Typing of The Dead: Overkill (Steam, includes HOTD:Overkill)

In the original each boss had a theme (the best is the boss that asks you philosophical questions and offers you multiple choices to respond to it).

I always loved Strength boss, where you had to type long ridiculous sentences that, when put together, made a complete story:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO9WjL28TOs

"Surgically enhanced, he's very sexy." "That's without the nose he used to have." "And that old, drab personality." "Actually - wait. Is that even him?"

Or

"There's this cute guy at school." "I gave him my underwear." "I don't think he'll give it back." "I saw him wearing it yesterday."

:lol

"There once was an echidna from Vegas"
"Whose hairstyle was so outrageous."
"When asked by cops, why the dreadlocks?"
"He said the idea was Sega's"

The best one, though, was the boss who gave you a multiple choice quiz, and took a life whenever you answered wrong.

"What is best served cold?"
1: "Steak"
2: "Ice cream"
3: "Jailbait"

May I have a cookie?
The dictionaries built in to the game are encrypted as best as I can tell so I wouldn't expect user-made mods any time soon.
I hope there is some way to get around the encryption, even if it means offline play only for custom dictionaries. I really want to use TotD to practice typing in other languages, and assuming this is also getting a Japanese release, Unicode support should already be built in.

I'd like to make a crappy, text-only OT for the TotD series. Was anyone else planning on making one?
Shakespeare DLC sounds tempting!

GermanGAF tell me, does this game use the German keyboard layout or not?
Can't have z<->y typos all the time in this game

I'm currently at work while the Steam is still downloading it and I REALLY want to play this game after work.

EDIT: Also do you have to type spaces? Please tell me you do.

There are directories for all major EU regions (deutsch, espanol, france, italy) in the game folder, so I guess there's some sort of region support.

Spaces are not required, but increase your score.

What do you mean you get extra points for using spaces? Is that why sometimes I'll get, like, 225 instead of 200? I tried it out and it only seemed to give me a higher score some of the time.

I hope there is Æ, Ø, Å support also.

don't ask me for codes
After playing this, I'm dying for more typing games. What are some good ones besides the Typing of the Dead series?

There's Pokemon Typing Adventures (DS), but that only came out in Japan and Europe and might be a tad on the easy side :)

I think I still like Typing of the Dead 1 better than this. The game's pacing isn't as fast, though I think that's just Overkill's fault

Yeah... something about ToTD1 was quite a bit better. The gunshot noise, I know it's a small aspect, but it was way better there. There's also a lot of times when I'll kill all the monsters on screen (150wpm) and then the game just... waits. ToTD1 was better about this.

I'm happy to have gotten a new game and it's great that it has leaderboards, but this game is not as good as ToTD1. But hopefully this will spur the development of more typing-centric games, they're fun as hell.

Got late home last night so I only had the chance to download and play the first stage.

Liking it so far. The pacing is odd, but I understand. I don't think the difficulty scales like the dreamcast/pc one... right? The DC/PC one could get really nasty by the first boss fight is you didn't get hit at that point.

oh man, that guy was the best!
appreciate the impressions as well, expectations are properly adjusted. i really loved HOTTD overkill so as you said, most of the flaws sound inherent in that design (console) vs the obviously arcadey one prior used.

3) The original had the characters wearing Dreamcasts and holding keyboards, which is so silly but so fun. This reflects that the original was developed by Sega as a retail product supporting a peripheral and their overall hardware vision, whereas this is a small project done by an indie team. I'm very glad that this project has a space to exist and I know the original is sort of a weird thing that could never happen again, but it is what it is.

The best part about this, is actually the moments in the cutscenes where they would normally shoot zombies. In Typing of the Dead, they would hit a key on the keyboard and the zombie would just die. It always made me laugh.

Still, I love this new one. The strip club has some hilarious words, and I liked Jasper's boss text quite a bit. It's not quite strength, or the question one, but it's still great.

I'm trying to start it in windowed mode but it keeps crashing on me. Was fine the first try in fullscreen mode. Any ideas?

"I only manicured last week!"
"You manicure?"
"So what if I motherfucking do?! I still ain't putting my hands inside that thing. No finger-fucking-way!"

This game kinda runs like shit on my laptop, gets way too slow. Bleh.

How to add commentary while using shadowplay?

I wasn't using Shadowplay (though I plan to). Usually I use Open Broadcaster Software, but it had some really bizarre problems with ToTD (it wouldn't show the HUD, items disappeared) so I ran it through FRAPS.

I run the audio separate through Audacity, export it as a WAV, and then combine it with the video in Sony Vegas. This way, I can mix them appropriately while being able to run a compressor through Audacity.

Audacity is great because it's super simple and gets the job done. You can record commentary on top of the videos through OBS and FRAPS, but I prefer to be able to have control of the audio levels after I record footage.

Anyone else having problems getting the game to boot. The executable keeps getting deleted. I've disabled anti virus and firewall and yet it still gets deleted. I've clicked on it through the steam folder and as soon as I did, it vanished.

I know it's not the same game, but those who didn't know, House of the Dead: Overkill on iOS is on sale right now for 99 cents (it's $4.99 regularly). I had been checking it periodically for a price cut or drop, was happy to see it finally happen last night.

I have Windows 8.1 and this game is having some serious issues. I'm getting any sound effects and there is no dialogue during cinematics. I love the game, but I'm not happy with this.

I'm on windows 8.1 and not having that issue. check how many speakers your PC is set to have. it sounds like you might have it set to 5.1 when you're using stereo speakers.

Loved the Father Ted references in the strip club level.

There's Red Dwarf references too. Thank you UK devs!

I'm using a gaming laptop and the audio output is setup for stereo.

Holy shit. Since this is an Overkill title, does it follow suit thematically with the B-Grade/grindhouse/profane/over the top/nothing is sacred gloriousness that is HotD:Overkill on Wii? I love that game! Can you type stupid shit and profanity to kill zombies in this game?

Based Sega!

Every other time I launch the game, it errors because Steam says the app is already running. Clicking it again always worked though.

It is the same Overkill game, but with Typing gameplay and the Directors Cut stuff from the PS3 version. There's also the standard gunplay version included too.
As for typing profanity, there seems to be an upcoming DLC dictionary just for you. =P
