I usually don't bother getting Windows-only stuff on Steam since I dislike having to use Bootcamp, but... for this game I made an exception!

also these cutscenes are hilarious i probably should have bought overkill before now

"I like how you think. Though wasn't it Ghost Squad? I remember that one getting a crazy Wii port with panda costumes and shit."

Operation GHOST is a sequel to Ghost Squad. Only in arcades.

Edit: #1 on Stage 3. HOLLA.

Give Capndrake a couple hours and you'll be dethroned.

The later levels still don't have that many people on the leaderboards. I think I'm 3rd on the fetid waters, and my run wasn't even that good.

I'm also no longer 3rd on the train, I'm 8th now.

I hate all the small mistakes I do when I type and how it screws me over. I can never keep goregasm that long.

works for Gamestop (lol)
I think I still like Typing of the Dead 1 better than this. The game's pacing isn't as fast, though I think that's just Overkill's fault

My typing has gotten worse I think too :( Maybe cause I was streaming while I was playing lol

Thanks! Spamming tab adds like 15k to my score and now I get health packs too which saves me even more.

Finished playing through the game a while ago - the setting and scenes get to silly at times it's hard to believe this wasn't originally meant to be a TodD instead of a HotD, the silliness just feels perfect for the occasion, it's really only missing the characters carrying keyboards around.
It's even self-aware enough to making a feminist critique of itself in the ending, for heaven's sakes, as if the narration and dialogue throughout the game weren't making light of the whole thing.

I'll probably have to replay this soon enough to unlock stuff like the comic pages and artwork, since the Tab thing eluded me in the first few levels.

Speaking of "soon enough", releasing this right before naNoWriMo was a nice bonus.

I'm still not sure if I played the final boss battle right - the game uses a different system there (while the characters equip different (chain)guns), and it recognized some of the words I types for the topics it brough up, but I'm not sure if it was enough to type just anything and fast, with the relevant words counting more, or if the game only considered the relevant words you were expected to know from paying attention to the dialogues.

As for the future DL dictionaries, I hope they can be added to the current one, not just replace it completely - as it's stands it's filled with neat stuff ("hair suit" was a Bayonetta nod, I take it), and IMO not all of it should be replaced.
I wonder if the current lines will be compiled somewhere - maybe a HotD wiki?

Two of the options in that menu were "custom word ratio" (which I would presume to mean what mix of original and DLC do you want) and "preserve boss language" or somesuch. I think that's probably what you're after.

I'll admit, I insta-bought this as soon as I saw it crop up. I've never played HotD: Overkill, but I still pull out Typing of the Dead on the Dreamcast regularly.

It's so much fun. And I love the Grindhouse-vibe the game has, too. I feel like I'm playing variations of Robert Rodriguez's rejected ideas for Planet Terror sequels.

Can't be worse than me! I died like 5 times to the second level's boss...but I'll be completely honest here: I never learned how to properly type.

I'm kinda using this game as an excuse to force myself to learn, and it's...working? I still find myself hoverhanding over the keyboard and hunting/pecking while casually posting on message boards and whatnot, but I'm getting better every time I play. It's kind of hard for me to do some of the longer reaches with my pinky fingers (q,z and p,?) as I've crushed both of them before playing football and they've never quite healed right. But hey, progress is progress :)

"A Dashing Bold Adventure"

faith no more fans!?

p.s.

does anyone know how to get the health stuff or extras? i see it sitting there but no words to get them :(

just finished the first level. Games is hilariously dumb, the story is kinda great haha. More people should play this only over 2k on the leader board

Man, my typing has gone to shit since the DC days. Doesn't help that the phrases are constant non-sequitors that throw me in a loop ("Blue tits"; how am I supposed to respond to that?).

Only screenshot I remembered to take because I was messing around with Shadowplay too much. Completely brain farted getting a shot of 'BETTER CALL SAUL'

what is hardcore mode? i assume u unlock it after beating the game? does that mode require spaces and capitals or something?

You have to type spaces (unless that's just added on Motherfucker difficulty). Also, if you screw up a word, it resets and changes to a new one.

Capitals are never required from what I've seen so far.

I described this to my gf and waas having a difficult time explaining how there was this Dreamcast game and how you had to have the keyboard to play it. After a minute I just loaded up the Giant Bomb QL of the original. Long story short, I'm now a proud owner of Typing of The Dead. And it only cost me $8.00!

The original is definitely a better game for at least three reasons:

1) As Wario notes, the original is a much faster-paced game. This is Overkill's fault, because it was produced for home consoles rather than arcades. This is obvious in both the gameplay and the incredibly long cinematics.

2) The design in the original was much, much more varied and vibrant. Here the bosses are basically just a bunch of typing, like the rest of the levels. In the original each boss had a theme (the best is the boss that asks you philosophical questions and offers you multiple choices to respond to it). The original had segments where you stopped and fought onslaughts of zombies in a challenge type format. The challenges all had themes. Powerups reduced the difficulty in novel ways, where here there's just a slowdown.

3) The original had the characters wearing Dreamcasts and holding keyboards, which is so silly but so fun. This reflects that the original was developed by Sega as a retail product supporting a peripheral and their overall hardware vision, whereas this is a small project done by an indie team. I'm very glad that this project has a space to exist and I know the original is sort of a weird thing that could never happen again, but it is what it is.

But this is still a great game and if you have fond memories of the original and want to play a new Typing of the Dead, you definitely want this. $8 is an excellent launch price. Seriously, pick it up.

I hope Sega does release some interesting DLC dictionaries but more importantly opens up the dictionary format to modding. Given that leaderboards show people using UK and US English, I suspect the dictionaries are encrypted for leaderboard security purposes. Which is a bummer, because I'd love to work on cracking the format but if it's something that would ruin the competitive layer of the game that'd be really too bad.

You do not need to type spaces in either the original or this game (although you may find it helpful because you get a word that ends with a letter followed by another word that starts with the same letter and without using a space this could trip up your flow). You do need to type apostrophes and hyphens. You do not need to type capitals.

I slightly disagree.

The original is a better typing game. Typing of the Dead Overkill is a better game.

Obviously the original has more typing variety, but Overkill is a funnier game with better levels. I don't know if you can add the regular Overkill to the argument, but if you can, Overkill as a lightgun game is also a lot of fun.

edit:

I'm only a decent typist, but I'm having almost no trouble on the hardest difficulty. I haven't unlocked director's cut mode yet, but I feel like the difficulty of the original is totally not there.

I went ahead and picked this up. Fuck, such a brilliant game.

I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and I usually manage to rank somewhere between 100 and 150 on the leaderboards, the but the leaders are usually at least 60-70% higher score than I am, even though I have 99% accuracy and no deaths. How do you rack up such big scores?

I threw it on Motherfucker difficulty + Hardcore to try out the first level before I quit and you definitely had to type spaces. :shrug

Any way to turn the vsync off? If that's what it is, some bad mouselag in there, I'd rather have tearing.Especially since I'm gonna have me some Glovepie Wiimote co op action later on.

game messes with my usual typing rhythm waaay too much. The sections where I'm dealing with 3+ zombies are easy as, it's the 2 zombie sections that mess me up. Fun game though, we'll see how much better I can get at this.

holy shit I had no idea this was going to be a thing. I still remember playing the original TOTD, getting to a boss and having to type 'FART IN A BOTTLE'. I don't think I ever lost it that hard at a game before, needless to say I didn't beat the boss

edit: 8 bucks? bought, no further questions needed
