Is The Wonderful 101 the most voluminous and varied action game ever? I said WOW!

You start with Glider, its not an ability that you can unlock.
You can upgrade it however.

If you are in operation 002 then you have had to use Glider cause Mission 001B forces you to use it at one point.

I couldn't tell if he meant operation 02 or 01B

but I assumed the latter as the glider sections are pretty self evident.

If there's a cannon in the background and got Green, you need to draw a bridge.

but I still might be confused.

I can take a screenshot when I get home.

It's the first portion of the second main mission or operation or whatever. It's the first mission after beating that two headed dragon boss thing.

I thought it was the building that introduced the UFO's at first too, but then I re-read and it say operation 2. Either way we will just wait for the screenshot :V

Yes, it's the building with the little UFOs you can fly, but I'm evidently not supposed to use them to fly to the next building because they forcibly crash when I try to use them for that, and they permanently go away after using them a few times. I've tried to build bridges several times.

I'm exclusively playing on the pad, so I don't know if I'm missing some cue that would normally be displayed on the big screen or vice versa.

I played the whole game on the gamepad, the game will always flash the gamepad on the bottom left corner if the second screen is vital to continue, and that can't be the building we were thinking off since that's before the first boss battle.

Operation 002A also has the little ufos right at the start of the level if I recall correctly.

After Mission 3 on 002A you have to create a bridge to get to the other side. After that I think you have to use glide.

Either way we will just wait for the screenshot to know the specific place.

Since it's in Operation 002-A and where the UFOs are (and also near one of the Gatcha machines?) I'm guessing it's the part at beginning of the stage where you need to use Unite Glider. And he said it's (right after) the first mission too.

Was P-Star prompting you to make the glider? Usually he'll throw up a hologram of whatever unite morph you need to use in those situations.

I kind of hate that.

Not that it's a revelation to figure out what to use but there is no need to tell you all the time.

We can figure it out.

I think this is where it may have been my fault for playing on the gamepad. I could tell he was doing something, but it was too small to make out and it looked green (iirc). I was playing in my bed at the time so I couldn't toss it up on the big screen to see.

Next question: I have 100 members, but I'm still running into civilians to recruit. Is there any point to recruiting them or should I just pass em by?

I think the game is starting to click.

Some of the civilians could be special heroes that you take with you for every new level so I'd just keep collecting them.

You can recruit them for a final overall score bonues and for every 10 civilians you recruit (whether you capped the max or not) you get a 1/10 to get a Rocket item that won't lower your score when used.

I think you do need to the gamepad to activated it, I played off-screen so I never used it.

Recruiting them also gives experience points to your heroes.

The problem is that not everyone stops to even pay attention to him. Like during fight on the giant mech's arm during Operation 001-B.

Damnit, I watched a few video reviews for this game and I was initially down on it, but this thread is REALLY making me want to pick this up.

About 200 hours into Pokémon Y, I decided, "Yeah, I think I'll take a break."

So last night, I tried using my GTAV save data on my new PS3 (GTAV having killed my old PS3), and found the data was corrupt.

Shiet!.gif

So then I went to my No. 2 option (which is probably the better option, anyways) -- The Wonderful 101!

I picked up where I left off, and finished 6-B and 6-C. BOTH INCREDIBLE! And a great way to ease back into the game -- this is one of those titles where the nonstop pace and density/variety of mechanics makes it seem intimidating to "jump back in," but 6-B begins with some riveting flashbacks (seriously -- the story is surprisingly good) and an amazing new playable character in the form of
Nelson's pompadour-ific drill-toting Wonderful One
. The music in this flashback was AMAZING. Then you have a stellar isometric shoot-'em-up sequence where you retain full control of the Wonder Line and use it to pry open doors and tear down spiked barriers and even slow down time to safely pass through an underwater carousel, all while rolling and blocking and loop-de-looping with the ship and returning fire via the cannons. Then there's a rollicking boss encounter, sweet and to the point, topped off with some heartwarming character development and reconciliation.

When the action returned to dry land, you have the game's trademark variety of, well, variety, carrying fireballs across ice floes to thaw out optional glaciers containing new recruits, or fighting robots on a teetering bridge, or sliding blocks across ice to trigger switches and lower spikes, or hanging onto statues to brace yourself against the wind.

I laughed out loud at the bit where
Immorta "translates" Vorkken's message etched in the ice
. There was an odd glitch before the Vorkken encounter in 6-C, however -- whenever the Wonderful Ones appeared in character portraits during the cutscene, their eyes were showing through their masks. By that I mean their REAL eyes, underneath the mask; it was like someone had rubbed away the part of the mask over their eyes. Occasionally the missing bits would flicker back into place. It was... interesting, to say the least. But it ceased once the battle begun. I loved all of the QTEs in this battle --
fist-to-fist shenanigans between the two ships!
. And the story developments in regards to Vorkken and Immorta, and the appearance of Gimme at the end (
whose appearance is surely based on a famous alien sighting, although the name eludes me at the moment)
, were a great payoff to an exhaustive battle and make me interested to see what happens next.

Various games and my recent addiction to Breaking Bad may have conspired to interrupt my TW101 playthrough, and I'm sure SM3DW and ALBW will do the same, but suffice it to say this game always proves it's an incredible GOTY contender every time I play it. Definitely one of this generation's finest.

The eyes in the cutscenes aren't a glitch, its a feature of holding down one of the shoulder buttons
Wow, really? I'm usually careful to avoid touching buttons during cutscenes, but maybe a shoulder button was pressing into my lap while I petted my cat or something, lol.

The W101 cult following is pretty funny already, much more than with any Platinum game.

"Oh there's words "action" and "game" or "game of the" in the title, better go namedrop Wonderful 101"

Which is understandable, it has had niche hit written on it from day one. Haven't had the chance to try it yet, maybe someday (it took me like 5 years to play Viewtiful Joe goddammit!)

Huh? Are you surprised that people mention this game in action games related threads?

Anyway, better fix that when you can, the game deserves all the praise it gets. This thread particularly stresses the fact that the amount of content, secrets and depth very rarely seen in modern games.

I shockingly don't like this game and I'm not sure why.

I've loved every platinum game this generation and even bothered to get all of the achievements in every single one of them. I adored Bayonetta, Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising, and really liked Anarchy Reigns.

This game though...I don't know. I've tried five times now to give it "another chance" because I feel like I should like it. The combat just feels like a slog to me, I don't know. I don't find the drawing mechanic very interesting and the combat feels very simple to me. (I've watched tutorial videos on YouTube too, I can replicate all of the stuff I've seen and still feel the same way) Yeah I can air juggle guys and change my weapon mid combo...but I don't know. I feel like I'm going through motions rather than playing interesting combat senarios and doing cool combos. I'll grant I'm about 4-5 hours in but I have most of the weapons at this point.

Glad you guys are enjoying it but it's probably my personal disappointment of the year. Absolutely shocked that I'm saying that, but here I am.

I agree, though I've only played the demo so far. I just really don't like the controls at all. I want to like it, but it just doesn't feel as natural to play as something like Viewtiful Joe or even as what I played of Bayonetta 2 at E3. If it drops dramatically in price, I might give it another chance, but the demo did nothing to make me want it.

Whoops, I meant people with W101 avatars but accidentally left that out. It just looks funny.

There will probably never be anything natural about controlling a group of 100 super heroes at once. But what you can't intuit you can make up for with practice. Which is pretty cool. You overcome some amazing mental hurdles to play this game sure, but the places its takes you is some rarefied air indeed.

can you play this game with just the gamepad? Or is there special stuff where you need the tv and game screen?

There is special tv and gamepad screen stuff. But there is a picture in picture mode option in the game so you can just play on a pro controller if you'd like.

You can play off-tv with no problem if you can do the unite morphs with the right analog stick without issue. That really is the primary use of the gamepad is to draw out the Unite morphs with your stylus or finger.

Other than that there is nothing lost.

I don't disagree with the original post, but my only criticism is that the game's design feels a little lazy-- it's way too scripted, especially the boss fights. It's not that the game isn't impressive for what it is I suppose, but my definition of the "perfect action game" would be one that's a little more "emergent gameplay"/ludonarrative driven.

I just finished the boxing lava fight with the two big robots and love how varied the game is. However, I can't stand the story with how it is so crudely pasted together over half-assed dialogue boxes. To make matters even worse, my version does not even lip-sync the dialogue well. But that aside, this game is definitely one of the most original games I have played in a long time with how much different content and designs are thrown in, which in the end is why I love playing Platinum games.

I agree with the first play through being the tutorial itself. I was getting my ass kicked for a good portion of the game. Dropped to easy mode, beat them game, now running through with Platinums on normal. Treat every fight as a learning experience, as you will have your chance to fight that monster again as your progress.

I can understand the complaints of the crazy variety in the game. You are doing some things that require a new control scheme to learn, and after that mission, you don't use it again. That could be frustrating for people. I barely beat the
Punch-Out Boss
and I was a bit frustrated at that. To get a Platinum there I'll have to practice that fight over and over, and that's not fun.

For the controls, I started by drawing out the shapes, but eventually moved to the right stick. I'm probably drawing too quickly, as I would have to draw the sword over and over again before it gets recognized. Again that's probably due to me being too hasty.

Some of the things you can do when you are competent with the controls are visually and personally appealing. I really enjoyed the game, and it was my first next - gen experience (Only console was Wii last gen).

The lip-synching is deliberately off. I think it's supposed to evoke old-school puppet shows like Thunderbirds, which this game reminds me of for some reason.

I'm going to have to borrow this game from the library at some point because my only experience with it has been the demo.

And after the demo, well, I felt weird. There's been so much positive praise of the game and many people seem to view it as the best thing on the WiiU. Yet after the demo I felt like I had played one of the worst games in a long time. I feel confused about that, and part of me thinks that maybe the demo is just a poor representation of the actual game.

Game needs practice, a lot. But it's not clunky, uncomfortable or anything, it's just new and different.

As someone who wasn't a fan of the demo, I can't say how much I love this game. Really does a great job of pacing it's action and journey. Everything just feels right.

..but I hate the off screen stuff. Those moments when you have to look at the pad to solve some puzzle. I just can't stand the gyro camera controls, gives me a headache everytime.

Everyone should pick up this game.

I just beat the game last night on normal. What an amazing ride! The best part is, I kept getting better at the game as I progressed and am now tempted to replay from the beginning with my newly acquired knowledge of the intricacies of the battle system!

Well, it's pretty well established that the demo dies a really poor job introducing you to the game, especially when considering this game plays unlike anything else before it. It's merely tells you the flavor of the 'drink' you'll be drinking with the full game. The actual game is like having a semi-truck tanker full of that drink.

Regardless, the game is still very unforgiving, rarely letting you know what you're doing wrong. But like old-school games of the past, it let's you experiment until that "aha!" moment when you make a discovery, or exercise a new level of skill. Once you accept that there won't be any hand-holding here, all your gaming instincts kick into full gear... then the awesomeness begins!

I never heard anybody who played this claim he dislikes it. If only it released after the WiiU takes off (if ever...). It deserves a sequel more than anything else.

People who do have almost always just played the demo. But I've seen a few who have played the actual game and still haven't enjoyed it. Probably less than 10, but they're out there.

I definitely still think this is the GOTY though. Such an amazing game that I still find myself returning to frequently.

I started this game up the other day, played about 45 minutes and I had no clue what was going on or what the character was doing. I got stuck right at the beginning where you are supposed to somehow line everyone up to make a bridge across a gap. I did it after about 15 minutes of trying, but I really don't know how it happened. I eventually "finished" the first mission, still confused on what I was supposed to do in the game. At pretty much no point did I experience a "wow, this game is going to be great" moment. But maybe that'll come when I start playing more.

Your experience is pretty typical. The game is overwhelming at first, bombarding you with colours and explosions and progress is sometimes trial and error. It also feels weird controlling such a tiny character, and you're left wondering "what the f*ck is this game?" Stick with it though my friend, the penny will drop.

The key to the game's appeal is the depth and variety of the combat system. This only reveals itself after you get your arse kicked for the umpteenth time and you have no option but experiment. Little by little a whole playground of opportunities unfold. Nailing a fight in quick time as a result of a sequence of well-executed morphs is one of videogames' most satisfying experiences - it's also an experience that couldn't be adequately replicated on a controller. Then the game has this delightfully hokey story, If you're not in love with the characters by the end of this ridiculous yarn then you're a heartless bastard indeed.

There, sermon over. Let us know how you get on!
