The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

I finally started this game after having it for two weeks and I cannot believe how good and fun it is. If I never enjoy another game for the Wii U I will still feel like my purchase of the system was justified because of this game.

Despite hating the demo, I bought this since there was nothing else I wanted to play at the moment..

I'm not good at it any way, i don't feel 100% comfortable in a fight unlike VJ, Bayonetta or DMC...but the game has grown on me. It's style, presentation and whimsical setting just invite you in.
I just wish I could get a grasp of battles more, plus i just lose sense of what's going on when everything degrades into a melee of hundreds of bodies.

You could go and play some Wonderful Missions to not have to "waste" story missions on getting the feel for it maybe?

Yo.

This game is fucking awesome. I cant even get past the Prologue because I keep pausing, soaking it all in and smiling so much.

Then restarting.

This is the kind of game where you wanna wake up early every Saturday morning, make a big ass bowl of cereal like you were 9 all over again, and then watch cartoons for two hours before going outside for the rest of the day.

Also, Viewtiful 101 seems so much more fitting =)

I think that after beating this like 20 times now I'm starting to take W101 for granted, but yeah, it's literally like still one of the best fucking games ever made.

Oh, what I'd give to be back there again, not knowing what's ahead.

It only gets better too. Enjoy :D

This game is going to be awesome on my second play through. First time through, I'm enjoying the crazy but it's not quite clicked like the other Platinum games.

It doesn't do a very good job of explaining some of its systems (which I'm now starting to "get" around mission 6) and some parts are poorly designed/buggy - the hanglider bits are terrible, and I've had a couple of times where the game has got caught in a loop spawning me into mid air after dying leading to another insta-death. Some bad camera placement at points too - there was a bit with a revolving corridor that nearly made me puke.

I love the overall vibe though and I think the skill ceiling is probably very high meaning it's built for repeated playthroughs. Gaf has been going on about how much content there is so have very high hopes!

So, would this gif be considered to be too much of a spoiler?

A little bit, yeah. Maybe don't show in thread.

So am I the only one finding it weird that the OST hasn't popped up anywhere in full?? This is an insanely good soundtrack! My new favorite track is actually Immorta's Theme - a smooth jazzy groove version of the main theme!
If you have your sound test on your file it's on the third page called "EV19 Immorta's Theme"

It's almost been a daily ritual to play a chapter every night. I'm on operation 006 on my second play through and definitely will be back for a third :D

edit: does anybody have that cheat-sheet handy for this game? Somebody had made a really good image that outlines all the basics. I can't find it!

How do I get that Hero Heart piece on top of the burning building in Mission 01?

I got to the spot where the building is but I cant get up there. Is it something that Ill have access to later?

After the part with the giant football helmet, going to the right leads to a scorpion and the end of the stage. Go to the left instead, make a bridge and you'll get to the burning buildings. Have a Fist morph out because it's immune to fire and use the Unite Rising skill (the flying uppercut move) to get high enough. Some people have had some luck with Rocket though.

I wouldn't worry about getting collectibles on your first run.

There's alot of hammer spots in the first 2 stages that you need to come back for after getting Yellow anyways

Same with Pink, White and Black crates

Havent tried off tv play yet but apcan anyone tell me how it is? Im afraid itll be way too small
It's actually nicely done and there's less lag than on my TV so the timing for Ukemi is easier to get. If you don't have visual problems on your screen it should be the same on the gamepad's screen.

Well I made it to Operation 2-B last night. Playing on Normal.

It's really been quite a learning experience so far and Im loving every minute. Already have bought and equipped the Energy Converter and Unite Charge. I love saving up the carrots, peppers and eggplants for that credit card!

I went back to the Prologue too and got the Platinum trophy for it! The feels when you get that high rank...

Made it to Operation 003 last night! The 2C boss was the first one that really kicked my ass. I died three times unfortunately. The part leading up to it, when you're in the ship controlling it with the red panels on the floor threw my mind off in such a cool way. The whole time I was like "Whaaaaaat the fuck am I doing THIS IS AWESOME"

I picked up the Ukemi add on with the credit card, but then I realized that I didnt have three custom slots yet. I still only have two and theyre being used for the Converter and Unite Charge (which is great). Right now I have enough cash to get the Unite Tent which I hear is pretty damn useful. Gotta wait til after 3A though.

This is the first game in awhile that makes me super pumped to visit the shop. Like, re4 super pumped when you see the merchant.

So, I just got my Wii U yesterday, W101 comes in today. In the meantime, I downloaded the demo. There was one glaring issue: massive framerate issues. Any time there was a significant amount of action, it would slow down to a near slideshow. This has to be something with the demo, right?

Also, yeah, this game is pretty difficult to get a grasp of. It's not so much the controls as it is the presentation, it takes some getting used to the fact that your group of characters is essentially one character. It's often really hard to see enemy attacks or know what's going on. I think it's totally learnable though.

Man, that first fight with the robo turtles completely kicked my ass. What is the best way to take them down? Took way longer than expected. There's gotta be something more than strictly using the hammer....

When you're up close to them, they'll sometimes try to stomp you with just one leg. If you keep the Hammer out in neutral, or use Unite Guts to block, you'll unbalance them. Then use any attack that doesn't hit downward (pretty much just Tombstone and the Hammer basic attack) and you'll flip the turtle over.

Well I just took out one of two at the end of 3A and the first one went down quicker than that first battle. (That learning experience!). Smashed until I could see the red underneath the shell and then just went full assault with the unite group attacks with the Belmont alloy whip or fists.(whatever the drawing + X attack is).

That works too. Hell, it's what I tend to do. Make a big Hammer, try to get them both to half health if possible, then Climb Attack and wail.

Reposting my turtle strategies from earlier.

Form Hammer and run around to the outside edge of one of the turtle's front legs. You don't want to stand between them, but to the side of one of them. Get some swings in and watch for when it tries to stomp you with one leg and then Guts (you can't Guts the two leg one). This'll knock it off balance so go Fist and go all in on the stomach with punches and team unites. Don't use Hammer or you'll knock it back on its feet. Pummel it enough and it'll fall on its back. Attack the ever loving hell out of it because it takes more damage this way and the Hammer really shows off its damage potential.

The only thing you need to worry about is the other turtle which is why we attacked the first one from the outside instead of running between them. The other turtle will do one of two attacks while you're knocking the other off balance: bites and fire pillar. While you're attacking the off-balance turtle just watch the second one. If it bites, spring away and then run back in to attack the off balance one, but the reason to use Fist is because if the turtle does fire pillar it'll just make your punches even stronger since Fist is immune to fire so you're only watching for the bite tell.

Essentially the process goes Guts a stomp, go Fist and attack while watching for the other turtle to bite, go crazy out when it falls on its back. You should be able to kill the first one before it can right itself. The process gets even faster when you learn Wonderful Cyclone and get the Unite Charge custom block.

Not sure if this was ever made, but I present to you all this:
Zi9Xx5c.gif

Use it well.

This generally works but when the turtles are close together, the other one will do the un-gutsable head attack constantly which does MASSIVE DAMAGE.

Which is why I said "spring away" and not "guts" the bite which is the only attack you need to keep an eye out for.

If you're on the outer edge of the two as I said, the bite barely reaches and if it does it's active time is extremely limited. In fact it puts the head in range to get hit by hammer swings while you're focusing on the main one.

Game came in yesterday. The presentation is absolutely supurb, and the game is, as expected, one non-stop climax of action.

However, I'm definitely struggling with the game's mechanics, which I knew would happen, but I'm adamant to see it to the end. It's a tad depressing since one of my favorite things about platinum games is the amazing flow of action. So far (I'm being incredibly understanding here), none of the actions seem intuitive, but I'll admit that it probably just hasn't clicked yet. Do you guys have a beginner's guide, tips and tricks, or perhaps an idea of which store items are good to shoot for first? I already picked up the fast liner. I just got Wonder Pink.

Watching Saur's Youtube videos really helped me. Stick with it, eventually everything will feel natural and fluid. Also keep in mind that my eight year old son can pull off all the morphs no problem. I'm sure that will make you feel better.

Pulling off the morphs is easy, it's just that it's a pretty weird mechanic to begin with.

Also is this game supposed to be 60fps? I keep getting massive slowdown.

On hard and above you have to fight a lot of turtles in tight spaces and they can most definitely reach you.

Which is why I, again, said "spring away" when it tries to bite.

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with me on. I'm not saying "stand there and mash A", I'm saying that with proper positioning the bite is the only attack you have to watch for.

After playing through the shooter sections on 101% I'm now on team no starfox

Converted one of the Space Harrier section's only defenders in Bayo.

I like the core game alot but the more I play it the more I wish so many crappy sections just weren't in the game at all. or at least they didn't scale so hard with difficulty.

How does that auto-heal custom thing work? It says it heals me on every successful unite morph, am I doing something wrong?

I think that one is heals on every successful unite guts. Not morph.

Also you fell for a noob trap. If you want crazy broken healing get energy converter

Took a breather break last night and didnt play. Hopefully I can jump back in tonight.

I get the feeling that this is definitely the type of action game where if you stop and let it go for a month or so, once you get back to it you're gonna get your ass handed to you almost instantly. It's one of the reasons I feel so compelled to finish it as soon as I can (though 3D World coming out tomorrow is a bit of a roadblock).

I didn't even bother with 101% mode. Shit was hella tedious

I kinda hope in his next game kamiya doesn't straight up lift the difficulty level ideas from bayo again. The new restrictions in 101% and the ranking system as a whole don't work as well here as they do in bayo.

That's about my only complaint with the game. the core is really fun but it literally drowns in all these ideas for other games (starfox) and from other games. The lack of focus in its design keeps me personally from putting it on the level of vj or bayo.

I like it a lot but I think I can safely say now that I don't love it. Still my favorite single player game of the year though, and probably my favorite pg game after bayo.

Tldr it's no bayonetta but it sure as hell isn't a metal gear rising
