DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

I thought that difference would be bigger. Lack of HBAO, resolution cuts and a worse quality of FXAA is not really that big of difference for 50% difference in CU.

It was quite logical that there wont be 50% performance difference between two platforms and we have first proof.

Interested to see MP comparisons from retail units, because thats performance meat of BF games.

Yeah dont get your hopes up MP is an even bigger Gap than Single player, Like Low (XBO) vs High (PS4) along with Res increase...ignore the DF videos as they are clearly badly set (In favour of the X1) or just bad luck, we will see. Check the Video Gamer or better still the JackFrags videos much better.

And come on you cannot see the real difference until Gamersyde post proper quality videos, but that said ANYONE with a unbiased view can see the PS4 wins hand over fist as from a pure grunt/technical stance the PS4 is >50% better on this game alone.

I knew this thread would be full of Denial...Denial and FUD everywhere!!!

If that is true games will suffer from a bad upscaler with PS4 versions all the generation. This is important to be clarified.

In the IGN comparisson video faces are way clearer in the XB1 version. So, this is not only due to Digital Foundry having messed up the capture options.

YES! That was the first thing I noticed in the video. Also, the colours are much better on the XB1 verison.

Did an older boy at Microsoft tell you that?

I can only see the Xbox One's RAM issues becoming more evident once developers start pushing the consoles.

Everyone blames the development tools and that it will be better in the future, but they also forget that Sony's tools will also get better

Are people serious when they say the Xbox One version looks better? It's lower res, has lower fps, the jaggies are insane and the contrast/shadows is all messed up, dark areas are so black they eat all the details you see in the PS4/PC version.

Blind fanboyism. They are desperately trying to justify paying more for a lesser product. They jump all over any supposed "negative" PS4 news they can find, and run with it. The xb1 has been getting hammered all day, so they're just venting it appears.

The XB1 version looks slightly sharper with better colours in the IGN comparison video as well.

Never in my life would I think the day would come when a image with no AA solution and jaggies all over the place that are so bad they look like they are fragmenting the buildings in the distance would be a preferred look because it has darker levels and sharpness turned up.

Holy hell

This is officially my favorite thread ever. Thank you for getting so angry at my own perceptions.

Subjectively, I like the way the Xbox One version looks over the PS4 version, and if you don't like that, well... Continue to keep getting angry, I guess.

I agree. I love to play my PC games at 720p with no AA and the Sharpness/Saturation setting at 100.

I'm glad we're on the same boat here.

Seems like xbone has a great upscaler like it did on 360 and ps4 a bad one like the one on ps3, if the games on ps4 aren't 1080p native the only noticeable difference we will see are the aliased images to be more pronounced on the xbone, it definitely looks clear on the xbone, BTW, not buying this game nor the xbone, getting ps4+killzone, never been into battlefield or COD games for some reason, for those that do enjoy this is good because it seems the differences aren't as big as some people were making them out to be

PS3 had no hardware upscaler.

For all of those who prefer the no aa on xbox, thats cool, I almost do too in a mp setting, but all those dust effects won't be heavy in mp anyway.

I would be worried about never hitting 1080/60 this gen.

I was expecting 720 v 1080 w the same framerate and effects.

As it is now the console which costs 100 less runs the same game at a higher resolution, higher framerate, withmore effects....

It ain't good competition.

No worries, we still have the call of duty showdown!

Lmao @ people getting salty when someone prefers the x1 version, salty ass cheese, not sure which version I am picking up yet :/... All my friends are on Xbox live tho

The XBO has nicer textures, but thats it. The PS4's image quality is alot better; the aliasing was pretty terrible in a few parts of the XBO vid, and some details were drowned out by all of the black too.

So the bottom line here is that the PS4 is rendering 50% more pixels and still outputs a higher frame-rate and effects that are absent from the X1 version?
The PS4's softer image is the consequence of a poor choice of AA solution but in terms of raw numbers that's it right?

Pretty much.

It’s actually a larger disparity than I expected really. Predicted we’d just be looking at a resolution difference and perhaps less stable framerate. Still curious to found out whether the artificial sharpening on the DF XB1 images is the result of the console, game or DF though…

And hopefully Dice patch in an anti-alaising toggle on/off option for the PS4 version like PS3 BF3.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
But it was supposed to happen NOW, not a year from now.

Huh? On the contrary, most people believed that there would be absolutely no difference at launch. Turned out to be wrong, there are differences, and they nicely reflect the specs differences on paper.

More natural lighting, better anti aliasing, higher framerate on average, higher resolution.

*shrug*

I mean Xbox one looks great too, but yeah I'm scratching my head at some of the responses in here.

Folks are emotionally invested (some folks way too emotionally invested) in the console they pre ordered/prefer. Also the Digital Laundry pics did confuse alot of folks (myself included). It wasn't until other videos (like JackFrags) really displayed the advantages of the PS4 version.

But it also looks blurred and washed out on the Video Gamer comparison shots. That's nothing to do with DF, right?

that blur is caused by upscaling from 900p, fxaa and youtube compression

Some posters seem to assume everyone who complains about the blur on ps4 is some clueless joe who likes sharpening and other post process crap on their tvs, or one of those philistines who use sweetfx in the screenshot thread.

The ps4 version is blurry (in the jackfrag videos, and it will be blurry on your own tv!)
please don't use the botched DF videos as damage control for the ps4 version, thanks

the xbone version is an oversharpened mess (witcher 3 PR screenshots levels of sharpening )

these two are not related in any way, no need for people to get mad when pointing either of them out.

And this is news to you? Most people pick up their TVs and want them to look the same as when they're in display at Walmart.

It kinda is. I'd assumed that most people calibrated their TV when they went home after purchasing it. I just didn't think they'd calibrate it to look like the display at Walmart. *eek*

This doesn't make any sense, we have the PS4 pushing 50% more pixels, HBAO, better AA all while maintaining a higher average framerate.

Doesn't that directly account for a roughly 50% difference in perf

in conclusion, they both lose?

these are launch games, rushed out, there will be compromises all over the place to get it out on time and running acceptably

Everyone needs to cool their jets. So much anger over this. If someone says something you disagree with, reply calmly with a rational post or do not reply at all. I'm up so now I'm watching you all.

Facts are facts.
The PS4 version is better and saying that people are "cry"ing because they don't like people that are saying the XB1 version is better based on a flawed metric is just childish.

lol. That's hyperbole and a half.

I find it astounding that you think the PC version "shits on the PS4 version" because of what amounts to a slight reduction in resolution (1080 versus 900p). Yet the PS4 version has an even larger resolution advantage over the Xbone, PLUS it renders more effects, PLUS it runs at a higher framerate.

Yes, you can make an argument that NeoGAF predictions about the final difference were somewhat exaggerated. But let's not contradict ourselves here within one post.

Sorry dude but I saw BF4 3800x2100 pictures in the PC screen thread. It is beyond anything the PS4 shows in here with regards to BF4.

And as I said Killzone is the much better looking game and it should be in the spotlight, not a game that isn't even in 1080p. [PS4] winning over Xbone in this title should be taken for granted.

So there is a little bit of a difference. That's alright. Its also a current gen title so i figure we'll be able to compare better if we get a next gen only title that's cross platform that we can compare.

The leap from current gen to next gen so far hasn't looked mind blowing graphic wise. A lot of people will say: "look at the first releases on the current gen and how much it has developed over the years."
I was wondering, and i guess its hard to answer this, will there be as much growth, graphic wise, on these systems? Seeing as they are basically pc's structure wise. Doesn't that mean there isn't as much of a learning curve for developers to squeeze out the bottom bits of the system?

It's a tad off topic but i can't make topics!

Just looking now but can't see. Are there no 60 FPS videos from Digital Foundry using their own video player or they just using YouTube now?

Damn DICE stayed true to your word, FairPlay. BF4 looks awesome just gutted we've still gotta wait 4 weeks to play this, ah fuck it I'm going to double dip, 360 version now & PS4 on the 29th nov.

The most crushing thing about this thread aren't the blacks in the XB1 shots, it's the fact that some people seem to genuinely prefer blown out, sharpened to death footage with edge haloing on top of aliasing you can cut logs with.

For the sake of my personal mental health I'll simply assume they are all too heavily invested in their platform choice to see clearly. That, or looking at the comparisons on a cell phone screen. In a storm.

Also, I'd really expect more from DF than calling an upscale which has such obvious ringing and edge haloing artifacts good in any way. These are supposed to be the experts?

Everyone should be happy, tbh. The PS4 version clearly has an aliasing advantage that you can really see on straight lines in the distance, along with a more consistent framerate...while the XO version holds its own very nicely, and in some instances has more detailed textures (the ground pic people are avoiding like the plaugue).

Im just happy the X1 version doesn't look like the Sega Saturn like GAF assured me it would (does, lol).

$499 and the games are 'good enough'. What a win.

snark aside, I agree - if you only have an xbox one (for the media features, or your friends list, or the MS exclusives) then you'll be happy enough with the multiplatform games.

but if you're an on the fence gamer that doesn't mind the exclusives and wants the best multiplatform - you choose the PS4.

If you're PS360 owner and likely to own both consoles, its likely you'll buy all your multiplatform games on PS4, so MS makes less revenue per users, attach rate drops dramatically.

and of course if you're a playstation gamer you'd buy a PS4 anyway

In the end, though, no matter how the images look at the close (and it's clear PS4 wins), on a technical spectrum what this highlights is even more damning.

We're talking about a game on PS4 that not only fifty percent more pixels on screen thanks to the resolution, but also has a better framerate, AO and other features. We're talking about a game that just on a technical perspective is dominating the XBO. So, that part of the argument people have been having around launch games is over - there are major, HUGE differences.
