Sonic Lost World |OT| Too X-treme for the Galaxy

I'm loving the hell out of this game, and I've got the controls almost entirely down, but I just have one question.

Is is possible to parkour up a wall then turn so as to run across the other side for a wall run? It seems like there's a couple of places the game gives me the option of doing this (ring trails), but I can't figure it out. I just seem to be able to only run vertically and lose momentum.

It's first running up the wall, even vertically will work and pushing stick in the direction you want to go with A/B based from the instruction booklet, I think it works with ZL too and bring you to the other side.

Yep, that's it. I just needed a button press to change direction. Thanks, guys.

Having finished Frozen Factory, I really have to say - for all the people saying the story or whatever is weak, the cutscenes has become what I've been looking forward to see the most in this game. They're absolutely awesome and it's why I feel they should continue with this direction. I used to dread what godawful thing would happen next in previous 3D Sonic games but his game goes above and beyond, is legitimately hilarious and actually quite heartwarming at times.

The reluctant partnership of Eggman and Sonic creates for some awesome dynamic we really haven't seen before. It's usually been a pretty straightforward rivalry-kind relationship but now that they're forced to partner up under circumstances that go beyond the Adventure 2 team-up, I love seeing just how the two characters, including Tails, square off between each other and just how much they resent one another. I always thought Eggman was a great villain but seeing the level of interaction he ends up having with the heroes really shows just how venomous they can be towards each other when they aren't leaving it down to beatdowns to speak for themselves. Eggman's "I'm a complicated guy" scene is probably one of his best moments ever as a villain and character in the series. It was pretty funny and at the same time did a really good job in representing his general attitude throughout the series.

Seriously Sonic Team - keep these writers on board on story and writing duties. I can't believe I'm actually playing a Sonic game where the story is actually something I really, really like. The characters in this game are fantastic.

Once again, the music of this game is really awesome.
I dont know get how Tomoya Ohtani ( and Tokoi, Kumatani, Kobayashi...) arent as well know as other composers. They're friggin genius.

The music of this game isn't clicking with me. I don't think it's bad at all. I'm just not in love with it the way I have been with previous Sonic soundtracks. In fact I'm sitting here right now and trying to think of any level music and hum to it but I'm drawing a blank. Usually Sonic level music is instantly memorable and I get them stuck in my head. It's not happening with this game. Maybe it'll grow on me over time.

I wasn't going to even try to worry about the story in this one. Now I'm looking forward to it. Thanks NotLiquid. Sincerely.

I played Sonic and the Black Knight.

$5 down the fucking drain. Holy shit. 100 times worse than I thought it'd be, and I already was expecting a 1/10 game. I couldn't even make it 5 levels in.

At least Sonic Colors is fantastic! I cannot wait for Lost World.

So I finished the game.

I will admit. The game falls apart near the final boss. It builds up for something really big but it could have been so much more and there's quite a few plot threads hanging. Unlike Generations though it isn't leaving nearly as big of a sour aftertaste.

Also, on the subject of the difficulty spike, after finishing 7-2 which seemed to be the dreaded stage of the game I couldn't help but tell myself... "that's it?" It was pretty challenging but it didn't give me any more trouble than DKC2's Bramble Levels did.

Admittedly there are a lot of problems with the lives management. I did get frustrated a lot, but Lava Mountain was probably where least of my woes were at, which might be cause I'd gotten so used to the mechanics by then that it was less of an issue. Sky Road was probably the hardest stage I tackled that had most elements where it felt like I was dying cheap deaths, so it's probably my least favorite stage.

I might write my concise thoughts on the game as a whole once I let it sink in... But honestly I don't think I'm going to change my tune as I'm fully confident in saying at least this much - Lost World is a good game. Sometimes it manages to be great even. The seeds are here for a fantastic formula for future Sonic games. Is it shamelessly borrowing elements of his old rival? It's impossible to deny that, but some of the elements that make it clear are incidentally some of the best stages in the game.

So honestly, I'd recommend this game for anyone who's dying for a good platformer to tide them over before 3D World comes out. It really is one of Sonic's better 3D outings, and as a game it's solid and consistent throughout until the endgame.

I am liking Sonic Lost World both the 3DS and the Wii U version, though I don't like how hard they made getting lives in the Wii U version.

I never even bothered to finish it and I was on the final section of the game.

Black Knight truly is a terrible game. Of the more recent ones, keep Colors, Generations and Lost World. Get rid of the rest.

Yeah, it's a great ost, as was Color's. Some really great tracks in there and I love all the different influences.

yeah black knight was rubbish. i'm a gigantic fan of secert rings so i was massively hyped for it but they pissed away everything that made that game fun.

Honestly, this and the eagle make zero sense to me, I can't control either by tilting, I'm doing something wrong?

And the Laser ability seems to really suck now? It seems to do nothing? Like, going from one to the other? Colours had elaborate patterns it'd go though, LW seems to do nothing.

Only awesomer one is the Drill, 2D style. There's some 3D underwater drill stage, and I had so much trouble dealing with it.

Oddly I can handle Eagle with ease but Asteroid is a disaster, just obtaining that one red ring in the second stage of the game was quite the ordeal.

That's true. Unleashed gave you more than enough lives. The trial and error based level design was pretty badly done imo, but at least lives system was well balanced.

By the way I think I've changed my mind on Lost World. I do think Colours and Generations are better games. I think Lost World does a number of things better, but once you reach a certain point the game becomes more frustrating than fun and the game starts to fall apart. It doesn't help that the wisps are so badly done as well. As an overall package it's not as consistently enjoyable as Colours and Generations. Both of those games have better 2D gameplay as well. I think Lost World has the best 3D gameplay and controls in the series and the variety of level design is better.

But with the weak 2D gameplay, badly implemented lives system that doesn't match up with the difficulty in the later stages, forced gamepad bullshit and mediocre boss fights I can't say the overall package is as fun as Colours or Generations despite the things it does do well. But the foundation had been layed and if we just get a more focused sequel based on the strengths of the 3D gameplay and there's a lot of potential for Sonic to do great things with this formula. Hopefully sequels to this will be as big an improvement as Colours and Generations were over Unleashed and do a good job of refining a formula.

Iizuka: Sequel? (laughs)

Great to hear such strong impressions for this game. i'm not exactly a big Sonic fan, but more good games to play on the Wii U might push me to get it.

Is the WiiU and 3DS versions the same (with the 3DS unique lvls exception)? I have the WiiU version in the mail from england but it'll be a few days more and I really want to play the 3DS version. But Not at the expense of the WiiU version :)

unlocked super sonic
tbh I quite enjoyed it, apart from the cheap deaths
and there are a lot of them
. But all in all decent game, I'd personally give it a 7/10

Completely different games. Just play it and skip the cutscenes. Don't let the quality of the 3DS game scare you off the Wii U game, though.

I've completed all the missions on the Wii U version and a message popped up saying "Congratulations, you've completed all the missions. Here's your reward." and then nothing happened. What is the reward? I can't find a thing... Has my game glitched me out of the final reward, after 50 hours of (great!) gameplay :(?

For console owners who loved Colors: how would you compare this to that game?

It's very different. You can like one and hate the other one, like both, or hate both. Lost World is a lot more complicated, but quite slow. Level design is a bit more varied in Lost World, a bit more platforming focussed. Wisps are not really fun though.

Oh please. Lost World has a bunch of problems but don't you dare for a moment try to tell me that ditching the boost gameplay wasn't absolutely the right thing to do. That style of gameplay was about as good as it was going to get and the gameplay style introduced in Lost World has more potential than that style ever did ever did.

I like Colors more, but that's only because I prefer that gameplay style. I think they perfected 3D Sonic with that engine. I applaud them for trying something different with Lost World instead of going the safe route.

Not that Lost World is bad - I'm actually really enjoying it. It does have some stupid sections/levels, but so does almost every other platformer. In the end, I think it all comes down to expectation. Every Sonic fan should definitely give it a try. I'm very happy the reviews didn't scare me away.

Chill. It was a joke.

I am actually looking forward to playing this game.

After trying and failing numerous times to get the fourth red ring in 1-4 I conclude that the Asteroid Wisp is without a shadow of a doubt the worst thing in this game, the worst of forced gyro and movement in general, the worst of jumping mechanics, the most unexplained of features (tilt to move is all they tell you), it's the perfect storm of shit.

Granted I'm feeling substantially under the weather today so maybe I wont have quite so much venomous hate when I try again tomorrow.

Thought I'd write down how the gameplay breaks up for the 3DS version for anyone curious. Spoilers and such.

Windy Hill:
- Tutorial level
- Act 1 is mainly 3D Galaxy-esque gameplay, pretty linear, some Asteroid wisp gameplay, ends in a giant Caterkiller chase.
- Act 2 is one long dark, linear 3D cavern, atmospheric music, a lot of chasms, and you can go back later and use Fireburst wisp.
- Act 3 is completely 2D, Green Hill Zone-esque with pleasant music, can go back later and use Laser.
- Boss is the purple guy chasing you around a globe with his giant moon ball, you can repeat later with use of Fireburst.

Desert Ruins:
- Act 1 is a big open 3D level, multiple routes, Asteroid gameplay, giant worms, pretty great level.
- Act 2 is 2D, inside a dark tomb, some switch puzzles. Can go back later with Drill and find secret routes.
- Act 3 is 3D, and one long multi-part obstacle course with sand that shoots you along, can go back later with Quake.
- Boss is the fat yellow guy, not too different from first boss. You can use Asteroid on him. I beat him in 45 seconds first go.

Tropical Coast:
- Act 1 is 2D, and almost entirely underwater, lots of Drill use and giant puffer fish, really pleasant music. Like Colours' Aquariam Park (not as good though).
- Act 2 is a giant juice blender! This is one of my favourite levels. You explore sub-levels to find giant apples needed to go into the main hub machine. The applejuice then carries you higher. You can use Lightning on this level but I haven't really found much of a use for it yet.
- Act 3 is one massive 3D Drill level. Drill does not work well in 3D. You explore huge multi-route levels, but the wisp controls like crap. There's a few parts where you drive it up the middle of a huge vortex. It's tricky and pretty bad.
- Boss is the old guy. You run around a globe in 2D, countering the fruit he rolls at you. Now and then you can use Drill to surprise him.

Frozen Factory:
Act 1 - Stodgy snowboarding section, introduced to the Lightning wisp which is used for platforming and chain-kills. You also roll a few snowballs around and finish with more snowboarding.
Act 2 - 2D level, lots of platforming and wall-dashing, and some opportunities for Laser when you get it later.
Act 3 - Massive 3D puzzle-heavy level. A giant bastard snowball follows you around for most of the level and you have to avoid it. Also lots of snowballs to push into holes, and some Quake wisp action you can replay it for.
Boss - The girl. She's in a giant snowman and you have to use Lightning to swing up high enough and get in a hit.

Silent Forest:
Act 1 - Quite a good 3D spherical level. You get Quake here, and spent a lot of time rolling around crushing Cluckoids and opening up paths using Quake-only switches. Also some 3D skydiving bits.
Act 2 - More 3D, this time on a linear path. Lots and lots and lots of grind rails, Cluckoids on grind rails and some optional use of Lightning.
Act 3 - 2D! Amazing music and lots of platforming, with some use of Laser. A giant owl keeps watch in the second part of the stage and changes the level design slightly if you get spotted.
Boss - Emo-kid. You have to identify which of the many owls he's in, and try not to hit the decoys, looking around using gyro. After a few hits he goes down.

Sky Road:
Act 1 - 2D level that plays as a homage to Casino Night Zone. You can play giant bingo, and yeah, it's not a bad platforming level really. Again, Laser has a use here.
Act 2 - Fucking terrible level. Decides to use Asteroid for pinpoint chasm platforming for nearly the entire duration. Would rather feed laxatives to seagulls and then go for a quick jaunt along the beach then play this again.
Act 3 - Another dud, although it has an exciting finish. You spend most of it using gyro to control Sonic on a rocket, although one-hit KO's. Luckily after a few deaths it'll give you the stealth bomber remote that makes the whole thing more bearable. A sprint along linear 3D levels at the end lets you blow off steam, and you can come back and use Fireburst if you like.
Boss - the main guy. You skydive in 2D whilst waiting for an opening on his big dragon thing. Occasionally you can cause more damage with Laser.

Lava Mountain:
Act 1 - You fight purple guy and fatso again. That's it.
Act 2 - You fight green girl and blue guy again.
Act 3 - You fight old guy and red guy again.
Boss - Final boss. Feels a bit like Colours' final boss, but worse.

Special Stages:
Collect coloured spheres in space! By spinning around on your computer chair like a retard. Not actually that bad, but the more difficult ones are murder. Also....don't do it on a full stomach, eh?

Act 2 - Fucking terrible level. Decides to use Asteroid for pinpoint chasm platforming for nearly the entire duration. Would rather feed laxatives to seagulls and then go for a quick jaunt along the beach then play this again.

Well damn, this makes my Asteroid grief seem small time by comparison.

Nice stage breakdown by the way.

I was staring at my 3DS with disbelief at how bad it was. It's like, you're gaining altitude by getting higher and higher using clouds or platforms, you're controlling the floatiest, slippiest character ever AND THE CAMERA DOESN'T LOOK DOWN ON YOU. It cranes up and jerks around having a seizure while it gets caught on scenery. This is Shadow the Hedgehog level badness here. Not a bad game overall, but inconsistent.

The more I'm going back to playing the levels the more I'm starting to feel that the biggest reason this game feels like it becomes unfairly hard is because of how little lives you're given.

I mean seriously, the game throws so many rings at you and it not giving you an extra life after the 100 mark strikes me as a massive oversight. The levels themselves aren't that awful with experience or learning specific patterns since they're pretty consistent all things considered, but the issue is you'll be dying a lot trying to get it right and since continuing from a Game Over only yields you four lives, there's a good chance you'll be going through those stages quite a bit before you get it down.

If Unleashed had the same amount of hard-to-scavenge lives set up it'd be an absolute atrocity.

Been playing the Wii U one all day. There's a lot I like, but some of the levels are just totally fucked. The Casino level's second pinball section is a fucking nightmare, and several level elements feel like they were made by some real jerks. There was a point where you used Metropolis Zone styled screws and it sucked so much.

And Tails is a bit of a dick in the game, what the hell.

I have a real hard time getting my head around the parkour system and going from going up a wall and then moving across to the other side of the wall. Sometimes it seems like it'll allow me, and then sometimes it just doesn't seem to work at all?

Also really stupid that the two things Sonic can't home in on are the Wisp Powerups and the Critter Canisters, seriously?

Also I feel like some of these levels would have been a lot better if they just cut them in half and made two levels out of them. Some of the Desert levels are really long.
Maybe he's finally suck of Sonic's bullshit!

So, I guess SEGA won't be releasing a patch that makes 100 rings give you an extra life?

Since the game was built with that in mind, I guess it would break the flow of things?

Zonic

Gives all the fucks
So wait, you don't get lives PERIOD from rings anymore? That seems like a rather strange decision if you're still going to include a live system. Granted, in some games, you could pretty much stock up on them, but it still seems weird to keep lives, but remove pretty much the number one way you earned them.

I can't say I'm seeing the game being "designed" from that outlook. The closest thing implying that is how some stages have lives thrown at you like confetti, most notably a segment in Desert Ruins Zone 2 which has an easy path to reach granting three lives.

The fact that you can get so many rings implies that they might have wanted you to get lives on a basis almost as common as Colors, because I'd breach the 100s really often. Maybe there was a fear from Sonic Team that the game would be too easy but as it stands this minor detail has changed a lot of that incredible ease into frustration.

The difficulty curve itself in level design feels fair. But the lack of any additional possibilities of attempts is what makes it annoying at times.

Yeah, there is a Act in Tropical Coast with about 5+ lives in the clouds. Kind of annoying you have to go and grind those to get enough lives though.
