The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

it's very rare I complete a game, my backlog is ridiculous and I usually get bored and move to something new halfway in games I play, with few exceptions.

Games that I complete and replay instantly at a higher difficulty setting can be counted on 2 fingers. Basically there was only Uncharted 2 over these last years. And now TW101. I completed it yesterday in Super Easy and I kept playing for 2 hours in Normal. And boy did I enjoy these 2 hours even more than the 17 hours it took me to complete the game.

Saying this game is amazing does not give it justice. Saying it's wonderful is overused now.
Find the most flattering word you can associate with a video game, apply it to the Wonderful 101, and you'll be close to how it feels to be in control of this hero squad.

I actually meant the Kahkooh-Regah on 101% hard, not the actual boss battle, sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
Seems like I'm the one who's not clear enough :p

I was talking about the Epilogue's KR too, is there a special requirement added to the Hard one in 101% Hard? You were talking about stars, do I need to land a super uppercut to clear it?

While I usually do finish all games I start (unless they are really bad) I rarely 100% them to completion. Wonderful 101 is the first game I 100% in a long time.

Yep, it's all good. Oh, and I just unlocked Unite
Big
. So damn cool, it feels amazing finishing off big enemies with it.

Yeah it's a very powerful Unite Ability, although its not that good for combo score.

Oh that one is actually the same as the Hard one.
The difference is that instead of the 008C Boss battle you fight the 005C Boss battle, and aside from the usual "Can't get hit" requirement you are also only allowed to hurt him through KO Punch. I think in this specific Kahkooh-Regah gathering the platinum stars for the KO Punch is harder than in a regular match.

Overall It is a looot easier than the Kahkooh Regah of the epilogue in hard though.

They're both kind of bad unfortunately

WF has a nice bit of continuous damage that you can juggle with if your lucky.
PF is used in the same situations you would do a Unite Super Scope bombing, but with a bit more damage.

You still technically have to buy both anyway for the bottle cap.

They both burn your entire bar though.

They're not nad until you factor in the cost, then there's no reason to use them. Besides style I guess.

Just beat the game, wow. Amazing, just amazing. The game just keeps topping itself with every operation, and after gathering enough powerups you can pull so many amazing moves. It's up there with Platinum's/clover's best games such as Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta.

Oh, and is there a way to speed up fights with the
giant crab
type enemy? I was pretty much just waiting for it to
get up on it's legs and then go to town, crack it open, etc. But that makes for a lot of downtime waiting for the right moment.

One insane thing I noticed during one of the fights with it is that
when it opens its mouth to perform attacks you can form a wonder line into it and have Wonderful ones beat it up from the inside. Does a lot of damage.

Only finished the first two operations so far but I already like it a lot. Platinum Games surely is one of my favorite developers at the moment.

If you stand in front of it, it'll try to use its claws on you and certain attacks can be countered by Unite Claw (one of the counters where the character's face cuts-in). Counter it with the following QTE and you'll stun it, immediately opening its shell. If it extends its legs, a 50-Unite Sword should pop each joint off in only two~three slashes. Standing in between the legs should easily pop off two legs at once. If you can make a 100-Unite Sword you can pop off all three if you position yourself right.

alright got the mix master, punch out, and foe today bottle caps. that was a shitty few days but at least they're done. looks like the game gave me the foe today cap without giving me the notification again. whatever, at least i can finally start getting the worthwhile bottle caps now.

Hey there XD. He has a posting pattern which normally gives you a clue. He gives the
"('@') " answer to question like "did you already try the PS4?".. It could be something. It could be^^

It's meant to be a baby. No offense but usually it's his answer to dumb questions. It's a non answer. It doesn't mean anything, in either direction.

So when do I get the ability to block? Or am I overlooking something? I spent 6 hours with the demo before getting the game and was shocked when I couldn't block.

You can purchase it from the Wonder Mart right after finishing the prologue level.

It's called Unite Guts, also make sure you purchase Unite Spring which is your dodge move.

Man, my soul cried when this happen. For a split second, I felt like a kid again sitting on the bed with my face crammed into that small ass tv having the time of my life honing a skill.
Nice little detail about that phase :
The options behavior changes according to the morph you are using, with the gun they turn around you, with the sword they follow you, ...

I completed The Wonderful 101 on Sunday. It took me a little over 17hrs to complete on normal. Here are my thoughts on the good and not so good of the game:

Good:
Despite struggling at first, I ended up loving the deep combat system. The game really gives a sense of being able to tackle each encounter in a variety of effective ways.

The game has a great quirky sense of humor that really grows on you as the game goes on.

Great sense of scale and escalation as the game goes on. Things just keep getting more and more over the top as the game progresses which perfectly fits the style of the game.

Not so good:
The camera. From platforming sections to trying to execute a ukemi the camera often times felt more like a hindrance than a help.

The genre shifting can be seen as a plus or a minus depending on your perspective. I think it would have been fine without the game scoring you at the end of each level, but since it does score you and any continues will destroy your score the genre shifts never felt fun to me. I would almost always fail at least once during the genre shifts trying to figure out how I was supposed to do everything. I also I think those areas would be annoying in subsequent play throughs.

The controls. I don't claim to be great at video games, but even I should be able to master the controls of a game after 17hrs of play, but by the end of wonderful 101 I still couldn't confidently call upon my entire arsenal of unite abilities without fail. The bomb unite would often times not take and combine claw was awful after upgrading the speed of the attack line. I even had occasional problems executing extra large unite fists.

Overall:
I'm not quite as over the moon for the game as some people are in this thread, but I do think the positives far outweigh the negatives. The combat system and overall style of the game make it a must play if you own a Wii U.

Now I need to get around to playing Pikmin 3...

Just finished it...no words...except: holy SHITBALLS! Truly the game that keeps on giving. Never before have I seen such diversity in a game and it never lets up from beginning to end. Truly exhilarating stuff. That ending man...tears of joy. One of the year's best for sure, but then I don't need to tell you guys that. There are flaws (platforming sucks), but they pale compared to the game's triumphs ands they are many.

Loved, loved, loved it!

Where can I see the info pages for the team members I have? When I look in Wonderful Files in options, only Red is there.

You have to find the files in order to read them, they are hidden through the game.

But if you beat the game you unlock the gallery which has a "Hero Gallery" which shows all your current heroes and their information on a separate tab (In the case of the main 7 it is the same as The Wonferful files)

For those just finishing it now - give yourself a tiny rest. Go about your life and come back in like a week. I'm doing it now and I'm not joking, the game is magically even better the second time through, just as Kamiya was suggesting.

That first time you get a gold or platinum trophy (I got my first at the start of my second run) is just such a wicked feeling.

I can't get over this game's music. A lot of people say the last boss theme is the best, and it is a hell of a track, but THIS is my favorite track in the game. Bar none.

It sums up the atmosphere and intensity of the game perfectly.

You might think so. But replaying the game, going for platinum, those genre shifts really liven up the flow. By the time you're at around the level necessary to get platinum, most of the normal enemy encounters are a known quantity. Those battles are etched into your fingers and memory though hours of repetition. But those one in a game genre shifts still have a freshness to them. Their rarity spices up what could have become a core combat grind without it very well.

Honestly I'm less of a fan of the genre shifts on replays.

I kind of feel there's too many of them. I mean they're fun figuring out initially. but when just trying to do PP runs consecutively(no checkpoint resetting) it's not really fun when your one hit comes from those sections.

I also think they're betrayed by their depth. I mean everyone complained about the motorcycle and shooting sections in Bayo, but something they had going for them was that they were simple and easy to PP. So you didn't have to spend alot of time on them. Pretty much hold shoot and don't get hit on Route 666 congrats you're a master. Turret section in the last level, hold shoot and don't get hit. Congrats you're a master. Now get back to the real game.

Here the minigames are not only more abundant. but they're also alot deeper. Specifically the Punch Out, Gradius and Space Harrier inspired sections. So to PP them consistently you have to spend ALOT more time with them than you would have ever spent with the minigames in Bayonetta.

and I think that's both a good and bad thing. I think the games are alot more fun for it. but at the same time I feel it takes attention away from the core game. Like in Bayonetta I feel doing PP's consecutively was something attainable for my skill level and a fun challenge of my mastery of the game mechanics because there were barely any distractions from it throughout the level. The challenge came from being consistent at the regular combat. Here I can't imagine doing a consecutive PP run on most stages specifically because of some of the minigames within them. Regular combat in 101 is sadly the easiest part of the game.

Gonna have to agree with Retro_ The non-conventional sections are fun and add variety, but if you are trying to PP a stage those sections are going to become really frustrating.

Since we are forced to master
The Punch Out fight for the bottlecap and kahkoo-regah
that section becomes a lot better once you master it completely, Just like the regular game. (To be fair, out of all the non fighting parts that one is my favorite)

Wonder if it would be the same with the other sections, would they feel a lot more rewarding if I put down the time to master those? I think the problem is that unlike the regular combat they are few and broke into little sections between the levels so you won't be playing them as often, so it'd be a bit repetitive to learn them.

Finally had a chance to play this after buying it at launch and it's every bit as great as I expected. I'm not even encountering the control issues reviews mentioned and I'm far from an expert at these sorts of games. The perspective does create some camera issues every now and then during the one off navigational/puzzle sections and it can be hard to read the action sitting back on the couch (so much so that I find standing next to the tv to be dramatically better) but I suspect I will get better with that as time goes on. Operation 1 and the first
Vorkken fight- didn't realize this game had rival battles-
down and looking forward to diving into the rest.

In other news, Saur has just put out his third system mechanics vid. The first two really let me hit the ground running when I began, having had no hands on experience prior. Great stuff.

They do feel good once you've mastered them, none of them really bother me other than "that part" in 9-C.

You know what I'm talking about.

The on rails sections are probably my least favorite part of the game. Specifically the ones in Operation 002.

and has anyone really mastered the punch-out part yet? I really want to see someone adept at counter-punching demolish those sections. (I still can't grasp the timing and my rush to unlock everything has left me unwilling to experiment with it further)

Don't know if it's new tech, but today I figured out you could dodge cancel morph breaks while fighting the fast claw dudes.

Forgot to say dash cancelling is possible too and the better option.

Saur uses it in his video though so I guess it's not really news at this point.

Yeah that section. I heard that someone in GameFAQs (lol) claimed that if you get damaged in that section it won't count towards your overall score, but only in that section.

Couldn't find the post, and I haven't had the time to play w101 lately so can't really say for sure, doubt it'd be true, it'd be an strange inclusion.

This game was simply incredible. Such a wonderful cast of characters on all sides, excellent gameplay, non-stop action, epic boss battles and a mood-pumping soundtrack.

Game of the Year for me for sure.

Gat Dam.

One of the things that was irking me was some of the sound design in the minigames. Often you're playing in larger than life scenarios but the sound seems lackluster, relatively. I'm just playing with stereo though.

Oh it counts, it makes getting Pure Platinum on that level absolute hell. It just sucks.
