he asked why a deal would include a product that might be delayed. I grabbed a pic that showed WatchDogs bundle because those bundles were probably available up until the day it was delayed.

People shouldn't be surprised about these "poor" showings. I played the PS4 for the first time yesterday and wasn't blown away by any of what was shown. This stuff is unfinished and also most of these demos are old builds from E3. My main thing was getting my hand on the controller and seeing how that felt. With that said I'm getting the PS4 because I know whats coming down the pipeline.

So I got my hands on this at Future Shop in Vancouver today. Here are my thoughts:

Found out a store five minutes from my house had received an Xbone demo kiosk and went along to check it out. First impression is that the most impressive thing about it right now is the controller.

Only game available to play was Forza 5. Demo starts you on the dashboard, so I selected Forza and it took an absolute age to get into a race. Like at least a minute, maybe more. It felt like an eternity because Xbox guy kept asking me questions about what PS4 has over Xbox and why I'm choosing it. Forza itself looked quite pretty during the race, but certainly didn't feel like anything 360 wouldn't be more or less capable of.

The controller is extremely reminiscent of the original Xbox S controller. Felt great in my hands, the rumble comes from lots of different places (including the triggers) very comfortable to use. Stick was responsive and the triggers felt fine.

Staff member demoing the unit on hearing that I had PS4 preordered asked me three times what PS4 has that Xbox doesn't. I'm not sure if he was genuinely curious or if he had been told to ask.

I mentioned the lack of Kinect
$399 price point
and the extra power + the whole about turn over always-on etc

Will probably pick one up eventually, but not at $499 with kinect

I would buy a PS4, but its abusive price (Brasil) disappointed me, and I pre-ordered my Xbox One today. I hope to enjoy it (its my first xbox ever), but graphically PS4 impressed me much more also. Anyway, Ryse and Forza 5 seems the same level as PS4 titles...

Still have my preference for PS4, but pretty excited to see what Xbox is all about.

As much as I hate to agree with MS defenders and thread whiners, a thread title change would probably make this more civil.

Something like "Xbox One Tour - Impressions"

I returned being highly disappointed in the system: Even knowing the Xbox One isn’t going to be the most powerful of consoles, I expected much bigger a graphical improvement than I got to see with my own eyes.

Even Ryse's and Forza 5's gameplay visuals didn't strike me as a breakthrough, they seemed more of a refinement of current generation graphics than the great leap that I expected to experience after eight years. Battlefield 4 looked downright terrible (and Kinect leaning constantly interfered with unimpeded gamepad gameplay - I finally put a carton in front of the sensor to get a good go at the game), FIFA 14 didn't seem noticeably different from current gen and even Dead Rising only looked so-so.

Another thing to dislike about the Xbox One was the controller: The shape of the lower grips made it uncomfortable to hold, the sticks seemed too tiny and the bumpers were just strange (the amount of force needed to press them just didn't seem right/comfortable).

The Kinect only games on display were on an equal footing with current gen Kinect in terms of gameplay. The increased recognition fidelity wasn't immediately noticeable or beneficial in these games. The console itself seemed pretty clunky and big, and Kinect is a huge monster of a camera bar.

People that recognize my username on this forum may realize that I've preferred the PS4 to the Xbox One for a long time now for rational reasons (better performance, more interesting line up, cheaper): Even then, I didn't expect to get this negative an impression out of this event – it’s kind of shocking, really.

What were other Gaffer's impressions of their play experience? Do you expect people will be disappointed at launch time with the general lack of a visual fidelity leap?



Edit: As people were asking for more detailed information, I'd like to add some additional impressions.

In general, the most obvious graphical flaw: Aliasing absolutely everywhere. Of the "graphical powerhouses", I noticed it the least in Ryse and FIFA (anything but impressive on any other front), most of everything else was marred by it (Forza certainly, BF4: OMG aliasing is everywhere!)

These were the games on display:
Battlefield 4 - was playable in a local multiplayer configuration (8 vs. 8 on a warehouse type conquest map with a bit of an outside area. The game seemed like a huge mess, extremely noticeable aliasing as well as huge amounts of pop in were maring the experience. The already mentioned leaning-interference by Kinect (which can probably be disabled) further soured me on this version of the game.
Crimson Dragon - didn't seem like my type of game, only played it for a short while
Dead Rising 3 - had a free-roam demo without any stated aim, I quickly tired of the gameplay (slaying hundreds of zombies, combining items). Graphics didn't impress either, but didn't notice any performance problems. Could display a huge amount of enemies present, although they never felt all that threatening. Driving over zombies in a car was fun for a short while
FIFA 14 - really hard to see what's "next gen" about this title, there's absolutely no reason to upgrade for this game. Could almost pass for an Xbox 360 or PS3 title, except for the higher resolution (that isn't really a huge factor to the overall impression)
Forza 5 - looked nice, even though I expected more out of it as a graphical showcase. It seemed less of a leap than I was hoping for. The impulse triggers (individual vibration for both triggers) were put to great use in this game, you can kind of "feel" the brakes, which is pretty cool.
Just Dance 2014 - didn't play, just watched - I think what you expect is what you get
Killer Instinct (with gamepads as well as fight sticks) - seemed fun, but I'm not really qualified to judge fighting games. Not something I would ever play were I to own an Xbox One.
LocoCycle - graphics are very plain, as is obvious from all the existing media on the game. In game talk (commentary by mechanic and main character hanging out of motorcycle) seemed rather annoying and unfunny. Gameplay was not complex from what I saw, shooting and beating cars, other cycles and flying enemies.
Ryse - reminded me of a prettier Uncharted in terms of graphics, suffered some small stutters that interrupted gameplay which was wave based arena combat ("horde mode") that got tiresome very quickly as combos are very repetitive and tasks (emptying cauldrons, defeating catapults) to complete among fighting enemy waves in the arena were repetitive in terms of required player action (walking/rolling over to direction marker and pressing a button).
Zoo Tycon - a limited management game, didn't seem to offer much creative freedom in terms of park layout. Certainly don't expect fine-tuning and building on the level of a Roller Coaster Tycoon. This title suffered extreme performance problem, and certainly didn't look pretty in return for stuttering.
Kinect Sports: Rivals - Very reminiscent of Kinect Adventures, gameplay seemed equally uninspired (leaning and opening/closing hands for jet skiing, and stretching and grabbing as well as jumping for climbing. Pretty graphics for games of this type.
Peggle 2 - it's Peggle!
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood - didn't play this one

Edit 2: The event location
This Xbox One Tour event (in Vienna, Austria) was at an event location called "Metahall", still part of the city and urban area but not really located in what people would consider the "city core" (but not hard to get to at all).

I didn't take any photos at all, as the Xbox staff present was averse to it (I probably could have sneaked a few pictures). As part of the (free) attendance ticket, I received one voucher for a free beverage (half liter) as well as a snack (there were multiple options available, bangers with mustard and bread, for example). The atmosphere was pleasant, all stations were very easy to get to (relatively few people were present, many free stations).

Sounds like feedback collecting. Personally I think it's a decent way to gain data of potential customers, asking them face to face rather than over forums

Don't blame you at all, if I was in Brazil and able to afford either of them it would be the Xbox. That price on the PS4 is insane.

If the consoles where I lived had that big of a gap in price than yes I would choose X1 over PS4 just to experience that next gen feel and have a good time.

That's how the majority NeoGAF has been since the Xbox One was announced. You're a shill, a market plant or hate your self or your a fanboy if you like the Xbox One and the PS4 is better in every way. Your opinion on what you like is no longer valid Apparently. Or, just maybe, the Xbox One has significant drawbacks that still persist to this day and are reflected in my opening post? Don't take valid criticism of the console so personal.

Though you have to admit, this place as become incredibly Toxic for those of us who actually plan on getting the X1 and in my case getting it first as I almost always go multi platform. People don't seem to believe when I say I prefer the X1 over the PS4. It like shocks them or something and they can't believe so they try and rationalize it by calling me any of the titles I listed in my earlier post.

There's already one. This forum is hilarious, make a legitimate thread about how much hate there is in this forum, it gets locked right away. Have the sony guy make a "he's not impressed by xbox" thread, even tho other threads already cover the xbox bus tour, it'll go on for 167 pages. Good job mods, you're doing a bangup job.

I'm only a "Sony guy" because I genuinely think they have the much more appealing system on offer this fall. These two consoles aren't equal, why would I not prefer one to the other?

The leap between PS3/360 and PS4/X1 is pretty big to me. I've said it before and I'll say it again; most people aren't gonna see a big difference unless you point it out to them.

Eh, those other threads aren't locked, but most people don't go into em because it's just people who went to the events giving their own impressions and such.

Sure, but there's been two general threads for this exact thing. What prompted OP to make his own thread? It's quite odd. His writeup was good, but other people have done very similar write-ups in other threads and it didn't prompt this sort of reaction.

While that's completely understandable, there is no way you couldn't have know posting such a opinion wouldn't be met harshly from those who find the other console more appealing, and don't agree with your assessment on the games they'll be buying for it. Just one big recipe for trouble. :|

And yet somehow this is the first impression I've seen from this tour on GAF. I don't know why people think burying impressions in threads that aren't titled as such is a good idea. Anyway no one is stopping anyone from posting positive impressions here, in fact some people already have. It's all good.
