Neowin: Xbox One lacks proper storage management; Microsoft says it is 'automatic'

I was already annoyed with Steam's flaky automatic updating sometimes on my <10Mb connection, this sounds like a nightmare.

Isn't this pretty much how the PS4 handles memory, with things being deleted as required?

I wonder what their plan is for external HDD support. We'll need control over what moves where at that point.

I'm sure once external support is patched in, we will be able to manage storage as usual

So if you have a data cap you may be screwed right? It does automatic downloads of stuff and you can't really determine what stays or goes.

If anything I'd want more storage management options, not less. MS, I know what I want on my system more than you do. Forced reinstalls/downloads is unacceptable.

its manual as far as I can tell.

Per kotaku:
Cached/installed game data will stay on the hard drive until the user deletes it. Cerny said that there had been some internal discussions at Sony about having the PS4 auto-delete installed data from games that players hadn't used in a while. They decided against it, figuring that gamers would never want to feel "blindsided" and would prefer to make their data management decisions manually. Probably a good choice!

Giant Bomb was complaining about the same thing. I don't think the PS4 is any better, either.

what? i can go into settings on my PS4 right now and it has system storage management as well as application saved data management

so how is the PS4 not any better at this?

Looks pretty manual to me:

This also explains why external drives are not yet supported. I plan on slapping a 3 TB drive externally at this point and I will just let it do its thing.

We will just have to see how it plays out.. would certainly be nice to have some control over this when it comes to corrupted saves and so forth though.

So basically, Microsoft takes the control from you, and Sony gives you control over the storage management?

That sounds about right.

With PS4, you know exactly how much space something is taking up and how much space you have left. This is not the same in the least.

Yes it is. You can see EXACTLY how much space is taken up and by what.

Oh I didn't realize it wouldn't even let you do that on Xbox One.

Still though, neither system lets you dig deep and see each individual item and put game saves onto a USB drive or anything like that. Right?

That's what I'd be the most worried about. I rarely buy digital downloads of retail games, but when I do I make damn sure to never delete them so I don't have to download them again.

If I had an Xbone and it deleted any downloaded games over disc installed ones (regardless of what I'd played recently) I'd be fucking pissed.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
This is a disaster in the making. I can't believe they don't allow you control over your data.

So, I go all digital :

Every time I download a new game, I'll have no idea what game it's going to decide to erase until after I initiate the download? It's a crap shoot every time?

And I might be stuck having to download 60 gigs to play a game it decided to delete if I want to play it again?

Seriously, why is this a good idea at all?

How is all of this going to work once external HDD are able to be used. I guess a manual system would be added at that time. That or this system will remain but take thee additional storage into account

I imagine all save data will have offline backups, since save data is usually tiny and takes up no space. If not, jesus christ Microsoft.

Translation:

We don't want to give you peons even the slightest inkling regarding how this console works because the less you understand about the technology you own, the more inroads we have to provide you value-add services in the future.

Plus, we have deemed you all criminals with the intent to hack, jailbreak, mod, and pirate until proven innocent.

Auto delete? If I buy digitally, I sure as hell want to be the one who decides what gets deleted off my hard drive.

The PS4 lets you transfer save files (Application Data) to USB.

I was stunned when I heard about this on the Bombcast. Jeff Gerstmann said that it automatically deleted the game that you had played the least (or gone the longest since playing) in whatever time frame, and that it first deleted only enough so that it was still playable, but not fully installed.

It sounds like it could wreak havoc with bandwidth caps, and I was totally with Vinny when he brought up the example of buying DLC for a favorite game months after release, only to have to wait to redownload the base game again because you played stuff in the meantime.

I get that some people can't figure out how to delete things to make space on their hard drive and need the system to do it for them, but why not have a way to turn on manual storage management for those that want it? Hopefully it'll get added in at some point in the future.

There's no reason why it wasn't there in first place, it's just another case of Microsoft knows best.

Man, why would they change this from 360. Ugh. Its like they're building their products for only idiots. We're not idiots MS.

Countries with bandwidth caps need the ability to have manual management. Otherwise this is going to get really messy.

It sounds bad.

Losing saves through no interference of your own?
How the fuck wouldn't that be a goddamn huge problem.

Why would you lose them? They are backed up to the cloud. That is the very opposite of losing them. There is more chance of your console HDD corrupting than the cloud servers losing them. If anything the cloud servers will be backed up regularly by MS in case they need to restore for any reason.

Not sure how I feel. It would be better if I was given the option to opt in or out. Since I can't opt out, I'm not a fan.

Automatically is a lot better and less time consuming. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure a lot of users want to do it manually and they should have made it work either way. Same for the PS4; they should give you the option to do it auto.
