Inafune: I would be open to Capcom publishing Mighty No. 9

I don't understand why people wouldn't want to play this if it was Mega Man.... the thing is basically Mega Man in all but name anyway.

Platinum (and Clover) were behind bomb after bomb and were essentially all let go only to form a new company that had numerous bombs under Sega, and now seemingly another bomb under Nintendo, and Bayonetta 2 will likely sell bad as well. The only success story the company has sales wise is MGR and that still sold way less than the usual MGS title would, it sold merely to huge fans of MG or platinum.

Basically, I think platinum will inevitably fold or be in the same spot begging for kickstarter money, and I say this as someone who buys every game by Platinum and loves most of them (sans Madworld and Anarchy Reigns, but I still own them, even own Infinite Space). For some reason they just can't seem to knock out an original hit and it's probably largely due to the fact they can't reliably reach a large userbase and publishers have no faith in them to produce a wide selling game (so Nintendo using them makes sense as a portfolio booster, but even that won't last if the games bomb as hard as 101 seems to be doing)

Yet none of this refutes what I said.

Pft! Like anybody will read this post. They prefer their imaginary bitter asshole Kamiya over the real one.

If this is just a way to take the piss on Capcom, okay I get it, that would still make me salty, but I get it.

But if I even catch a fart in the wind that he's entering negotiations with Capcom after taking my money, I'm going to feel VERY betrayed.

Kickstarter is a place to make ideas become reality. Not take money from loyal customers then go make someone else pay for it and keep said money.

This sounds REALLY shady, and I'm definitely keeping my eyes on this. I'm COMPLETELY not cool with Kickstarter being used as a way to fund corporate games.

Mmm, there's no way part of the terms wouldn't be "use the KS money first", to be honest. As far as them pocketing the money...they're technically doing that anyway, lol. The money is pretty much a salary while they work on this game.

But in any case, unless he's a complete idiot (doubtful), we're talking about "terms" that would make all these crazy complaints fanboys are talking about impossible: they'd (Capcom) have to guarantee the game gets made, they'd have to uphold all the KS promises, and if he's really "a good business man" promote the game out of their own pocket, because that KS money wouldn't leave anything for promotion.

Man I would love if Capcom picked it up and turned it into Megaman. I'd be down for playing a new Megaman game.

You Capcom, in this case, would likely just be used for distribution and marketing right? They already have the funds needed to develop the game, they wouldn't need any significant outside funding (hell, they already got it via kickstarter). Inafune would be in a great position to "get what they want" if a deal came about.

Keep in mind this interview took place (I believe) on day 1 of the KS campaign. I wonder if he'd answer the same today, given the incredible reaction he got for M9? No one can say for sure, but the fan outpouring of support and love over the month of the KS really brought Beck (and Call) to life. I think it'd be super hard to just say "ah, well, they're offering tons of money and full creative control, let's just make it a MM game now"

Business-wise, nothing he said is strange at all; it's a pretty matter-of-fact statement, but of course when you pull it out and make it the focus of a thread here, yeah, it's going to sound like a bigger deal than it actually is. ;p

I wouldn't go near cacpcom for anything now. They have destroyed their own reputation. It's a real shame. We can only hope that someone like Ono gains a lot more influence in the company and returns the company's brand to something to be respected.

And then when it gets cancelled...

lol. Capcom makes a deal with Inafune he can't refuse... and cancels the game. An appropriate end.

then repositioned as a Spark Unlimited title.

the modernized remake to make him more appealing to today's audience

"Spark Unlimited creative director said Beck "looked like a fuckin' Saturday morning cartoon character" and was out of date with their vision for this highly-anticipated reboot"

What is the point of kickstarter then Inafune?

I've said a few times with Kickstarter: It's very important to distinguish the *traditional* publisher role - literally using the skills they have to get the game printed and distributed - from the *modern* publisher role - which also includes funding games and driving the direction of the industry.

While the modern publisher role is, I feel, stifling for the high-end industry at large, leading to the sentiment that only-AAA counts, the traditional publisher role is just a developer making use of a company's specific skills to further the goal of the game.

I'd be perfectly happy to see more publishers happy to take on the more traditional publishing role.

Could anyone imagine if Capcom published it only to cancel it?

Under the traditional publishing model, while they might be publishing, Capcom would not own the game. If Capcom declined to publish it, Inafune would be free to shop it around elsewhere, or self-publish.

Id have no trouble with Capcom being a distributor, but this is Inafune so obscure agreements and giving the middle finger to your backers is a possibility that I always acknowledged. He lead an incredibly great campaign and now its time to reap.

Folks don't want this to become Mega Man? Weird. I'd love for it to happen.

Would love it if it "became" Mega Man" but that isn't really the problem, Capcom is.

Now I do believe Inafune to be smarter than to let Capcom gobble it up. So lets leave it at that.

I wouldn't mind it either. It's practically a reboot of Mega Man done by the same people.

I still doubt it would happen, considering Capcom would really have to swallow their pride to allow it. On the upside, Beck could appear in future VS titles (even though I doubt we'll see one anytime soon)

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Bitter Kamiya, maybe the thing that fails you over and over again is exactly that, the lack of business man in your company.

He didnt say this as an attack on inafune, he was simply stated that inafune wasent really a designer but a businessman

But...half the people backed it to say F U Capcom. They would feel so betrayed!

Yeah, but those people are dumb anyway. He made it pretty clear during the campaign the project was not about that, that's just something bitter Megaman fans wanted to read into it.

It always annoys me when crowd funded games are picked up by a publisher after the campaign is over so I really hope this doesn't happen. I don't know about you guys but I back projects to help the developer, not just for the game at the end. Sneaky publisher deals are super-tacky.

In those cases it's almost always just a deal for physical distribution. People also tend to overestimate how far kickstarter money goes anyway.

He's really not admitting that he would want Capcom to publish this game with terms like those. Sure, he says that he would work with Capcom as a publisher and make it Mega Man... only if they give him Mega Man as a property. That would never ever happen.
Yeah, people need to read this answer carefully.

He'd make the game Mega Man if Comcept got to own Mega Man.

He's only trying to emphasize that there are no burned bridges between him and Capcom. He made it clear that this was not to be taken as some sort of revenge against Capcom early into the KS, so those that made it about that are on their own.

The KS was very successful, so I don't think Capcom has anything to offer here. It still needs to be said that business avenues are not dead completely.
This. Inafune already made this obvious early on in the Kickstarter and it is not like I'm expecting this to actually happen.

There's nothing original about Mighty No. 9 though... I mean, it's about a step up above a fan game in terms of "how obvious was the influence." Heck, at least someone making a fan game wouldn't pretend that their idea was original.

If they gave us an offer we couldn’t refuse, that would mean having to change the main character into Mega Man. On top of that, it would still have to be our IP, which is what we want. I can’t foresee that happening. We really want this to be our thing."

Adding to this the context from johntv's post, this makes it seem like Inafune was suggesting both an openness to working with Capcom in general (maybe on some MM title in the distant future) but a disinterest in them being involved with MN9 in any significant way. Or at all.

:lol.

"I wouldn't mind if they published it... as long as it's called Mighty No. 9 and we retain complete creative control."

Inafune, professional troll. Drive that dagger in deeper!
