Steam Versions Batman:AA/AC & Bioshock 2 Adding Achievements, Removing GFWL/Securom?

Reading this thread is like reading stereo instructions. What's the current news or status on GFWL for these three games:

1. Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTYE
2. Batman: Arkham City GOTYE
3. Bioshock 2

I'm about to buy these on PS3 cus it's taking so long to patch out GFWL.

No news. We know that a Steamworks version for all of them is *probably* in the pipeline, but there's been not a lot outside of the initial leak.

This is the worst fucking tease ever. It's taking forever and there hasn't even been any official announcements by 2K or Arkane. It may take as long as the final day GFWL ends before we can play these games.

Yeah I was hoping to replay the Batman games before Origins but I've decided I'm never installing GfwL on my computer again so I doubt that will happen. Oh well.

Gave up waiting and just played it. I'm actually surprised that Arkham City already has Steam Cloud integration as well as Steam Achievements, so it's not that bad.

Came in expecting to read the great news.. I should've know better considering the thread title still ends with a "?".

Arkham City has had Steam Achievements and cloud since day one.

Bioshock 2 and AA have Steam Achievements now, but they are not activated.

I will make a new thread when the patches drop.

I thought the recent update was just an updated dx redist or something like that, sounds odd that it would break your game.

Yes, exactly. Steam starts to launch the launcher then simply quits making no further attempt to load the game. This started happening right after the update that updated the redistributables.

You try verify cache? Reinstall GFWL? Reinstall the game if all that fails?

Nope, no word from MS.
The date that people float around comes from Age of Empires Online brief support page mention and then later the blog post detailing AoEO getting the axe on that date. There's no actual mention that GfWL will shut down in the blog post, just AoEO, so we are just connecting the dots. I think the support article might have mentioned GfWL.
But yeah, it's probably safe to assume that until MS announces it officially, we won't be hearing much more about these or any other games that may or may not get converted.

edit: Yes, the pulled support article specifically mentions GfWL. http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2013/08/GFW_is_Dead.jpg

We might be getting close to a Bioshock 2 update and Minerva's Den release.

Minerva's Den was updated with purchasing options last night and was added to multiple 2K packages.

2K promotional weekend on Steam right now, today is XCOM day. They will have a day dedicated to Bioshock, maybe that is the time to deploy the GFWL patch and Minerva's Den.

The Minerva's Den app being added to the promotional packs would imply that we we are getting that release.

Minerva's Den released on Steam!

This might be the big one guys, this just popped up on Registry

less than a minute ago Removed SupportsCDKeyCopyToClipboard – 1
less than a minute ago Removed ShowCDKeyOnLaunch – 1
less than a minute ago Removed LegacyKeyRegistryLocation – HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\TestApp8850\SteamKey
less than a minute ago Removed LegacyKeyRegistrationMethod – registry

Will make a new thread if confirmed.

It'd be nice if they removed everything else when they're Steamworks titles to begin with. You can't launch most Steam games without the client and can only run the client on one computer at a time, so I'm not sure what the point of additional DRM is on Steam.

Steam's DRM isn't particularly hard to circumvent, which leads to Ubi and friends adding extra DRM on top.

fake edit: I should start reading dates on posts.

Well ,this is a start, but the Batman games are the one I actually cared about. D:
And Dark Souls, but I've the feeling that is going to take a while.

Do I need to play BioShock 2 to enjoy Minerva's Den or should I just dive right in? Not really interested in playing 2 if it's not necessary.

Not at all, it's completely self-contained so you won't feel like you've missed out.

Although to be honest I'm enjoying the base game much more than BS1 so it's certainly worth a shot.

Couldn't agree more... impatiently waiting for them to patch out gfwl and securom. I am hoping they will do a weekend sale in preparation for Origins coming out soon... let's cross our fingers and hope. According to Grief they have been in a holding position for the past several weeks on the patches.

I will cry if I can't chase down a retail copy of Arkham Asylum and use the key to register the vanilla version -- not the GOTY re-release -- to my account. As I said in another thread, though, if WB wants to throw existing owners of the original releases of Asylum and City a bone and include the GOTY content, then just have their respective keys activate both flavours.

Your situation and desires are slightly different then what the average consumer needs.

That's leaning a bit on the side of an obsessive-compulsive fixation, isn't it?

They could just put the DLCs for sale on the store. I cannot wait for this update, I have vanilla AC and bought a bunch of DLC that I never got to try because GFWL refused to download it...

That's just stating the obvious, but it's not as though doing so would cost WB anything -- you can't even purchase the vanilla versions any more.

Edit: Err, what does the average consumer need in this case?

What would you say if I told you I imported four copies of Football Manager (2009 -> 2012) earlier in the year just to register the keys on Steam? ;)

JaseC

The GOTY version.

It could be possible that they purchased the DLC through GFWL, average consumer is going to want to see compensation.

And they could still get the GOTY version if WB followed through with what I mentioned in the latter half of my post, so what was your point?

If someone had purchased a retail or digital version of vanilla AA in the past, and then activated that on Steam they would want to get the GOTY version.

So with your initial post you were just stating the obvious for the sake of stating the obvious, then? That's odd.

I really have no idea what is going on in this conversation.

You responded to my post by mentioning that my desire is different to what a consumer needs, and while that's true, the two can be aligned, so I'm confused as to why you felt the need to respond at all; because it seems, then, you were just stating something for the sake of stating something, like somebody deciding on a whim to look up at the sky and say, "The sky is blue." :p

Nope, just saying that what you desire is not necessarily aligned with the normal consumer, while casting doubt on vanilla versions activating as vanilla versions.

I didn't think I needed to go further. The average consumer is going to want to activate their vanilla copy, or have their Steam copy carry over to the GOTY version due to the potential purchase of the DLC from the GFWL store.

Your desires conflict completely with that. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just saying that the vast majority of people won't share that viewpoint.

Yes, I understand that, but...

...no, it doesn't, because like I said, WB can have Asylum (and City, for good measure) keys activate both flavours of the game. You might be inclined to think, "But there's no real point in having this be the case because the vanilla version is rendered redundant for Joe Average by the GOTY version", and you'd be right, but that's beside the point -- I'd like to get my hands on a Steam copy of the original version of Asylum and contrary to what you seem to believe I've mentioned an approach that would allow for this in addition to giving "the normal consumer" what they want.

While that is a possibility, I doubt that it will happen. I think there is a reason why we haven't seen the registry apps for the vanilla versions of both AC and AA touched.
The update of Bioshock 2 made me see the reason for this.
