Is The Wonderful 101 the most voluminous and varied action game ever? I said WOW!

Finished 009-B tonight. I don't think a game has ever literally made my jaw drop before. Will finish the game tomorrow for sure.

Finally resumed playing since starting this thread, beating 5-B, 5-C and 6-A.

HOLY SMOKES AT THE 5-C BOSS. Someone please tell me I get to do that style of boss battle again later on, because it seriously did
Punch-Out!!
better than
Punch-Out!!
itself. I'd love to see Platinum tackle that series after seeing how they handled it here. No offense, Next Level Games!

And the block-rolling bit in 6-A was genius. I found myself looking between the TV and GamePad in equal measure. I'm surprised at the many clever uses they find for asymmetric gameplay in this game. The sheer variety is impressive. Another one of my favorite asymmetric moments was the bit in the water world, I believe, where as Wonder White I had to scale color-coded fences on the GamePad and stay off the ones about to be zapped by the ship visible outside on the TV. So good!

But seriously, that 5-C boss... Wow. I thought it was over after the statue was saved... But nope! It was only beginning!

Yes.

Keep on, Neiteio. Brace for impact, and enjoy the rest of the game, because like many said, it only gets better and better.

lol, you haven't seen anything yet! ANYTHING!

I share your enthusiasm and hype, and the game obliterated all of my already ridiculously high hype by being even more awesome than my mind could comprehend.

Disagreeing with you there.
While playing as Wonder Red Emeritus could take some getting used too, I loved the shmup section that follows after, and the little reference they made to Darius there. Best of all, Unite Morph abilities are still very much in use here.

based off the demo, and i enjoyed it, this sounds like the game platinum should be known for. im putting this on my must play list. its a shame the marketing was found wanting. i finished pikmin 3 so im not sure if i should wait for sonic lw or wait for this to price drop

I WILL!

btw, I'm really loving it, despite the fact that I don't know exactly why and how to describe the feeling I've got playing it.
It's simply that everything seems at the right place at the right moment and so on...

I disagree with you on that. I think it's very well-designed, extremely competent, challenging to player skill-levels, and has more good points than terrible by far.

FIST -- Quick circle on the right stick.

SWORD -- Quick tap in any direction.

GUN -- Quick tap up, then right.

WHIP -- Wiggle the stick up.

HAMMER -- Quick tap up, then a circle.

CLAWS -- Tap right. Then left. Then right.

BOMB -- Quick circle, then tap up.

this doesnt sound fun, varied yes.

I've unlocked just three of those and...they are fun. not to "play", but also to "trace" (I prefer the touch screen, but I was forced to play partially Offtv)
also summoning up allies with the circle is satifying (or call for the "plane")

I'm still on Sequence 1, but it truly is one of the most charming and surreal games I've ever played. How did this not score more in reviews? How did this game not sell? More importantly, how did Nintendo not market it at all?

It has the potential to be a system seller. I'm so mad and happy right now.

A friend teased me about a secret of this game so I have to ask ....

How is
Bayonetta
on this ?
I mean .. what are
her
powers ?

That is actually a very rewarding control scheme. As a someone who is anticipating Ryse, are you more into QTE?

haha, wow, you got me, i own all systems; handheld and console, guilty of looking forward to some games. and at 32, yes, learning voluminous combos is not something i'm as keen on,

actually im really looking forward to playing Beyond today, i think your pot shot wouldve worked better with that and not Ryse ;)

i will still get this game, but i didnt jump on it during the Target sale, and now im on the sidelines, looking for more insight

I agree. Hadoukens and Shoryukens also doesn't sound fun.

Who the hell finds fun on the control scheme alone

edit: Ok, good that you are looking forward to this game. Remember that it has an easy mode if you are having problems with controls.

easy,

again, another series i lost interest in, i was playing alpha 3, in 2000, use to practice the shit out of this move
Akuma_%28SFA3%29_%28SGS%29.jpg

a control scheme in and of itself can be fun, take old style resident evil games, the controls arent "good", but learning the nuances was often very rewarding and fun.

so i do get that.

"Voluminous combos?" The control scheme is extremely simple and all of those inputs, not combos, can be performed in a second. The complexity of the game comes from how you use those inputs, possibly doubling and tripling them up within a combo, against enemies that have distinct attack patterns you must watch out for in order to dodge/block/parry. The control scheme itself is simple and just takes a little practice. And like marc o says below me, they're all introduced to you over the course of like 7 hours. You're not just thrown in the deep end right away.

I think you're right it is more demanding than what we have become used to. It's not harder to control than your typical FPS, but it's brand new so you have to learn from scratch. On the other hand, the game doesn't throw all these moves at you when you start, the learning curve is progressive, and I insist on that, very rewarding.

I knew I loved the game the minute I saw it, if that doesn't do it for you, you may be better looking at something else. If you are an arcade fan though, I can't recommend this game enough.

this reminds me of viewtiful joe, where by the end, youre an expert, but in the beginning were trash,

so this sounds cooler than, here, learn all these "inputs" because the touchpad stuff is jank.

sounds like the learning curve is more in line with other platinum games, and less hadoukeny

my avatar is a play on god hand, that's another game, where in the beginning i was trash, but once it clicked i loved it, and didnt find it memorizey, or complex

Yes, the learning curve is very much "garbage --> master" as you unlock more Unite powers, skills, and abilities. It's a big game with a lot of options in combat, but they are given to you pretty gradually. If you've played character action games before, this really isn't so different.

And btw, you can use the right stick to do them, which most people find much faster. There's no jank to worry about when you start thinking about the "drawings" as inputs rather than drawings. The hammer is actually the only one that needs any finesse.

People saying you have to do inputs are doing this game a disservice.

You're drawing pictures. Not doing static SF motions. If you're just doing the same "motions" all the time you're not playing the game to the full extent of its design, where you sometimes have to draw shapes in different directions towards enemies to hit them with the forming of the morph to keep up a juggle, or away from enemies whom you can't draw through.

Neiteio's post is a good guideline for the composition of shapes, but it's not the be all end all of the mechanic. Game isn't that boring trust me.

The pad stuff works pretty well too. Better than the stick in some areas. But you probably aren't going to be holding it like a normal controller if you want to use it effectively in combat

If the sales are any indication, it's like people hate varied, fun, exciting gameplay and just want to shoot dudes in the head over and over and over and over and over...

OK, I'm done.

But I agree with you 100% OP. It's a shame more people aren't playing.

Maybe some people just don't get what the game is all about?

I certainly didn't, by playing the demo, unfortunately. :(

Wanted to like, but I just don't get it, somehow.

I'm with you Neiteio. This game is the reason why I bought a Wii U back at launch, and I am enjoying the hell out of it. There's so much here to love and it really rewards you for learning its systems.

My son and I dove into Multiplayer before even touching the single player stuff and figured out all the morphs just messing around, and by the end, in hard mode, we were having one of the best multiplayer experiences to date.

Basically is about the same shit as DMC and Bayonetta but the punching and slicing and cutting is done differently. And it's about protecting the earth.

And about a million different QTE/on-rails minigames to disrupt the fun :)

Disagree. They're part of what makes the game fun. The sections are only ever not fun when you don't realize all you can do (which is mostly what happens in the later parts of the game only because you have so many options to choose from).

This and RE4 are in a very small group together as most dynamic, varied action games. And just like Resident Evil 4 you want to come back to it even after you complete it for more!

It's the direct successor to Bayonetta on this front but this time the mini-games are well done and the QTE don't try to trick you into losing a life.

Well none of them were as fun as the core gameplay so they always distract me from what I would prefer to do.

And yes the Bayonetta influences are strong in 101 in the shitty minigame area :)

You're not at the end, so you really have no idea. No idea.

But yeah, in terms of content, production, and sense of journey as well as scale, The Wonderful 101 is easily one of the most comprehensive and "complete" games I've played probably since Resident Evil 4. It's easily one of the most diverse and ambitious projects in the character action game genre, and certainly Platinum's biggest undertaking.

Fuck it. Even though I'm sitting here playing Wind Waker and I just got a Vita (and the instant backlog that is PS+) last week, you just talked me into running out and buying this after work.

You are a terrible person.

I'm still feeling high off of the end game. I know it probably sounds like a markish thing to say, but it really was worth the price of admission alone. Best way I can describe it is that it's everything you could hope for, everything you didn't know you wanted, and everything it could have possibly been. It's quite perfect, and really encompasses what makes gaming the special medium it is, though in a different way than other special titles. It's possible that they have ruined action games for me the same way Super Metroid ruined 2D exploration in that I can play others and enjoy them, but it just won't be the same due to how perfect this has come together and achieved it's own potential.

What a bunch of evil genius bastards you all are, Platinum.

OP here. I'm the guy whose control scheme you quoted. :)

First of all, I'm also picking up Beyond today. Probably won't get around to it for a while, but I love David Cage! So I share your excitement there. :)

Second of all, the inputs for Unite Morphs in TW101 are NOT complicated. Trust me. I made a point of saying I'm NOT good at fighting games -- I can hardly pull off a hadoken in Street Fighter -- and yet I'm cranking out Unite Morphs left and right in TW101.

My comparison was meant to illustrate how you don't need to fuss much over the actual shape, because you can reliably lean on the same quick motions, simply adjusting them for angle relative to which direction you're facing. This means a quick tap or two of the stick usually suffices for forming the shape. And then you hit A to activate, or X if you want your teammates to use it (they quickly unleash an attack using that shape -- you can have up to five such attacks going at once, parallel to your own attacks!).

And the best part is the process of making Unite Morphs is FUN. Reason being, time slows down, and your men line up single-file as the shape forms, and they destroy destructible objects and gather up collectibles as they zigzag through them, and the broader you make the lines, the more immense and powerful the Unite Morph will become, so you can really go all-out making the biggest straight line for a three-story-tall sword, or go all-out making the biggest right angle for a hulking bazooka instead of the usual gun.

It's extremely empowering, and the act of quickly shaping these morphs with the right stick or touch screen -- or leisurely creating the biggest, baddest weapon around -- has a delightful "crunchy" feel, thanks to the sound and animation. It feels like you're an actual superhero, a Power Ranger making the hand gestures, drawing energy out of thin air and massaging it into a crackling weapon of mass destruction. Pure energy!

Emphasizing this. I've never played a game where the mere act of swapping weapons is so much fun. DmC made a big deal of giving you access to all your weapons at once, but ended up making the swapping clunky by putting it on the D-pad. I can't imagine a better weapon swap system for this game than the drawing, and I really don't want to. It's wonderful.
