet on it.
