The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

I just played my heart out on my second run in 003-A, got a whack load of golds and silvers (and a couple platinums I think too?), and yet I got a consolation prize. My jaw was on the floor. How is that even possible!? I was hoping for at least a silver.

You must have either died and continued or used items. Those affect your final ranking and dying pretty much guarantees a Silver or lower, dying multiple times guarantees a Consolation Prize.

Ohhhhh...well I died in one of the secret bonus missions. I guess that counts? It was pretty tough!

Yeah, continuing in the secret missions counts in the final score, even though they don't revive you on the spot. Strangely, quitting them and then coming back to them has no penalty.

I've been playing on-and-off for the last month. Just beat it.

Oh my god.

Wonderful music, wonderful graphical effects, wonderful writing, and gameplay that's constantly giving you new things to master and rewards you for every technique you learn.

The drawing controls have to be my favorite single part of the game. Cool, different, and visceral, they're an absolute blast to use. Never have I loved a game so much just for how you use your controller.

It makes me sad that this game will never receive the attention that overblown franchises like Assassin's Creed get, but I'm nevertheless happy that I've gotten to experience one of the most ambitious and and unique titles in recent memory.

I can't wait to start my second playthrough.

So after much procrastinating I finally booted this up last night after just having it lay around for a few weeks. Beat Operation 001 on normal....

uhhhhhh

this game is fucking amazing

and it gets better, you guys say

holy fuck

While I don't want to rally behind those that say "you ain't seen nothin' yet", because even that first act is incredible, the truth is that you have only scratched the surface of the amazement that is packed in Wonderful 101.

I'm playing through my second time right now and the game only gets better. Not only is the adventure and story really great (platinum and perhaps Kamiya's best) but the gameplay is going to be shining for years. Just so insanely replayable and dynamic.

This is the game that keeps on giving, I'm still hooked and still learning so much about the mechanics.

It really deserves to be played by more people, glad to see some of you are picking it up and enjoying it!

I'm sure that what I'm about to say has already been said, but I want to say it anyway.

It pains me that some people, (not GAF) are not enjoying this game because they are not being patient enough.

When I downloaded the demo, I had no idea what was going on, it only took me 30 minutes to get the hang of the game. I bought the game when it came out.

1. Drawing shapes with the analog stick is fucking easy. Even if you don't draw the shape correctly, you can just draw the shape again, it takes 2 seconds.

2. You don't have to draw perfect shapes, and they don't even have to be large shapes, just draw the shapes very small and you're good.

3. It's not hard to remember which shapes do what, I never had trouble remembering which shapes do what. In combat, when I know what I'm doing, this game can be very fun.

4. This game becomes amazing instantly after the player learns how the drawing works, in combination with Unite Spring, the combat can be incredible.

It's such a unique game, please, give it the chance it deserves.

Quote. Best action ever. The music is really epic. The characters are fantastic. Kudos to Kamiya. It's a game that is the hall of fame of the best VG ever.

Just finished 005.

I don't care who you are, what fanboy bias you have, or if you like action games at all. You need to play W101.

I don't know what kind of cold heartless bastard couldn't love this game, tbhwy.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Finally moved to Community. I should be in this forum more often, so many great threads here.
Started playing a new game, and it's still so very great. Anyone that buys a Wii U MUST get this game with it, no exceptions.

Going slowly through my 101% Hard run, so many consolation prizes thanks to retries in the KRs. This is the difficulty where Ukemi is super useful seeing how a single blow more often than not removes almost a quarter of your lifebar.

Still having fun, the road to the ultimate hidden character continues...

Just started playing the game on my brand new WiiU. I had a lot of fun with the early levels, but feel I'll need some training to really appreciate it. Is there a good gameplay guide online ? I don't think I quite understood the multiple fusions thing, and I'm having a hard time anticipating ennemy attacks (is there some visual/auditive hint like in Bayonetta ? It's hard to tell things apart in the middle of the action...).

Look for system breakdown vids by Saur on youtube, he's the bomb. EDIT : There you go, part 1, part 2 and part 3!

From experience, there's always a tell before ennemy attacks but you have to learn from fighting them instead of looking for an universal indication something is going to come out. Also not all attacks can be blocked so there's a bit of learning to do while on your first run.

Regarding making sense of the action, focus on the circle under your leader and use the Y button so your heroes cling together. After a while you should be able to easilly tell what's going on.

Just remember that the first run is the tutorial, if you feel like keeping on playing after finishing it (which will probably happen seeing reactions here) you can dive back for the real TW101.

Thanks for the links, will watch tonight.

I finally got to play this just now. Played the first two levels, and I don't know ... this game is kind of a massive clusterfuck.

Going to stick with it for the long haul and see if I can get more comfortable with it, but my first impressions are really not good.

It's pretty hard to follow your character, especially when you start putting out other backup unite morphs that auto-attack. There are lots of times where my drawing, or zoom in and zoom out with the bumpers just doesn't want to work. And I too am having a hard time anticipating enemy attacks. I have the blob block and the spring dodge, but everything is pretty chaotic. I feel like I need to sit within 3 ft of my TV. Maybe I'll try that next time ...

Very weird game. Hopefully it grows on me.

If it turns out that I really can't get into it even after finishing the game, I think Bayonetta 2 might be my last Platinum Game on day 1. Revengeance was awful, Anarchy Reigns was awful too.

Maybe you will never really like it. But it is not impossible to get comfortable with what is happening on-screen. The shapes=morphs system where you draw on the screen or with the stick (use the stick) is very good. It works.
Oftentimes there is a lot going on, but familiarity will allow you to keep track of it and prosecute justice upon the evildoers, with violence, effectively. The enemies will become readable, and you will know what they are doing and how to deal with it, if you persevere.
This game works well, is not always going to be a "clusterfuck", for those who persevere in playing it.
Or maybe you just don't like it and never will - but it's a great game none the less.

Well I've gone through 2 missions so far. I'm pretty fucking terrible even though I'm on easy, but I guess that you're kind of supposed to be for a while in a game like this.

I do love how all the characters look like superhero action figures. It seems like that's what they had in mind.

Really happy to see the game getting updated though!

Official update statement (Japanese) here: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/acmj/update/index.html

*Fixed a bug where the Wonderful figure No 24 was not available during progression.
*Other various bug fixes.

It might be placebo but the glyph drawing feels even tighter, there were certain shapes like the rocket pod that could come out when trying to draw a fist if you didn`t draw the circle perfectly. Not happening anymore, it feels slightly tighter overall but like I said might be completely placebo.

Need to spend more time with the game to know the extent of the changes, I want to try 9-C to see if they fixed the cosmetic health bar glitch when the
Meizerr
shows up.

I'm at Mission 7 and suddenly I'm getting the feeling that I'm in way over my head.

I'm playing on Easy and I feel like I'm just fucking terrible. Like nothing I do ever feels right because I'm constantly getting my ass handed to me. Everything just feels way too fast and way too busy to even comprehend what I'm doing wrong. I dunno, I'm starting to get buyer's remorse here.

Operation 7 starts you off with only 10 wonderful dudes so it makes your life alot easier if you recruit enemies during the first mission. When you see enemies glow red before dying you can circle them with the wonder-liner to recruit them, you can wait for the Chew Dough-Goo`s to spawn more guys for you to recruit. I find that attacking the small Dough-Goo`s with Unite Spring Drill is a really good way to put them in that recruit-ready stun state.

The game is alot harder when you don`t have alot of team members because pretty much everything you do relies on them. It`s hard to activate your counter with only 10 guys, you can`t make big weapons and if only a couple of your dudes get incapacitated your options become severely limited. So first order of business is definitely to bolster your forces during the first mission before moving on.

Stick with it, you`re about to see some incredible stuff!

This is great, never had anything game breaking but the more you play it the more you see the glitches (probably caused by the late addition of multi morphs).

I would be down for a DLC really, Heroic Palace anyone?

Is it important which leader you select in your group of heroes ? I changed Wonder Bue to Wonder Bonsai or something like that, and didn't notice any difference, but forgot to switch it back.
Also, the game isn't too clear on what you need to do sometimes. I got stuck against
the three-headed dragon... I kept dying during the chase without understanding what happened, and later on I couldn't understand what I needed to do when there was only one head left...
I had to give up and look up the solution on youtube. :/

Anyway, thanks again for the links Mistouze, it sure helped understanding the mechanics of the game, and it's somewhat missing in the game itself. I remember that in Bayonetta, the hidden levels were a good way to understand the different mechanics, but I couldn't find any of them except for the one that was pointed to me. Is there one in each level ?

The selected leader for each morph will be the character who'll get the most XP with each attack with that morph so you want to change leaders when the current one is leveled up to its max level. Getting to a certain global level for a morph unlocks the extra moves (stinger/rising/cyclone) and the overall level score unlocks new module slots at certain tresholds (watch for the bar on the lower right side on the module selection screen).

Don't thank me, thank Saur on his YT channel :p There's one Kakoo Regah (the equivalent to Bayo's Alfheim Portals) in each non-boss level and I think it's the same for regular secret missions but it might be a bit more random.

Nah you don't have to change the leader ever really.

Apparently there are some differences though between body types even among regular 100 members. Like Wonder Yeti and other big body fist characters can carry morphs faster than Wonder Red.

but overall the system is designed so that you don't even have to pay attention to it. Just use the morph and everyone will eventually level up.

Good thing too because for some reason exiting Kahgoo-Regah portals always resets your lineup back to default. Kind of annoying

man i hope so. I had to start using the right stick for unite hand because I kept getting those damn gun morphs.

Anyway, I'm up to 91 bottlecaps. Finally got the master stomper cap so I'm heading to 101% hard difficulty.

Having spent some more time with the update I don't actually think they tweaked the drawing anymore.

It's pretty much the same, haven't noticed anything demonstrably different, maybe they fixed some rare crash bugs and a couple other issues on top of the figure 24 glitch but I can't verify those.

Finished last night.

It's not perfect, camera gets wonky, and the game has serious pacing issues.

But holy hell, what a ride. I can definitely see why this would get shitty reviews and others would give up on it. This is not an accessible game and doesn't fit into a pre-established easy mold of what's in the gaming zeitgeist right now. If you're trying to just get through it as quickly as possible, you're invariably going to get frustrated. If you take the time to actually understand the mechanics, the gameplay, and the creativity that went into making the game and manage to think outside of the box... well you're still going to be a little frustrated at the beginning. But at some point (around operation 4 I think for me) everything will just CLICK and you'll fall in love with the game and realize how phenomenal it is.

Just wrapped up the first playthrough.

That was absolutely one of the most insane finales I've ever seen to anything ever. The last moments of Bayonetta is probably a little more ridiculous considering what you do at the very end, but TW101 is right there. Completely over the top, never ending energy that keeps going and getting more ridiculous every time you think it might be over. On top of that, I was legitimately laughing when
Wonder Red pushed blue out of the way to name the final move, then started mashing the control panel IN THE SAME WAY I was mashing the Game Pad, then the game cuts back to the cockpit and EVERYONE'S MASHING.
Hilarious.

Thank God for Platinum Games. The amount of crazy love dripping from this title makes no sense. All the way through the wrap up cutscenes, the epilogue, the credits, and the unlocked galleries/model viewers, extra moves, a bunch of secret teammates, etc. The game that keeps on giving.

The game's not perfect, but it's one of the most unique retail experiences I've played in a long time, even with all the little similarities to previous Kamiya titles, or the action genre at large. When you combine the Unite Morph controls + base combat + combo system + the genre switches, it feels so fresh. Definitely a contender for GOTY, and 100% lock for Best Action Game of 2013 knocking Metal Gear Rising out of that spot. I was going to start a different game right after this one, but I can't. That'll have to wait for another day because the high of TW101 can't be topped.

Good luck Bayonetta 2 because :whew:

After a few days I finished this gem I am still thinking about it. For me this is the best action game ever. There is a ridicoluous amount of love in it. It innovates the genre and put you a smile from the beninning to the end.
An incredible game experience. I don't know when it will be topped.
Thank you, Platinum games!

Just bought a Wii U. I thought my next Wii U game after NSMB would be Pikmin, but this demo has changed my mind. Holy shit! I am horrible at it (lots of Bronze and Silver in Normal mode in the demo) but I have never felt better while being horrible at a game.

Drawing on the screen is easier for me at the moment but I have a feeling the right stick might be quicker in the long run.

This is just straight up the best game this year. Maybe even his best action game. Consistently impressed.

Use the right stick. I have to wonder how much of the poor reception was due to viewing the touchscreen as the "right way" to play the game. The two options aren't even remotely close in effectiveness. Right stick is incredibly easy; it's just like entering commands in a fighting game. In fact, I'm absolutely awful at entering even basic input strings in most fighting games and I still find this easy thanks to how forgiving the game is towards accuracy and input window.

I must have been especially stupid yesterday. For some reason, I had been playing under the assumption that I had to click the right stick and then draw using it. Played it again today and noticed I didn't need to press R3. Much quicker than using the touch pad. Got a couple of golds and even a platinum on normal.

Getting closer to getting all the bottlecaps. Hopefully I'll be done this weekend.

I noticed that the update has balanced those big floating spikes in 007. They no longer bother you while you're trying to whip across that gap.

And not long ago I discovered that if you Unite Camp with just a few members, it's just a single sleeping bag. I laughed out loud, it's adorable.

That's really cool! I haven't played that chapter since the update went live, I always thought that part was kind of dumb. Felt glitchy and apparently it was!

That's at least my experience quickly getting some missing wonderful heroes after a month.
