DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Yeah, Xbox One version definitely looks more crisp o_O

It's the contrast. The default gamma settings on Xbox are a little whack, making the image darker and giving it what seems to be a crisper look. The opposite gives the PS4 a washed out look. Those settings don't anything to do with the graphics proper though, and both looks can be achieved on both the PS4 and the Xbox One. It's just brightness/gamma settings for the game or your TV.

PS4 version looks better. That distorced pixeling is a signal of the lower res?

Also XOne version looks darker, maybe to hide those defects?

Not a huge difference anyway. At leasy not by youtube video.

Xbox One version looks great and in some spots better....I guess everyone can calm down a bit now, I expect the COD comparisons to be very similar.

Interesting too.

"Unfortunately, at this time, we can't provide final verdicts for either the Xbox One or PS4 versions of the game. Microsoft has specified that review scores must be held until November 12th at 9:00AM PST, and we were not given the opportunity to play the Xbox One version's multiplayer component. Regarding PS4, there were serious stability issues that repeatedly led to crashes after multiplayer matches concluded. As the PS4 is still more than two weeks away from its November 15th launch date, it seems premature to assume that this issue will not be resolved — and penalizing the game this far from the PS4's launch doesn't seem especially fair. We will further evaluate both next generation versions of Battlefield 4 once they launch on their respective platforms next month."

Looks like they're using some kind of sharpening post processing filter on the XB1. Could be affecting the contrast as well. Looks like the PS4 is only rocking DICE's FXAA. Just speculation though.

Xbox One has way better color (gamma levels, maybe?). Other than that, there's a bit more detail on PS4.

Both look shitty compared to PC. =(

Yeah, I'm actually surprised at how much of a difference there is between the three platforms.

Someone with photoshop knows what they must do.

It's like they just amped the contrast way up on the Xbone version, which gives the illusion of crisper image quality. Which is fine, because it's mostly successful.

Xbox one version runs betters and looks crisper overall.

PS4 has higher resolution, and they are pushing it at 900p while trying to maintain 60fps which causes a few issues.

Look at 1:10 in the DF comparison. PS4 version has higher framerate drop.

PS4 obviously more powerful, but since it was pushed to 900p, it lost some performance.

As a PC gamer, the PS4 version looks extremely playable. Honestly very surprised with how close it is to the PC version.

XO looks nasty in a lot of places, but again, looks fine for most people I'd imagine.

I'm surprised there's so much of a gamma difference again. Figured they would both be close since they're both blu ray players.

I understand the math behind PS4 being Superior, but I can't really see it. Perhaps when we actually get some multiplayer footage of both consoles running full maps the differences in IQ and FR will be overtly apparent.

Dead

well not really...yet
Crushed blacks, oversaturation, 720p, dropped frames (glaringly so in a few instances), noticeably worse aliasing.

No way any one who watched that whole video can say with a straight face the Xbox version is better...

As for the color temperature of each, if you read the article, it is stated that they are still adjusting to the way each system outputs the image to their recording system. They will be doing another comparison when the final versions are released.

I admit it's interesting as to why there is such a color temp difference. The PS4 footage is similar to WiiU footage in that sense (colors are more muted, even blue-ish).

Their videos are hard to pinpoint fine detail though, because they are still of low quality.

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
Canceling my fucking pre-order tomorrow for PS4 version, I'm not paying for this washed out, blurry textured shit. Killzone and Knack it is.

Is anyone else thinking the real bombshell here is PS4 being sub 1080? Expected lower res on xbox... But damn didn't expect next gen to be outdone by PC at launch.

OPs pics are all laughably aliased on the Xbox One *only* - what are you high asses judging when you say Xbone looks better? PS4 definitely the console version to play.

Xbox version does not look better. The blacks are crushed in the video stream giving it more "pop" but totally obliterating any shadow detail. The aliasing in the Xbox version is apparent and FFS, it's ~1/2 the pixel output. All rumors confirmed that the Xbox One is completely underpowered.

My friend was looking over my shoulder just now watching this and actually said: "it doesn't matter what it looks like, it matters what resolution it is."

I wonder if he knows how stupid that sounds. *smh*

It's very bizarre how "blurry" the PS4 version is despite being at a significantly higher resolution than the XB1 version. Other than that, weird how PS4 has different texture maps, resolution bump definitely helps with aliasing, and the XB1 has insanely crushed blacks.

Never underestimate them. They say crazy ass shit all the time.

PS4 version looks better to me in that comparison video, pretty much from start to finish.

Having said that, as I was watching the video I could already guess people would say the X1 version looked just as good or possibly better even before I read any reactions. The difference is just not significant enough to matter.

To be honest, both look the same to me. I can see differences if I squint and look for them, but it's really subtle.

Damn it's super easy to see who here doesn't know what "crushed blacks" are and thinks a picture looks better just because it's blacker. You can do that on the PS4 as well, but like DF said they purposely set their calibrations for both to match. All you gotta do is alter your contrast setting on your TV and the PS4 version will look like the XO version if you like seeing a big black circle in place of someone's face.

It's like someone turned up the brightness/contrast switch on the Xbox version and crushed the black and upped the aliasing in the process.

But it seems to be working though since some people think darker = better.

OK. I'm going to say the X1 version is the better version. Here is what I can see in the videos:

PS4:

* More wash-out color gradiation
* Less anisotropic filtering
* Using Global Illumination (that's why X1 version is darker)
* Using more polygons
* Using more FX
* Lower res textures

X1

* Lower resolution
* Sharper contrast
* Better anisotropic filtering
* Higher res textures
* NO GI
* Lower polygon count
* Lower FX/particles on screen

To me, the X1 version looks better because of the textures and sharper detail.

The textures are identical. There's just increased contrast. Also, XBO is missing Ambient Occlusion.

It's a good thing most every game is 1080p on PS4 if it's got a lousy upscaler. If I had to choose between PS4 BF and XB1, I'd go with PS4. Framerate trumps image quality.

To add to what I already mentioned, I think DICE used the lower resolution on the X1 to allocate resources to higher res textures. You can clearly see the normal maps are higher res than the PS4 version. I guess the X1 wasn't powerful enough for the GI either. And they sacrificed on the polygon count too. You can tell that in the in-car driving scene. Looking at the steering wheel, the PS4 version is much smoother around the edges showing more polygons to make up the curved wheel.
