Minerva's Den Added to Steam. GFWL/Securom removed from Bioshock 2

Did they convert the multiplayer to steamworks?

I'm crossing my fingers for dedicated servers, but Steamworks supports P2P networking as well.

They have been working on the multiplayer updates for months, that depot was getting updated and tested far more often than any other.

Then Valve's all like:

For the record, GFWL is still in the installation path of the registry app.

So it might still install GFWL, but the patch overrides the system. I just don't have enough info right now.

Literally worst time for this to happen, I have a test today! Luckily I'm pretty well versed on the material.

I just did a fresh install and it didn't set up any GFWL files. I can also confirm that while running the Bioshock 2, no instance of GFWL is started.

Activated, but not yet in my library. Sweet though, I'm sure it'll be there by the weekend.

Restart Steam.

Yay, works for me.

I bought Minerva's Den on GFWL - the only thing I've ever bought on that horrible platform. But it was definitely worth it despite that, good quality DLC. Nice to know it'll be less of a fuss to play next time.

So in short:

- Removed GFWL
- Removed Securom
- Added Steam Achievements
- Added full controller support
- Added Minerva's Den DLC previously only on GFWL for free to owners and to buy on Steam

Damn. I don't particularly care about the DLC at this point myself, but doing all this for free and helping GFWL die and moving Steam forward..

My hat off to 2K, good job.

After the amount of time and effort gamers put into begging companies not to use GFWL I feel like every publisher owes us for not listening. Dammit I want GFWL removed from every game I own that is using it.

Hopefully GTA 4 being a 2k game means that this garbage software will also be removed from that game as well.

You got it.

I sucked six dicks to get this tag.
Hooooly Crap. The Bioshock 1+2 key that I got from a fellow gafer that didn't work before on any service, now works. Only thing is that it only gave me Bioshock 2 instead of both 1 but that doesn't matter since I already own B1 on ps3. Looking forward to the controller support :)

And it says I own Minerva's Den Kreygasm.

Great news about controller support. While it's absurd it wasn't there from day 1, at least they finally fixed that flaw! and it's not often developers come back to several year old games to fix things like this.

And the way 2k is handling Minvera's Den is great. It's one of the most overrated pieces of videogame content in recent memory, but it's still very good and its awesome that it is now freely available to all.

Neat, my GFWL purchased Minerva's Den seems to have Migrated to Steam. Or maybe everyone who had Bioshock 2 before the Steamworks conversion got it for free?

Why? It poos on BS1 from great height.

becuz da soulzzz(tm) is gone cuz no levine didnt you hear?!?!?!!?!1

You know, despite 2K Marin (the people who developed BS2) being founded entirely on top talent who left Irrational Games after BioShock ended development so they could do their own thing...

There were many absurd things about the Bioshock 2 port.

Yes

could be a typo? It was for me on my first try.
Unfortunately not. My key is relatively easy without any O0s that could be mixed up and I checked that I didn't make any mistakes.
Maybe they haven't enabled all on Steam yet. I'll try tomorrow.
edit: I added the hyphens to the key and Steam accepted it. Yay :)

Let's hope Bioware is listening and learning from this. I need my 1080p/60 FPS Mass Effect games to have controller support.

So no one has done real reporting to confirm:

-Steam achievements live
-protector's DLC definitely in confirmed in menu

??

I see the protector's DLC in the menu, and I was in a steamworks game lobby.

The one dude left though and I couldn't actually play, but I'm assuming it works if you get 4 people together.

Even if the Mass Effect games used GFWL EA wouldn't do shit to improve the Steam version of any game. They would make something like this Origin exclusive.

Since 2K showed it was possible to go all out with this, I'd love to see Super Street Fighter get rid of GFWL and go full Steam support, but Capcom's become an example of a shitty company while 2K is an example of a great company.

Capcom doesn't support old products even though they expect everything to make money.

Wish this was standalone. Would love to play again on PC, but have no reason to pick up Bioshock 2 again.

Everyone should play Minerva's Den, still my favorite Bioshock.

Street Fighter is getting rid of GFWL, but you will have to purchase the Ultra upgrade to do so.

Just wait for it all to be bundled for a Fiver, or something.

Awesome I was willing to give them 5 for the dlc, can't believe they gave it away for free. 2K is basically my favorite third party publisher this gen.

iirc they were GFW not GFWL, ME2 used it's own online service.

GFW is basically not even a thing. It was a checklist developers had to run their game through to be able to use Microsoft branding at retail. It meant a game had to support controllers, widescreen modes, etc.

Of course, many games were released that didn't meet the requirements but still got to use the branding.

If you buy Minerva's Den in the US you pay the same price on PC and 360.
If you buy Minerva's Den in the UK and Europe you pay more on PC.

I don't see why that should get a pass.

Not saying it should get a pass, but your beef is with 2k there. Besides, it is probably the weakest cudgel to use in an argument against regional price differences.

They have to punish the unfaithful who didn't already own Bioshock 2 despite it being givien away on Neogaf a shit load of times due to excess keys.
