This is why I want GPU manufacturers to invest in game studios to make games "the way they are meant to be played" on PC.

They are. Nvidia and AMD have both spent money to shoehorn these technologies into upcoming titles, like you are about to see on the stream. It's the best way for them to move the high end profitable hardware. 4k gaming brings even the beastliest rigs to their knees, so that's going to be a big push from both companies. Displays aren't there yet, but it will be here sooner than you think.

More PC games being sold in general is what would really kick off a visual arms race. Look towards SteamOS for that.

Games that are multiplatform are built to the lowest common denominator (XB1) then features get added back in for PC if we're lucky. A lot of these technologies are simply beyond console level hardware.

lol, yeah. While I'm loving what I'm seeing, I'm not really getting too excited because the hardware just isn't there, even for PCs. Just look at the implementation of current PhysX stuff and the performance hit that results. Hell, look at how punishing BF4 is on CPUs. Imagine if the game was running the water/fire/liquids stuff too? Fuck me.

We dont know if it will end up on PC, but it would be really stupid from Bungie and Activision to not too. Its perfect game for PC audience.

Yes it is. Too bad we don't get any news on that end. Confirmation either way would be great. Only must have Next-Gen title for me right now.

The blog doesn't really work for me :p The pictures are not as impressive as the stream I guess and I don't really understand the tech heavy bulletpoints. I'll wait for an article about the conference.

PhysX 3.x is multithreaded. Will be seeing it used a lot more next year with the growing adoption of Unreal Engine 4, and the launch of next-gen games.

Imagine if BF destruction and ragdoll physics only functioned on Nvidia cards.. that would mean pretty much only half of PCs will be able to play the game properly.

Software PhysX is the most widely used physics solution in the industry. Like the GPU-accelerated version, the latest iterations are multithreaded.

I know that this means that You will be able to use CPU for computation, but what about other GPUs? :>

I would love to have unified solution, so every game and gamer could benefit from that.

Yep, thats why i think Destiny will almost surely land on PC.
 
Physx can run on either the CPU or GPU. For best results you'll probably want both a monster CPU and SLI to offload physx onto the 2nd GPU. BF4 is already pretty punishing on i7 4-6 core CPUs.

I'm excited but also looking at the current crop of games that implement "fancy stuff" (a technical term). The performance hit for PhysX and tessellation in Arkham City was quite severe.

Not even mentioned as a feature for Batman which was one of the best and most advertised uses of the technology. So few games really got it right, but when they did it made a OMGWTFBBQ difference. Playing Trine 2, Arkham City, Skyrim and some others at 1080p60 3D was a sight to behold.

The Oculus Rift and competitors will surely take titles like Skyrim and FPS's further, but something like Trine or Civ5 probably won't work the same way as a monitor...

Andy, I think will be intereseting to sponsor a bunch of updates for already published physx games . There are significant problems here and there that prevent physx has a clean image in the eyes of players who are not convinced to make the jump . I mean things like

- Mafia 2 physx gpu is activated only if you have a dedicated graphics and do not advise on that. Even if you have an nvidia card , if you enable high physx effects (cloth simulation) these run on the cpu with consequent poor performance.

- Alice Madness Return has performance issues with the smoke from the pepper gun. If you change the value of particles on the screen (modifying .ini) can be fixed but this affects fluids even if fluids do not cause performance problems.

- Borderlands 2 , physx fluids show visual artifacts when using large resolutions .

- Hawken , physx performance is far below than expected even with a 680GTX Tri- SLI dedicating one gpu for physx.

- Dark Void , smoke performance of the jetpack is not enough in any gpu configuration.

and above all, the older physx games that are on steam should add in their requirements "Legacy physx libraries" because many users are lost in that point.

These are the kinds of things that give a bad name to an awesome tech like physx , and with some support from you those can be fixed, I think you could leave much more polished games .

I've heard that lots of DX11 games use deferred rendering, which means MSAA cannot be used (often substituted for something like the mentioned TXAA). Going forward, does this mean MSAA will cease to exist (at least in major AAA games)? I've noticed that none of my DX11 PC games natively support MSAA. Are we transitioning to something else, like SMAA?

I post it whenever a PC port rumor pops up on GAF!
