I bought a copy and I don't even have a Vita.

Best RPG of all time deserves more. I hope Sega aggressively markets Persona 5 in the West.

Reading the second part of this sentence is just plain weird.

Were it not for this version, I (probably) never would have played this game.

Now it's one of my all-time favorites. Is there any chance of a P3 Golden of some sort? I want to say I saw rumors of that at some point. Persona 3 Platinum, I think?

I'll be surprised if there isn't some sort of push like that to promote the Persona 3 movie next month(?)

+1 to that once I get a vita.

Same here. I am eagerly awaiting the (assumed) release of the Vita TV in the US so I can finally pick this up. There's not really any other Vita game I care about unfortunately, but I'll definitely buy a $150 system to play an enhanced version of my favorite game from the PS2.

Japan only? Did it actually do over 100k(Retail only?) in the US as well as this?

Seems not too out of the question that it could have moved a half mill worldwide by this point then, couldn't it?

Damn impressive if so.

I'd prefer it if they didn't give the game a costly marketing campaign which in turn requires lofty expectations, especially if it fails to meet said expectations. You can wave Persona 6 in English goodbye at that point.

This kind of "it needs to be bigger at any cost" attitude is toxic. While I want to see Persona games being more successful than they are (as a fan, who wouldn't want this?), I don't think aggressively pushing it with marketing is going to do Persona 5 or future titles a good service.

Aggressive and/or smart marketing is what most games need and never get.

People don't seek out good things. They need to be told about them. I agree with you in so far as they shouldn't blow their load on marketing and bloat their budget to the point that expectations are ridiculous, but better marketing would be great. It always is. I can count the number of games that I think were effectively marketed on my hands. The industry is soooooo bad about that.

Dec '08, and even later in Europe.

The core had moved on from PS2. Persona 4 received crazy acclaim, it would have sold far better on PS360 in the West.

And if you make P5 PS3-only, late 2014, they're stupid, again.

Has any Atlus game crossed 1.3M? Or even 1M? Persona is still a pretty niche series. No where near a million seller.

Nice.

I hope P5 is PS3(4?) + vita with cross save. The Persona games seem made for that kind of play.

Dungeon crawling on the train was pretty good but if only I could play on the big screen when I got home.

So how do you popularize a JRPG in the States? I'm not talking about a billion dollar campaign that will drastically increase expenses.

My point is, the series isn't struggling in the West afaik. Atlus USA seems to be doing okay with a good portion of its localisations, Persona or otherwise, so why rock the boat with an aggressive marketing campaign that could tip the balance against a game being profitable?

I'd rather it if Atlus USA just carried on doing what Atlus USA does (unless it's made explicitly clear that their current trajectory is unsustainable), rather than trying to branch the game out to a larger audience with marketing and potentially failing, thus jeopardising future releases in the West.

I don't strongly disagree (effective/smart/aggressive marketing for Persona would be neat -- I just fear that it would be costly, and not in a good way), but Atlus USA has built up a loyal fanbase, and they have proven themselves effective at selling niche RPGs to that dedicated audience. From my position, I just don't want to see the boat being rocked too much, especially if money is spent in a way that isn't recouped. It could affect future games in ways that are undesireable, i.e. they may be "broadened" which would be horrible, or they could just not get localised at all, which would be a disaster. That fear is even bigger now they're part of the Sega-Sammy mothership, who have recent notoriety in regards to localisations.

I was two of those. Bought the special edition and a regular copy. Game is so good that once I finished my second playthrough, I gave away my regular copy to a fellow member of VitaGAF just to ensure more people play it.

Fair enough. Let's hope Sega is satisfied with these numbers.

Awesome, considering the vita install base. I bet it influenced a ton of people to buy the vita. I know i bought one with the sole purpose of playing P4G.

Same. Though, now I'm discovering lots of other great games. But it was definitely the system seller.

Ni No Kuni sold a million, just on PS3, and it's not nearly as good, and didn't have nearly the hype around it, and it's a new IP.

If P5 is current gen, next gen and Vita, it'll very easily sell over a million in the West.

What's kind of sad for the Vita is that this is also probably one of its highest selling games. I have no actual figures but I'm safely assuming it's in the top 10.

I started to like it, but haven't played it since like November. I think I just meet Rise. I'll get back to it eventually.

The original Persona is the top selling game in the series?

The original Playstation release was a pretty big seller in Japan, if I recall. I'll have to find my source again. The combined releases of Persona 3 and Persona 4 should have surpassed it tho.

I have high hopes for Persona 5. The series is stronger than ever in Japan. All it needs is a proper release on any current/next gen system.

Ninokuni sold 750K worldwide on PS3.
650K was for the japan-only DS game.

I think this is very good for an Atlus game. Even better since this is a port of a PS2 game. On Vita. P5 will definitely do better than these figures even if it were a Vita exclusive, just on the virtue that it's a new entry and not a port. Chances are it'll be on a system with a bigger install base, so I expect significant growth without the kind of marketing we were discussing! :p

Nanako
. It's good and i like the characters, but I'm not sure about GOAT. Does the story really suck you in from here?

Pretty sure this comes close to or equals the original P4 sales too (at least in Japan).

And that was with a much larger install base too (PS2 vs Vita).

I bet they keep this model rolling for a while. OG version on consoles, derp port on handhelds a little later on to catch dat double dip

Yea P5 is a sure thing, and SMTV could happen due to SMTIV's success, but the fate of the other spinoffs and new projects is up in the air.

I hope so, the PSP version has a number of improvements but doesn't have all the FES additions as well scaled back exploration.

But 300k for just Japan is great news, more reason for the Vita to do well there since it would be an excellent home for Japanese third-parties.

That's cool with me.
