I can't stand *any* of the vehicle stuff in this game. When they don't just feel completely mindless, they're tanking my rating with ridiculous difficulty spikes.

In the sum of all its parts, The Wonderful 101 is one of the most unique action games I’ve played on any system in recent years. The over-the-top Saturday morning cartoon feel, coupled with a deep battle system is something you cannot ignore if you are a Wii U owner or not. If you’ve been holding out on buying a Wii U, buy it for this game; The Wonderful 101 deserves to be in your collection, and it deserves to be played.

I noticed something weird about Pure Platinum trophies, the ones you get in a regular Operation have this crazy shine on them but the boss level ones are flat and don't shine at all.

Wonder why that is, kind of strange, it's the same for every boss level...

Might have something to do with the amount of medals you got during a mission but they all shine the same, it's either super shine or no shine at all.

That might be a bug. Some of my S-ranks in MGR:R would not glow for some reason. The last patch that was released fixed the problem.

Woo! After trying for hours to platinum 008c, I gave up frustrated. Coming back a little while later, I decided to use the Epilogue Kakhoo Regah as practice. Did it in one go, and then proceeded to no damage the mission version in one go too for a Platinum trophy and the
Punch-Out bottle-cap.
Feels good!

Woo finally finished it, played through on normal. Have to say my favourite part was
when you do the quick time event to stomp the bug. Just so funny for some reason.

I don't understand complaints about the controls though. I had a friend who played through it before I did, and he would complain about the poor drawing recognition and all that. Is the drawing on the tablet harder or something? I played through the entire game just using the analogue stick instead, and never had any problems, and it's not like I'm not particularly good at these kinds of games.

The only thing I didn't like were those fights where
you have to box or whatever.
I just could never get good at it and didn't understand what I was doing wrong.

It's all about you knowing HOW to do it. If you managed to find a way to input the commands with little room for error (for example by doing the often recommended "gestures, not shapes" method) and your buddy didn't then that should explain the discrepancies.

Personally, I'm not a fan of them but some of the criticism is just hyperbole.

I used to draw shapes on the touch screen during the demo but switched to the analog stick for the game, and I must admit it's much easier and quicker using the analog.

Should have my Wii U today, was thinking of trying out the demo for this. Although I read in here that some say to avoid it as it may give the wrong impression. Thoughts?

It doesn't give the wrong impression, but it makes no careful effort to teach you how to play. It might seem very confusing and intimidating, and though it obviously doesn't cover the scope or depth of the game, it does give a very reliable sample of the core formula. Try it, and hit folk up here for some tips if you find it all a bit daunting.

Basically the demo isn't there to sell you the game, it serves as a training before getting it.

At least that's how I used it.

Ok good, I will give it a shot and keep that in mind. I plan to buy it for sure, just don't want to overload myself with a huge backlog right when I get it.

If you get W101 and Monster Hunter, you are guaranteed to have a huge backlog by virtue of you cannot be completing both at the same time.

So get both, fuck everything else.

If you get into it and end up going for all the difficulties and try to get the unlockables, you'll get a pretty good mileage out of it. I'm nearing 70 hours on my savefile and I'm not tired of it.

I just see it as the same issue that plagued certain DS games. People don't realize how bad they are at drawing circles when there are two screens to keep track of.

Basically it's a case of "If I can't do it, it's the game's fault."I'm guessing.

Depending on the person.

One man's "artificial difficulty" is just a matter of practice to another.

I think the system was designed to simple and intuitive, so the fact that everyone seems to think it's anything but suggests the criticism holds at least some weight

You want some crazy Kamiya attention to detail?

When you finish 9-B you don't get a voice quip from Nelson when you get your trophy on the result screen. Why? The communications with the Virgin Victory are cut off.

Amazing.
Not really attention to detail in that sense:
he just doesn't have a voice quip for during high-tension situations, including after 009B and after 006C

Holy crap. I replayed the demo today for the second time (after not liking it initially) and I gotta say, this game is pretty awesome I think I will definitely be getting it. The only problem is I just picked up Wind Waker HD so I might have to wait until November.

Seems like this game deserves all the praise that it gets. Hopefully a sale comes by closer to Christmas so I can pick it up.

I fucking hate persistant glitches:
iTelm7VdWZYs8.jpg

I got it right after I quit out of a Kahkoo-regah because I wasn't able to move after being hit (if it's important, my character at the time was
Poseman
).

Any ideas as to how to get rid of it? I've already tried exiting the game and starting up a different operation.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: Idk what I did, but I think being hit as
poseman
might have fixed it.
My theory is that
a heroic forever glitched up, and I noticed all the enemies right after I took this shot mysteriously got knocked unconscious
.

Should my first playthrough be with the Japanese or the English dub? I plan on replaying the game multiple times, and don't wanna waste any time on the English dub if it's bad.

I just finished
007
, how many more stages left? And are the rest only
A and B the way 007 was?

8 and 9 are ABC and Epilogue is only one section like Prologue

Should my first playthrough be with the Japanese or the English dub? I plan on replaying the game multiple times, and don't wanna waste any time on the English dub if it's bad.

Quite the opposite. English dub is great and when I tried switching to Japanese for following playthroughs I ended up switching back to English because it's so much more fun.

Kamiya games need to be played in English at all times apparently. I could switch through all 5 languages in Vanquish and Anarchy but not here

I played through with Japanese dub and text and thought the voice acting was great, but from what I've heard the English sounds OK too, so just go with whatever you prefer.

I really enjoyed Jap dub, and I'll be playing through English next. I think it's good voice acting all round, with different cultural nuances. Jap one has completely different jokes and dialogue from english text sometimes.

After playing more, watching someone play in person, asking them how their learning curve went... well, I have to come to the conclusion that in my opinion the game system in W101 is pretty damned good when played with the right stick. I feel it really is elegant and intuitive but the issue is it is completely different from what anyone could have expected going in. It's introducing the audience to Street Fighter 2 for the first time, and trying to explain how to do a dragon punch.

The English dub is brilliant.

I tried playing through in Japanese mode today and I could barely pay attention.

English dub.

English dub > Japanese dub. Hands down.

Sounds like I should play through English first, then try Japanese. Thing is, I'm likely to skip cutscenes for my subsequent playthroughs.

Just realized that the
Shirogane Comet is essentially the space colony where Vanquish takes place

I thought it looked familiar but watching some of the cutscenes again made it pretty clear.

One of the shots even has the exact same framing, I love this type of stuff!

I feel like we are in wacky world for even being able to write that seriously and mean it. Just goes to show how much love was poured into this.

IDK, I think any production with a large cast of international characters defaults to not Japanese when you consider which language track to listen to.

The game that keeps on giving.

Edit: Saw someone on Miiverse that stated a possible
Guilty Gear
reference with one of the Wonders you find. I took a glance and saw something about
Heaven or Hell
, but didn't read it fully since I had to leave. Any truth, or was he just looking too hard? I know that phrase is in the series, but I guess it could be anything really.

That's just the name of the weapons for Wonder-Sister if I remember correctly. Personally, I saw it more as a Paradisio and Inferno reference from Bayonetta. Her stance is essentially Bayonetta's too.
