PS4 Hardware Review Thread

So the general negative points are...

- No MP3/DLNA/downloaded videos support
- Game line-up is underwhelming
- PS4 OS could be a bit better when it comes to the organization of your digitally downloaded games

Meh, I can live with these points. Generally because I rarely play MP3s on my PS3.

Game line-up, for me, is great. I mean, come on, Battlefield 4 (for the first time 64-person multiplayer), FIFA 14 in 1080p, AC4: Black Flag. We've got some huge triple A titles here.

When it comes to the idea of exclusives being the sellers, the big sellers are going to be BF4, COD, Fifa, Need for Speed and maybe AC4. Franchises that people know and that generally sells very well. COD alone will outsell every game by a mile.

Killzone and Dead Rising will probably do fairly well but nothing amazing outside of bundles.

And I don't see the likes of Knack or Ryse sales being anything beyond ok at best. If anything, I think those two games will end up being those games everyone forgets about after the initial release.

I'm holding off on buying any next gen console till closer to March since I have a PC that can run multi platform games with high visuals anyway.

If you're going to be an early adopter, don't expect those consoles to have stellar line ups right out the gate. They'll both have interesting games but most will be forgotten within a few months.

The big sellers for these next gens at launch will be the multiplatform games, no doubt.

And don't expect a price drop for a long, long time.

Oh no, Knack and Ryse will be used in the console wars to come. Just like Sixaxis-focused games like Lair, Wii Whatever and Kinect games.

But you have a great point. When you get a console at launch, your game selection will eventually pale in a years time. I didn't end up loving my PS4 until a little bit under a half a year later. Same thing with my Xbox 360.

These are all appetizers. I'm waiting for my fucking Gundam game.

The sharing functions also work out of the box, with the ability to share video over Facebook, exactly as revealed at the initial PlayStation Meeting back in February. A quick look at the PS4's hard drive reveals that 15 minutes of Call of Duty footage occupies 567MB. Initially we assumed that PS4's hardware encoder generates 720p30 video at 5mbps, yet a similar amount of Battlefield 4 action weighed in at a much meatier 915MB. What is rather unfortunate is that Facebook is the only option for sharing video clips right now - for reasons unknown, Sony doesn't allow you to copy the footage off onto a USB drive where the user could do a lot more with it, like upload to YouTube for example. Similarly, screenshots can't be exported either - they need to be shared via Facebook or Twitter. What is useful is the way in which the share button can be customised - standard mode sees a short button press being up the share menu, while a long press takes a screenshot. The 'easy screenshot' mode reverses that, while in both modes, a double-tap of the share button sets the start point for a video clip.

Sony please ...

720p30 and You cant even export it in other way than into facebook?
Also You can export screenshots ... and dunno why DF hasnt mentioned what quality are those shots.

Polygon's video review sums it all up.

"Right now, this is a game console without a game to recommend it."

Depends on what you want. In a year, is the console price going down? No, and I have the money now. I want to play BF4 and Assassin's Creed on my console and I want the best console experience for those games.

The way Kotaku reviews is so much better than putting a score on the end. "Not yet", two words that tells you all you need to know, and two words I could not agree more with. In 2-3 years with a decent backlog and a price drop the PS4 will be a worthwhile pickup.

Imagine a world where everyone only buy devices 2-3 years into its lifespan.

I would have enjoyed more an updated version of:

Heck, even Nintendo should have released a "Wii U loves you" today.

I was there that night. Turned a dull launch party into a funny night each time they passed.

I can comfortably predict that polygon is gonna give XB1 a 10 and praise the hell out of it. Saying things Like the games are great and look fantastic. This is true next gen experience even though most games are 720p, it's about games not graphics. TV has never been so much better.

Nostradamus Has spoken.

Anyone else on the Controller battery life? Can't be arsed to read 10 reviews of the same thing. Polygon says 8 hours, compared to 30 on DS3. I'm hoping they're mistaken.

What I don't get about the Polygon review is how they mention that they have no clue what games will be around the corner in Summer/Spring.

Because we aren't aware of Ground Zeroes, Destiny, and Watch_Dogs. Unless they mean 1st party games. They didn't specify that and even mentioned AC4.

Jeff Gerstmann put some thoughts on twitter. I don't think he will do a hardware review though

@jeffgerstmann: I was surprised to see how clunky the patch download/install process was on PS4. Reminds me of the Vita. The rest of it is pretty elegant.

@jeffgerstmann: It still does that PS3 thing where if you accept friend requests really quickly you can catch the same one twice, causing an error msg.

So it's a good console with a shitty game lineup. Sort of disappointing but this might push me to wait for the first price drop in 2 years.

CVG released their review,
This past generation has dragged on too long. Though there were still standout moments, many proven ideas became too relied upon, while graphics hit a ceiling. The PlayStation 4 is a long-overdue leap forward for Sony, but it doesn't take any risks. Sharing features might change how players approach playing and watching games, but it doesn't change the central experience.

The controller will make playing them more comfortable, but it too is merely an advancement on an a controller blueprint that was etched in the mid-nineties.

Fears that console gaming would buck and bend to the whims of the fickle casual market have proven false - this system is absolutely built for core gamers. And yet, for those expecting to see something that definitively turns a corner, you won't find it here just yet.

There's a good chance that the software platform will allow for greater innovations in the future, such as more streaming options expected to be added later down the line, but for now, Sony is selling a futuristic machine with not many new things to do on it.

Hardware reviews for system launches that are complaining about the lack of great software?

And someone is actually complaining about PSN sub and the 'optional' camera costs?

So what's the scoring actually based on? I mean, there's even nothing that can set the standards.

What would console have to do to get a 10 right of the bat?

Polygon basically praised all the critical aspects of PS4, but still ended up giving it a 7,5. How does this work?

How did this generation do in comparison?

How much did Oyua score?

What are this?

He probably got the information from PlayStation Norway (Nordisk Film/Trigger). They do (sometimes) send out press releases in advance with embargoes.

This is correct.

This is one of the strictest embargoes i have received from Sony. Im not even allowed to tell the embargo date lifting.

I share my sentiments with kotaku. Great potential but the day one offerings are kind of bleh (Got Knack and FIFA 14). But I got a gaming PC so console only gamers have lots to look forward to day one.

So if there are no problems like overheating, noise, crappy os, It's a very good console.

Seems like these rviews will all probably say, "Wait! Don't purchase this yet", but I'm really looking for actual pros/cons. Not waiting is obvious for the average consumer.

CVG released their review,

I'm sorry but this generation hasn't overstayed its welcome by one day. The last year especially was filled with many moments in which I was glad I'm a gamer. This break from the status quo issn't inherently bad, it is what it is: a break from the status quo.

Wish more members of the enthusiast press shared this perspective.

Why not just review the actual hardware, the UI, and the subscription services provided?

If you use launch lineup as a negative (or even a positive) in a review score it's pretty disingenuous since it may not be representative of the 1st party output in the long-run. The 3DS' launch lineup (of exclusives) was abysmal but now I'm in love with it. And the Vita's launch lineup was great but right now there are very few 1st party exclusives coming out.

What could they do to you? Kill you? Come on, tell us what it is! It's only us GAF, we won't tell anyone.

How do you really review a console with a score? Odd.
When there's a will, there's a way. It's a very stupid will, however.

It'll be interesting to see how XBO fares, especially if its exclusives fare similarly to PS4s.

Hope Crimson Dragon and even Killer Instinct do well, personally.

Does it play Sony 1st party games and run multiplatform stuff well? Buy.

Assigning scores to hardware at launch these days seems ridiculous to me. No matter what, early adopters are buying a system on promise of what's to come.

I think it's a case of a lot of us judging a console by exclusives out the gate when the real meat will always be 3rd party.

I know someone whose your average gamer. Not in the hardcore, looks up every nugget of info that we all are here. Just someone who buys a few games a year which is more the norm. I can safely recommend him the PS4 since I know he'll want to play Fifa 14, COD and BF4. I doubt he even knows a thing about Knack or cares.

There's little discussion on how important 3rd party actually is. BF4 for example, is going to be way better on next gen than it is current. Anyone with a PS3 or 360 won't get the same quality experience.

Anyway, I think from March onwards is when we'll see both machines really rev up. Till then, typical early adoption rules.
