i actually have a music unlimited subscription (i got it for $10 last november and have little intention of renewing). last night, i tried to replicate my most current itunes playlist in music unlimited. about 20% of the songs were not on music unlimited... :(

so, it's not even an effective replacement if the subscription fee doesn't bother you. it's especially useless if you listen to music that is unsigned (local music, unofficially released remixes, your own created music).

That's exactly how the 360 was.

Not in the games I played. Like in San Andreas, on the original Xbox, it would make a radio station for the tracks/playlists on your hard drive. Not just mute/lower the game audio.

And in racing games, it would display the artist/track information in game instead of only when you press the guide button.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, or didn't play the right games, but on the original Xbox it was an in-game thing, and not an OS thing (because there wasn't an in-game OS).

if you guys are just going to make them focus on media features rather than game features, i'm going to be angry.

They're already focusing on media features like Music Unlimited. A simple mp3 player would've been a lot easier and quicker to implement rather than trying to shove a mediocre streaming service in everyone's face.

It's based on a faulty assumption that Apples old method of tightly integrating hardware and software also applies to software/services and data. Companies think the best way to make money is force you to spend it instead of making you want to spend it.

If music unlimited as half as user friendly as Itunes I could see where they would make that assumption. As it stands I would love to see the data they used to back up this decision.

Well yea the in game stuff was up to the developer to use. But every game on 360 at least muted just the music. That's what I thought you were talking about. It's always better as an OS level thing though because it doesn't require any extra developer (unless they want to do the extra stuff) work. It was silly the way it worked on ps3 because some games required you to navigate to the XMB and then others would give you an error message saying it didn't support the feature when the game clearly supoorted custom soundtracks using some in game setting on the start menu. The way it works on 360 and Vita is the way it should work on all platforms moving forward.

Hey OP, reckon you could add these two posts to the...OP...it's about DLNA...

Send you a PM with what I found out. I can screenshot if needed, don't know how this is normally handled since I never know anything :).

Mmm yeah. I wouldn't worry too much. Some of these overreactions are going to look hilarious in the near future.

Hopefully, this can now get patched in after launch.

Silly not to. Again, it's not something I use personally much or at all but it's handy sometimes and people do use it more than me so it's just backwards not to have it.

seems like something designed to push music unlimited subs, to which I say "eff that". You can't back up saves to USB drives either from what I understand, but I would not be surprised if both of these decisions were done to prevent the console from being hacked/jail broken.

This shit makes no sense what u tyoed there.

totally not trying to be offensive or anything, as i remember you being especially upset over lack of custom soundtracks, but did you end up cancelling your preorder? i'm wondering how much damage these omissions have done to people's purchase intentions.

personally, this is now my biggest gripe with the ps4. i use custom soundtracks a lot and i am pissed. i'm still keeping my preorder, but i'm going to continue yelling at sony until we can use our own music collections on ps4.

Edit: That text is specifically for MP3 playback (edit: and DLNA), here. Background music only through MU still reads the same.

Nothing they've said so far has been a commitment to eventually adding DLNA support. While I'm pretty confident it will eventually happen, there is still no excuse to not have it at launch.

I think at this point it's about your product not having a basic, simple, nil cost feature that your competition DOES have. Now you're letting Microsoft tick a box you can't check.
All in the name of pushing Music Unlimited subscription service that nary a single person asked for.

I understand what Sony's trying to do. If people can stream all their home music collections, why on earth would they be interested in Music Unlimited? (when they in fact already have, unlimited music they've spent years collecting). I have no doubt some big wig from entertainment division lobbied heavily against "piracy" and that included letting people use PS4 to play music and movies they downloaded to their PC. Everyone agreed it was a good idea to not allow this, then channel them through PS4 dashboard app into Sony's digital movie and music stores. Profit profit profit. yay, we can buy songs we already own for $2, and rent digital movies we've already seen (or decided we didn't want to pay to go see) for $9. Lucky us!

Most damaging tho, is Microsoft hasn't gone this route. So for people who use their consoles to stream, me being one of them, it's almost shocking. I'd flat out expected PS4 to offer at least what PS3 did.
So many people talk about how anti consumer Microsoft is/was/is and how down to earth and consumer friendly Sony is.. (and I love Sony). But this isn't very pro consumer.

Yes they added the feedback and future possibilities in the FAQ

I'm guessing you mean whatever was there was changed to

Sony Network Entertainment’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited will be available at launch in North America. We will announce other entertainment services that will be available on Day 1 before launch. Check PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation social channels for further news and updates.

If this is the new text then I suppose that's something at least. :)

i've been begging for over 5 years.
What was changed on the FAQ?

Will I be able to play MP3s on the PS4 system?
No.

Will the PS4 system support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?
The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.

Shu said nothing(he said something without actually saying anything). What would make you happy about that?

Well he can't commit to anything without talking to the team responsible for actually coding new features into firmware. This type of thing was likely on the list, but at a lower priority level, or it wasn't on there prior to yesterday. I find the latter hard to believe. So him saying that he spoke to the team about the issues and was encouraged by the meeting.. that's about as good as you can say it went. He can't promise a timeframe yet.

Some people do prefer an unlimited service instead of maintaining their own collection, and some people have collections that already limited to one ecosystem or another.

So a music service could be of value to some, including some posters who have piped up about it in this thread.

The problem is thinking we'll *all* be interested in it by cutting off any other choices. Its just not going to happen. All that does is piss off their previously happy customers and tarnish their brand with the arrogance brush again.

and the DLNA
Good catch - I missed that one.

I really don't understand the big fuss about MP3s. Who actually used this last gen? Also, I pretty sure there is a thing called a walkman if you want to listen to music.

Vita does this as well. Not sure if that's a system wide feature but I recall playing stuff in the music app and it muting the normal game music.

Yeah it's system wide by default for both MP3s and Music Unlimited but developers unfortunately have the opportunity to disable it to claim system resources just like networking features. After an ungodly amount of hours in P4G, I found out the hard way when I wanted to hear something else while dungeon grinding.

Which is why this was actually shocking, Vita has and custom soundtracks (party chat too but that's covered) on a mostly system level with your own music so you'd think everything was going to be on par for the PS4 since they acknowledged that people wanted those features.

What he said along side the changes to the FAQ are what made me happy that things are not entirely as they seem.

Did I explain myself enough for you?

Can I add voiceover to my Shared video?
You can’t add voiceovers to a shared video clip, but you can speak in real time when streaming live video.

I am not sure this is correct. On devkit firmware you can toggle on/off to allow commentary via mic input. Maybe it really is only for live streaming, but it doesn't say that.

Both consoles are being rushed out for the holidays. There are quite a few confirmed significant features on both that will not be available on launch.

Yep thats the way it was and why ive not used it this gen, it just plays over the game on 360 which fucking sucks.

It sounds like it means adding commentary to an already shared video. That would make sense but you never know.
