GameInformer Cover reveals Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor(PC/PS3/360/X1/PS4)/Monolith

The broken sword looks an awful lot like Narsil, which probably means that at some point in the game, this dude will be tasked with delivering it to Rivendell for protection and for when Aragorn decides to accept his destiny.

....which makes completely zero fucking sense from a canon perspective, but hey, gotta try to make an Aragorn cameo happen somehow!

For comparison's sake:

It's too similar for there to be a coincidence.
Here is why I'm 99.9% sure it's NOT Narsil. WB owns the LOTR license and thus the imagery from the movies. If it were meant to be Narsil it would have been drawn exactly as Narsil. The pommel, hilt, blade grooves and angle of break on the sword he is holding are all different from Narsil.

Deets please!

  • Surprised at Nintendo's willingness to shake up Zelda formulas
  • Loved the item rental/purchase system; makes it genuinely scary when you're about to die
  • Heart piece puzzles are still clever despite having access to all the items whenever you want
  • No more map items to grab in dungeons, layout is shown right away; doesn't dumb down the experience
  • Seemed to really love the turning-Link-into-a-drawing mechanic; says it forces you to look at the entire game from a different point of view instead of just solving puzzles and moving on
  • "As if some of the best dungeons in Zelda history weren't enough, they typically end with some of the best bosses Link has ever encountered"
  • Some bosses return from LttP, most are brand new
  • Completely free to do dungeons in whatever order, no number system or NPCs that tell you where to go next
  • Freeing to wander the map and explore at your leisure
  • World map laid out in same manner as LttP, but not copy-paste job; lots of tweaks to aid traversal and exploration
  • "I wouldn't change anything about this game"

Edit: oh yeah 10/10

It's neogaf. First we have to get super hype for the game THEN we shit all over it when it is released UNLESS it was made by Naughty Dog.

Get with the crowd bro.

I really hope this game is good. LoTR has been a completely wasted IP in the video game realm. Everything released thus far has been sub-par. Hope this is the exception I have been waiting for.

I don't know what most of you are so down on. The concept alone is enough to at least be intrigued. I'm reading the cover article now but I'm at least willing to see more.

Yeah, as mentioned before--there's so much lore that could be being used by the video game makers, but I guess that lore is off-limits because Tolkien's family owns the books, so we're stuck with nonsense like this?

I mean: Do you know what kind of insanity you could get from the Beren/Luthien story? Or Turin Turambar? The entire First Age is rife with potential for bad-ass fantasy action games of the elves and humans' early battles against the TRUE Dark Lord of Middle Earth, and they're going to waste because apparently the movies and the books are two different things. >_<

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Aside from those who confused this for MonolithSoft I thought everyone knew Monolith would be making LotR games after WB consolidated them with Snowblind.

For some reason, I read Obsidian instead of Monolith and was intrigued, albeit cautiously. Not that this team couldn't handle it, though. It's too bad that, outside the MMO, the LotR IP has had a history of mediocrity in gaming. Wish everyone didn't feel so compelled to address the pre-trilogy/trilogy time period and actually branched out into the older storylines.

This sounds so absurdly awesome that I refuse to let myself get hyped up for it. A mordor-set open world action RPG? My fucking dick.

Another promising concept that will undoubtedly be held back by the never ending Gen 7.

Cut the cord already. For fucks sake.

does anyone know if MONOLITH is still using their inhouse tech LITHTECH?

I used to get excited with each game progressing it. It seemed like a viable alternative to UNREAL back in the day. Since F.E.A.R. 2 I haven't really heard anything of it anymore.

SHOGO and BLOOD 2 were the first ones in 1998, NOLF felt like a refined first LITHTECH in 2000.
Then NOLF2 and TRON 2.0 came in 2002/2003 and then F.E.A.R. in 2004.

The worst one was The Beatles Rock Band. Worst COVER STORY EVER. It's a MUSIC GAME. YOU PLAY MUSIC WITH THE MUSIC TOYS THAT IS ALL.

The living members and/or relatives of The Beatles being involved in a project like that was huge news. That alone warranted the cover story.

Just got done reading the story, it seems really amazing on paper but a lot of games do. It looks like there's a lot of ambition behind this and a drive to do something truly new so they've got a lot on their plate to pull off.
