The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

Oh yeah. One more thing I was wondering about: is there any decent way to deal with the
Unite Bomb-esque effects that prevent any attacks inside them that some enemies can use? The best thing I could figure was to move back and use range, but since they last for a good chunk of time I wasn't sure. Felt a little inefficient whenever I did it.

And how's the multiplayer mode? I haven't gotten a chance to try it, but since I'm one of those types who actually draws on the pad for the most part, I'm having trouble imagining exactly how that controls.

There's two main enemies that do this, right? The first you're supposed to just burn down as quickly as possible. For the other, you have to remember that Climb Attacks exist.

finally started this last night, fun, Finally mastered multiple attacks, atleast with swords out.

one thing though, when do you get the gun/green guy? i just beat umm the scorpion thing but did not get the tail to drop. finally realized what the wonderfood was for (played the demo over and over and never used the food)

so far have bought the first two defensive things the jello mold and spring.

only played for ~hr.

During the next stage.

About getting enemy weapons (like the scorpion tail) to drop, pay attention to the color of the circle when enemies spawn. Defeat them with the corresponding weapon and something cool might happen....

Thanks.

Also, is the Gamepad or Pro controller better for this?

There are certain parts that require both screens. The menu to swap out your leader character is also on the bottom screen. You can use picture in picture on your TV for the second screen but it isn't as good that way. So yeah, Gamepad all the way in my opinion. Still use the right stick to draw versus the screen though.

Just finished Operation 006-B and just when I think the game can't change it up any more it does it again. For me this game is up there with the best.

Oh yeah, I love that I only realized to try pronouncing the enemy names and thinking on it around halfway through. So many punny Japanese names I missed!

Also, I was thinking last night on how many little references to Nintendo/Clover/Platinum stuff found their way into the game, kind of like Bayonetta with the Sega/Clover stuff.

Off the top of my head, there's:
-All the stuff named Platinum of course, plus all the cherry blossoms and Clover Elementary.
I think a couple of the skills at least. Witch time and Hero time for sure, of course.
Circling the flower beds, and in a related manner the whole Wonder Liner is kind of an evolution of the Celestial Brush now that I think about it.
I've heard that at least Bayonetta is unlockable, but that's kind of straightforward.
Turning into a little dog or whatever in the solo fight as Blue made me think of Okami, at least, though I didn't get a great look at that one.
Then there's the obvious Punch-out references.
And the boss fight against a brain followed by escaping an exploding planet through tunnels made me think of Star Fox.

I'm sure there's others I'm missing, so anyone got anything else?

The ones I've noticed-

-When P-Star first mentions the entrances to Kahkoo-regah, he quotes the famous Legend of Zelda line- "It's a secret to everybody."
-Blue is a walking meme-o-dex- "Cool story, bro." "Mind. Blown." etc
-Wonder Red's stock combo closely resembles that of Joe's from Viewtiful Joe.
-Numerous vehicle designs are based on those from Bayonetta.
-Green's gun, Christine Daaé, is named after a character from the classic novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra.
-Christine Daaé's upgraded form closely resembles the Super Famicom light gun peripheral, the Super Scope.
-Luka Alan Smithee wears the same scarf as his Bayonetta namesake. Alan Smithee is the pseudonym used by movie directors to dissasociate themselves from their work.
-Wonder Gamer's helmet is of course a Nintendo Famicom.
-Vorkken's line which begins with "Join me, and together we will rule the galaxy as-" is lifted verbatim from The Empire Strikes Back.
-Blue slices a falling Neo Mu pipe in two while the camera and music replicates Raiden's iconic Ray finisher from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
-The 'Lost City of Lowrule' is almost certainly a pun on 'Hyrule' from the Legend of Zelda games.
-Wonder Pink's whip is fashioned from 'Belmont Alloy', a direct reference to the Castlevania games of which Kamiya is particularly fond.
-Operation 005C's boss is a loving recreation of the boxing game, Punch-Out!!
-Blue's line: "Better run home to mama now," is also one of Sarah Bryant's winquotes from Virtua Fighter 2.
-When Will's father pilots the plane toward the Geathjerk mothership in the 006-B flashback, the shape and angle of the ships closely resembles the Gradius cover art, another one of Kamiya's favourite games.
-OO6-B's shmup stage bears a striking resemblance to the 1992 Sammy arcade game, Viewpoint.
-Gimme's line: "It's come to this, you crying baby cockroaches!" refers to the eponymous Bayonetta's hypothetical worst fear.
-"Platinum Robo, Get Ready!" references the classic greeting from Sega's Space Harrier, and heralds W101's loving recreation of the same game. The Space Harrier section contains variants on the original bosses Squilla and Ida, and also repeats the original line "You're doin' great!" via Blue. It also strongly mirrors elements of Sega's Galaxy Force II.
-Blue's line: "Never tell me the odds!" is another line from The Empire Strikes Back.
-Blue's line: "Let's rock, baby!" was first made famous by Devil May Cry's Dante.
-"PLATINUM HEADBUTT TO THE MOON!" is paraphrased from Bayonetta.
-In another Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance gag, Vorkken's Meizerr smashes through an Envan during the escape from Jergingha, holding the Envan's power cell in its jaws, which it promptly crushes.
-The newspaper credits bears the slogan 'Redgrave Foundation Established', the Redgrave name being a Kamiya running gag beginning with the prototype RE4 which became Devil May Cry (the protagonist's name was Tony Redgrave), through to Bayonetta, belonging to Luka and Antonio Redgrave.

I'm sure there are many more I've missed or forgotten. What an amazing game.

As I mentioned at the time of my post, I've probably missed a lot of VJ refrences, since I'm sadly not very familiar with it (c'mon, Wii U eShop release).

I'm still feeling high off of the end game. I know it probably sounds like a markish thing to say, but it really was worth the price of admission alone. Best way I can describe it is that it's everything you could hope for, everything you didn't know you wanted, and everything it could have possibly been. It's quite perfect, and really encompasses what makes gaming the special medium it is, though in a different way than other special titles. It's possible that they have ruined action games for me the same way Super Metroid ruined 2D exploration in that I can play others and enjoy them, but it just won't be the same due to how perfect this has come together and achieved it's own potential.

What a bunch of evil genius bastards you all are, Platinum.

This should be on the packaging.

Hear hear. Platinum has also ruined other action games (or other console games in general) for me, save for a few exceptions

I wish they didn't change randomly.

It'd be pretty cool to be able to plan PP runs around them. Knowing which weapon will trigger enemy drops in which act every time. I think that would be pretty neat for speed running.

It's not though. :(

Still an improvement over Angel Arms, which IIRC were just random drops.

Ah, it was you who did the massive reference post.

I've been considering replaying VJoe just to add to the list...

How many different weapons are there to get? I'm trying to get the bottlecap but I'm not sure which ones I'm missing. I got the cannon from the spiked tank, the worm tail, the crab claws, the teikuu cannon, and the 10 weapons from that one Kahkoo Regah but I'm still missing it.

Any tips for getting a platinum on 1-C? (normal)

Combo is easy, and damage I just need to practice, but I can't manage to get more than a bronze on time, there has to be something I'm missing to speed it up.

okay, how do you break the ice blocks at the beginning of 006-A? Am I missing something?

Use the torches to light the fist on fire.

Heads up, the TRU sale for 3DS/Wii U games is currently going on. It's buy one, get one 40% off.

So if you're planning to get Pokemon or Wind Waker, maybe also consider Wonderful 101, too.

Mash the fire buttons in the shooting segment at the beginning instead of just holding them down. You will fire at a faster rate and do more damage. That part is key.

Ohh thanks!
This did it for me, managed to get a gold on time for an overall platinum rank :D

The two parts that eat up the most time on 1-C are the shooting section and the Laambo section if you aren't killing him fast enough

Once you trim those parts down it's easy. Only easier boss is probably 4-C

PAULINK

I microwave steaks.
I want to meet the person who decided it was a fucking good idea to make the controller rumble so much and so INTENSE FOR EVERYTHING. I love my force feedback in my games, but this has been the first time where it's absolutely stupid, had to turn it off.

Besides that, glad I picked this game back up. I really need to finish it.

If you killed an enemy using a Torture Attack, they would always drop their weapon. They could also drop it randomly, iirc.

The more you know!

Also I love this game! Just beat 5-C (going slow because of school), but I'm absolutely in love with the drawing mechanic. It makes every part of the combat so damn satisfying.

Also, when fighting Grace & Glory, the first one you kill will always drop their weapon, the other one won't, even with Torture Attacks.

Ah Grace & Glory. That first encounter will live long in the mind. Going from 'well this isn't that bad' to suddenly 'wait? 2 of them?' Was a pleasant and painful surprise.

Which brings me neatly to Operation 007-A
with a pretty much like for like situation when you first fight the Gerry-Doora, the ones will Drills for arms. The first 2 types of Doora (play on words of Durga perhaps?) had me on edge expecting something but it was only when facing the drill wielding bastards that I got duped again. Not content with having another show up to an already chaotic fight but just as you got 1 down to almost zero health the split and are back at full health. Yet again Beautiful and bruising at the same time.

Though like all encounters in a Kamiya/Clover/Platinum title, once you figure out the right tactics and weapon against them each enemy becomes like a ball of yarn to the over eager cat that is the player. Just so much fun to be had chasing after them. Which is another great thing I'm loving about W101 is that you have your full arsenal at your beck and call with just a prod of the screen or flick of the stick. The combos you can pull off in this are mind boggling.

Just finished up Operation 007-B last night and I already am looking forward to going through the game again with all the tricks and tips I've picked up along the way.

Well that explains it. I haven't used a torture attack in forever.

Never noticed about G&G though.

That's damn near the only way I get PP on those G&G sections, at least consistently. Milk out some combos, torture attack at the last sliver of health, damn near invincible/powerful GG angel arm spin kill the other guy, PP.

You want some crazy Kamiya attention to detail?

When you finish 9-B you don't get a voice quip from Nelson when you get your trophy on the result screen. Why? The communications with the Virgin Victory are cut off.

Amazing.

Been playing this game and just reached
the first fight with that evil prince dude who can unite morph.
I know I'm just strting but the game is pretty crazy. Gonna take me a while to get a hold on the controls.

Silly question, but how do we drop held weapons?

Okay, I'm in the ice level, and twice now Ive seen outlines on the ground that if I am drawing a line, the outline on the ground starts to shimmer a little. Are these anything? Right now I'm looking at some kind of trapezoid on the ground and it is doing that whenever i start to draw. I tried to draw the pattern but I'm not sure if I'm not doing it well, or there is nothing to do.

I also noticed earlier one that looked like a square with no bottom line...

Edit: Literally every time I ask something on here, I figure it out on my own one second later...

There are ones you can draw on to get hidden items though

but I don't remember their locations

There's also shining ones that you can't draw on too I think. Which is...weird.

If you're posting this now, you probably also missed the swirly symbol in 5-A near where you find Wonder Black.

Yup, must have missed that. And I definitely missed the one that was a square without a bottom...

Are they all heart pieces? Or are they coins and figures and stuff as well?

There are 3 or 4 in the game total, and at least two of them gave me heart pieces. There's also something similar in Operation 7, I think.

I noticed something weird about Pure Platinum trophies, the ones you get in a regular Operation have this crazy shine on them but the boss level ones are flat and don't shine at all.

VS

zlCfzRJth_wJKvAGgK

Wonder why that is, kind of strange, it's the same for every boss level...

Might have something to do with the amount of medals you got during a mission but they all shine the same, it's either super shine or no shine at all.
