PS4 Software Update 1.5 is now up for download

I don't think there will be anything wrong with the servers on launch day but it doesn't hurt to download as a backup.

Same, just downloaded the update in about a minute now as a Plan B for Friday. I don't anticipate a problem with the update on PSN but better safe than weeping fury at 1230 AM Friday. ;)

EDIT: just because it's there downloaded what appears to be the 859MB full install PUP as well, about 4 minutes. *Really* hope I don't need that file for anything any time soon lol.

Any way to know if these are legit files? kinda skeptical about the link.

So we will need to put the fw on USB if we swap hard drives thats bull
That would be my guess, but I could be wrong. The way it works on the PS3 is the basic functions of the system like boot and fw updating reside on the on board flash while everything else is just dumped on the HDD. So when you install a new HDD on most PS3's (launch units don't do it this way), you need the fw file to restore the OS files onto the HDD.

The fact that the PS4 software update server has two files makes me think the system will work in a similar matter. Software updates for people who just need to update, recovery file for people who need to do a fresh install on a new hdd.

Updated OP with the official instructions from ps.com.

They're still using the old folder format, remember to capitalize the folder name and to type it exactly the same way.

No word yet on what the recovery file is for. Gonna look for the HDD replacement manual to see if the recovery file is mentioned.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. I always thought swapping the HDD will automatically format the new disk and install the OS.
I'm kind of glad that the PS4 launches in the US first so by the time I get my PS4 there will already be fool proof guides available.

I'm saying I believe the OS is partially stored on the HDD. And if that's correct, a HDD swap would require you to do a full OS install on the new HDD.

Since the Recovery File is 800MB and the Software Update is only 300MB, I'm guessing the recovery file is a copy of the full OS and will be required when installing a new HDD.

We should know in a day or two, when they finish updating the PS4 knowledge base, what files you'll need for a HDD upgrade.

That's really good of them to have it up way beforehand. Let the more hardcore download it ahead of time to relieve some of the stress from the servers.

I downloaded the 800 MB file just in case. Thanks for the heads up! :)

I actually do wonder what will happen when 3 million PS4 all try to connect to PSN on the same day and download an update. Sounds like an unintentional DDoS attack in the making.

I downloaded the update, just to be sure for Friday.

Firmware download speed has nothing to do with PSN.

Sony's using Akamai as a CDN to serve the updates. The update traffic on Friday will never touch their servers. It's the right way to serve this volume of data as it guarantees that everyone will get it from an Akamai server close to them.

Hopefully they're using Akamai for more than just downloads and serve things like the PSN social stuff through it as well.

dus01.ps4.update.playstation.net canonical name = al02.cdn.update.playstation.net.
al02.cdn.update.playstation.net canonical name = a01.cdn.update.playstation.org.edgesuite.net.
a01.cdn.update.playstation.org.edgesuite.net canonical name = playstation.sony.akadns.net.
playstation.sony.akadns.net canonical name = a192.d.akamai.net.

did sony use akamai before? They used to use Amazon CDN before.

My PS3 downloads at great speeds. I'm confident my PS4 will follow suit.

people dont get that they use CDN for downloads, so those several hundred thousand firmware updates in 2 days will be miniscule part of Akamai CDN.

Now new PS4 has new PSN infrastructure for everything else, and thats another story. Downloads should be not a problem at all though.

I was about to ask if the folder format was the same as the PS3. Glad it is. No need to worry about network issues now then.

So when I first switch on the PS4 for the first time ever should I go through the preliminary setup like country, time, regions etc or run this update before doing anything else by holding down the power button etc first?

A good question.

Hopefully Sony helps out the people replacing HDDs on day one. I downloaded both files just in case, but I'd like to know for sure which one I should use.

Just want to share that I did my HDD swap with a 1TB SSHD earlier today. Initialization/formatting with the 800MB+ recovery file took less than 8 minutes.

EDIT:

I did mine without ever turning on my PS4 first. Just swapped and went straight into safe mode. Works perfectly.

If anyone cares, it appears the md5 hash of the file is in the download URL. i got this for the first (update) file:

MD5(PS4UPDATE.PUP)= df008b5601f4a214a3cc65030a02ac4a

If you're paranoid, you might want to verify your download. On OS X or any other *nix, you can run in a terminal:

openssl md5 PS4UPDATE.PUP

On Windows, there are many freeware utilities that can do MD5 hashes.

That page links to the instructions on how to update the PS4, not how to install the recovery file onto a new hard drive. It also links to the 300 meg update file, not the recovery file you linked to in the OP.

Is it the same process?
There's two pages and the files have identical names, but that second link links to the 800MB file.

So, which one do we want? The 859MB one, or the 308MB one?

Which one did Hi11Zones use?
859MB if you're upgrading the HDD when you get your console, 308MB if you're just updating the software on the stock HDD.

There's more than one? The official playstation website link took me to a download of the 308mb one. Where can I find the 859mb version?
I got links in the OP.

us.ps.com links to both of the files, but you can miss it easily cause both pages use similar instructions.
