Project Eternity's "GAF Inn" - Under Renovation

OynZbWk.jpg

The following collaboration is open to ALL NeoGAF Members. Please participate as openly as possible! I will bump this thread once a day to ensure maximum participation.

UPDATE 08: The waiting game. Watching paint dry:
Thank you all for participating. All the data has been submitted to Obsidian. Now we wait.

--------------------------------------------------------------

On September 2012, NeoGAF (along with other countless gamers) participated in helping Obsidian Kickstart the highly anticipated RPG in development; Codename "Project Eternity.

Legacy thread here: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=491435

What is Project Eternity?

Obsidian Entertainment said:
Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system - positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you'll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.

We are excited at this chance to create something new, yet reminiscent of those great games and we want you to be a part of it as well.

Rather than individually pledging to support the game, a collective funding was started to do something special. It was decided to pledge $5000 and earn the following reward:

Design and Name an Inn: Collaborate with Obsidian to design project eternity! NeoGAF’s personalized area will be prominently seen in the shipped game. We can name it (within reason), and with our input, the design team at Obsidian will create an Inn in our honor. We will also be able to Design and Name an NPC and an Epic Weapon.

With 159 Backers (Average of $35 per Inn Keeper!), we were able to pledge $5,500 (with biggest donation of $700!) and we can finally make this dream a reality.

The biggest obstacle awaits! Lets see how creative we all are; it's up to you all how this turns out!

Now that the dust has settled, we have been contacted by Obsidian Entertainment to provide more detail on what our creation is going to look like. We are the visionaries, while Obsidian constructs our vision to their fullest potential.

From Obsidian Entertainment's Producer on Project Eternity:

Brandon Alder said:
Hello. My name is Brandon and I am the producer on Project Eternity. I am contacting you because, now that we are entering production, we will need to collect info from you regarding your inn design. This info would normally be collected from our backer site, but we are still in the process of revamping it.

Our lead area designer mentioned that he would like to call you. If you don't mind, you can send me a number you would like to be reached at and a good time to contact you. If that doesn't work, we can always do the email thing.

Below is a basic form that we will be providing from our website. You don't necessarily have to fill this out, but you may want to review it so when you interact with Bobby you will have an idea of what you want. Again, the form is a very basic one, so if there are any special things that need to be worked out (within reason), Bobby will be the one to speak to about it.

Thanks,

-B

To make this as streamlined as possible, a poll would be created every week to successfully decide what the Inn would be like.

The ring was crafted by an orlan priest. He infused the ring with the captured soul fragments of his enemies and gave it to his prince as a gift. For a while, it went back to the Aedyr Empire where it was on display in a public exhibit as a morbid cultural curiosity from Eir Glanfath. Eventually, a burglar stole the ring and wound up taking it back to the Dyrwood.

It has all gone wrong.

Edit: Better now. Is it really going to be called "GAF Inn"? Because that's pretty lame. Imagine "Reddit Inn" or "4chan Inn".

This Inn will take 6 months to get a membership, and 200 pints to be able to be accepted as a regular.

I don't know about names. The GAF Banderas? I don't have any real contribution to this thread other than that.

The previous thread make it that GAF stands for Goose and Fox, which is pretty good I say. I don't know if there will be any difference here on that (GAF as acronym).

No idea.

I second everything in this post

Lets not forget that the walls of the inn are famous for their satirical paintings of local noblemen, which move in their canvases like if they were alive for a few seconds before they start again.

If I were giving the responsibility of naming a tavern, I'd want to know as much as the world before hand, maybe going as far as letting someone from the dev team have some input.

I'm no writer/artist, so as for the more aesthetic aspects of the inn I really haven't the foggiest but I know a few things for sure;

The name's gotta be The Goose and Fox (bonus points for some kind of fable behind the name choice)

The tavern owner's name is some play on Evilore (Levi van Erol is a pretty good one), and the idea of him being an ill-seen but well-traveled yarn spinner.

And the backstory of the tavern being a place of somewhat sheltered exclusivity, but closely watched by various idiosyncratic bouncers (read: mods), and filled with cultural/political debate equal parts insightful and frivolous.

I like the idea of a "functional" GAF inn. Sort of like a "cheers" bar or something. Its a place where people, of all manner, drink and be merry.
The "luxurious" option makes it seem all hoitey toitey.

I definitely like the idea of an upscale tavern. As to the name I think that depends on what type of tavern wins out.

There is a persistent rumour though among the patron of the inn, that there is an exclusive part, accessible only by those who have paid enough gold for such membership.
GAFgold :p

In a quiet side street sits an inn. A jagged line divides the greystone bones of the damaged lower level from the once-perfect russet stucco exterior of the upper floor.

An adventurer steps inside, to find a menacing doorman with crazy eyes. "Are you a member?" he demands impatiently. "Only members allowed. "
"Yes", replies the adventurer.
"Password?" Asks the doorman.
"The lore reeks of evil."
"Very well, enter. But watch yourself. You don't want me to have to throw you out."

The adventurer enters the main room of the inn. A single candle illuminates each round table, and a small space around it. As the adventurer walks to the bar, he hears small snippets of debate. Each table seems to have a group passionately arguing a different subject. He passes on, not wishing to get involved.

Suddenly the noise level increases around one table. "You idiots are wrong!" Screams a patron. "I have personal knowledge showing my rectitude! " He feels a breath on the back of his neck and spins around to find his throat held in a steady grip. "Show me your proof", whispers the doorman. As the entire crowd quietly watches the offender being cast into the street on his head, murmers are audible. "Never mess around where the Bishop can hear."

Not having played my copy of Baldurs Gate, I'm not sure on the flavor of dialogue that's appropriate.

Blashmephy on me but I haven't play a single Obsidian classic RPG. This will be my first!

Gaffery B. Lieve

· In 50 words or less, describe the basic concept of what the innkeeper.
More of a warden than an innkeeper, Gaffery is a red hooded wise man watching out for hostility and mischief. He will tell you stories about all the people he had to throw out, and will warn you upon entrance to watch every word you utter on his watch.

· In 50 words or less, describe the basic concept of what the inn/tavern. E.g.: "High class inn where nobles and important business men meet to discuss future deals."
A place well-known for all the mighty warriors who stayed at it at one point. People wait for months just to be allowed entrance. Upon entering it’s a rowdy place rundown with hooligans fighting over trivial matters, everyday a bunch of them are kicked out to maintain a peaceful atmosphere..

· In 75 words or less, describe the appearance of the inn/tavern. E.g.: "High end furniture with lots of polished metal fittings are neatly arranged in the main room. The walls are draped with fine art and the whole place has a feeling of class and sophistication."
The tavern area consists of two separate areas with the bar overlooking both of them. The gray walls and stone tables are draped with orange cloth. There's a mysteriously locked door leading to the basement.

· In 100 words or less, describe the concept for the history of the inn/tavern. E.g.: "The tavern was founded by Jonas Sayne, a merchant from a noble background. Realizing that Defiance Bay lacked a place for the rich and powerful to meet to discuss business, Sayne commissioned the creation of The Discreet Gentleman in the business friendly Copperlane disctrict. It is rumored a backroom of the tavern houses an entrance to the city jail dungeons."
The tavern was founded by a legendary hammer-wielding traveler known as The Bishop. Meant to be a public house for the cultured and sophisticated, most people were refused entry until proven to be worthy. Those disrupting the peace or harassing others were to face The Bishop's hammer. Even now with the Bishop long gone people still fear his hammer. The mysterious basement is rumored to be both a dungeon and an exclusive upscale area.

It's obvious that I lost interest midway while writing these :p
I might give it another try later, after reading others' ideas.

Done.

I went with round windows and round tables because of the round NeoGAF logo.
Same here, I'm thinking they should be gray with orange cloth covering part of them for the same reason.

Round tables, best for discussion.

Portraits, not unlike avatars.

Something between functional and common. Functional seems nicer, but GAF as a forum is pretty barebones with the necessities and minimal fluff. So I think it makes sense to represent it that way.

I can see lighting going either way, bright and lively seems better though.

Don't have much to say on walls, windows, and floors.

Also, +1 for Goose and Fox, none of the other names have really stood out to me like that one.

I just filled out the first survey. I first wanted to go for something dark, stony and medieval at first, but thinking about it I figured that airy and with round windows and tables is actually more suitable.

HSI?

I'm also partial to "The New Goose And Fox".
Rebuilt after the original "Goose And Fox" was burnt down by disgruntled patrons.
I like this. Not too out-of-place for people who have no idea where it comes from, but still obvious enough for people in the know. Just Goose and Fox is fine as well though, New Goose and Fox might be a bit too wink-wink nudge-nudge.
