Media Create Sales: Week 44, 2013 (Oct 28 - Nov 03)

What are we looking forward to for this week s media create? Any big releases? I'm curious about the vita and Wiiu hold.

It's not an interesting week, the week after will be much more interesting, but I'm curious about WiiU as how well it holds will IMO set the tone for the rest of its year.

Yeah I don't know what to make of 3D World's number. Wasn't it just last week that people were saying Wii Party U was going to be a massive massive bomb due to the Comgnet? And it ended up doing 80k including bundles. Maybe that Comgnet chain isn't totally representative of the Wii U audience.

Well, most of Wii Party U sales were from the bundle, and bundles aren't included in Comgnet preorders. Still, its obvious that casual games aren't frontloaded neither are used to have high preorders. They just buy it when they feel like it xD

Mario games usually have pretty long legs too, if the numbers provided are correct, but the FW / LTD ratio is higher than the Wii brand, so it's a little worrysome. Even more when it's last entry was in a much higher position. I guess.

Nothing much, though there IS a MH4 3DS bundle (OG 3DS), which could provide a small bump for MH4 and 3DS, but nothing really interesting.

Wii Party U was at 74 pts just before its release. I don't know if comgnet was counting the bundles, but if we apply the same ratio for this week we would have around 12K sales if we take MC last week sales as reference, or around 25K if we go with Famitsu numbers.

I'm not sure my "logic" works here, if someone can correct me...

Your logic would be right if Comgnet were the only stores in Japan, but they aren't. While there is a general correlation, it isn't 100% of the time.

Take MH4 for instance.

Week 43: Comg. 87pt
Week 44: Comg 118pt

Sales increased there, but what about nationwide?

Week 43: Famitsu 60k
Week 44: Famitsu 47k

Sales decreased.

Comgnet weekly sales points aren't useful. Of course, if a game has 10000pt, then we can assume it sold well, but how well it is basically impossible to infer.

Are pre order sales competitive in Japan? Like are certain stores more popular than others? I take it online orders are less prevalent?

What I don't get is why retailers are ordering so many copies of Wii U software. If the sell throught rate is consistently very low, why do they keep making the same mistake?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
You don't want to see them, believe me.
Tomorrow, I'll post the comparison. Still, you don't want to see them

And now it's that time

Regarding SM3DW, I think it can do 2x Pikmin 3 FW numbers, regardless of other factors.

you are mixing preorder pts (M#DW) with release week pts (WPU)

Not all software fail at sell through. Nintendo games, with a few exceptions (like Rayman and W101) tend to sell their shipments, so, it's fair to assume that the retailers though Party is going to sell well in the end.

But for other games i have no idea. Specially western games. Most of them don't even chart.

as for Pikmin3, the worst thing for Nintendo is not being able to repeat the good software sales they were able to achieve on the GC
If Zelda had (some partial) excuse, Mario will be the prove of it, selling tons less than Sunshine (despite it being more exposed after the Wii-DS era, despite it being - I think - better than Sunshine and so on)

The WiiU is going to be toxic to many IPs.

I get that, but they can always order more copies if required. As far as I'm aware Japan doesn't offer the same guarantees as the west where if a title underperforms relative to shipment, the retailers get compensated. In Japan they have to eat the loss, so by nature I'd expect them to be more conservative. It's not like Pokemon or Monster Hunter where they know they'll sell every copy they get and not ordering more copies would mean less sales. Thay can always order more

I could understand it earlier on in the Wii U's life when they thought the software would perform better. But after seeing the results I figured they'd be more careful.

Eh regardless how bad it does in comparison to other games in the series I highly doubt that would occur. The brand and how close it is to Christmas should push it over even if it's not preordered a whole lot on one chain of stores.

Yes, it is strange. Sometimes you see news of an undershipped game, like Animal Crossing new leaf. I guess they try to avoid that kind of thing. The last wii party sold pretty well, after all.

Also, some companies may force retailers to order more shipments. It may happen.

I'll just have to wait for it to be released. It seems too crazy for it to be that low. Unless Pikmin is bigger than Mario now.

Six months of drought and no advertising fucked up the Wii U more than Nintendo realized. That decision is biting Iwata and the other people who made it right in the ass.

If Mario 3D World doesn't open with the largest first week sales that the Wii U has seen, I'll spend four straight hours scratching my head and looking puzzled.

I've no idea what's going on with the comgnet numbers. Is someone else offering a really cool pre-order incentive?

I agree . Nintendo released the Wii U with 3 games and the next 6 months where almost a complete drought .

The Wii U slowly Disappeared out of the media with no announcements and out of the people's minds.

Only the Nintendo Hardcore are left now .

I forgot Zelda, but Game and Wario probably already sold their shipments, right? I don't remember the first week sellthrough, but last time we saw on famitsu, it was already at 3 times its first week.

Better scratch up your heads now.

But i'm seriously cheering for Mario to have the best first week ever, just to see people stop putting so much faith on comgnet numbers.

No marketing / bad marketing maybe. I don't know but I haven't seen a WiiU commercial for almost three months. I honestly think that the majority of potential buyers still don't know that this console exists.
We should stop that excuse too. Mario 3D is being marketed as all hell not only in Japan (where the bundles where also very marketed) but on other places. If the title does bad, it will be because people are not interested.

So Mario 3D World might not break 50k first week? I wonder what the hell Nintendo is going to think if this big holiday game flops on Wii U, not only in Japan but worldwide.

There's absolutely no way it doesn't break 50k FW, even 100k should be fine.

Wow. Iwata has aged. Poor guy. :(

Yeah comparing points doesn't usually give you a good idea of what to expect, but I would say overal it's a indicator of a game is underperforming or not. For example when XIII-2 closed at less than half XIII points, people knew it was going to underperform heavily, and indeed XIII-2 opened at less than half XIII FW.

Comg is not perfect, but it's definitely a way more better indicator than Amazon at least. Preorders for 3Dland haven't closed yet too, we will see at what number it's going to close.

Did not know Kid Icarus opened that well.

Anyway, it's too early to bury 3D Mario World. We haven't seen the whole picture yet.
Maybe get the shovels ready though, just in case.

It's a clone. If the first Iwata fails another one is coming to replace him. The nintendo-circle of doom.
That's the reason why WiiU is failing at the moment. First Iwata got fired (or kept inprisoned) after abandoning the Wii in 2011. New Iwata doesn't know anything about marketing and elaborate strategies. Likewise his fate is sealed but we don't know when Iwata³ will replace him.

Any indication about how Vita TV will do?
We have literally no idea. All that's known is that it sold out very quickly at Amazon, but that could be because not many units were available.

There's really nothing one can say about it until it launches. It's just one huge question mark.

So is november 21st the day of the flops?

I mean, Super Mario 3D World, Lightning Returns, One Piece: Unlimited Red...

These games will sell less than people expect (maybe expected for LR).

Man am a little sad with how low the Danball Senki Wars numbers are. Since the game is pretty good.

There is just no way 3D World doesn't have at least a 100k opening. I'm serious here when I say Nintendo should just give up at that point on the Wii U in Japan. That's would just be indicative that nearly all Wii U owners have forgotten they own the system. It would also be extremely sad for a game that had so much effort put in to pull those kind of numbers.

New Super Mario Bros. U had an opening of 170,563. I expect that to be the upper boundary for first-week Super Mario 3D World sales.

Right I was not expecting better than 150k, but opening less than Pikmin 3 would completely astound me. That would indicate the active userbase is actually shrinking.
