YouTube videos emerge of XBOne Blu-ray drives failing / making grinding noises

Really doubt that it is doing any damage to the discs.

How did this get past QA? Same with the blue light issues. I dont know much about how they test these things but these seem like really basic issues to catch.

I don't think it's chewing the disc. One of the videos has the disc ejected pretty easily, and it didn't appear to be damaged.

However, I do have to wonder if this is the great shitstorm that CBOAT foretold, or just another Blue Light Of Death overblown minor issue.
Blue light of death is a minor issue?
Ita a huge issue I had to send mine in for replacement. I'm here happy that I got it say one and boom.. a $400+ paperweight. Sorry I'm not attacking you. But this is unfair for consumers. Back in the days they used good tech parts. Now they got for cheap parts that could get faulty easier.

I just hope my day one xbo isn't faulty.. but knowing ms resume... :l

Unfortunate that a standard component like the Blu-Ray drive can go wrong. I hope it is a driver issue rather than a hardware failure because the last thing we need is a repeat of PS2 disc read errors

Welp I expected some problems but that's a new one for me

Would've thought the disc drive to be more reliable than most parts of the system for some reason

It doesn't look like any of the videos give any reason to believe there's damage to the disks?

If this is a widespread problem, shitty for the people with bum consoles, though.

Wait, why do multiple people in those videos have their xbone on top of other devices? That, thats not smart. :p
These people just spent $499 for an Xbox One. And you're expecting them to be smart? That was your first mistake.

Is this the crazy buttocks on a train thing
Doubt it. Probably a bad batch of systems all bought from roughly the same location. Guess we'll find out, though.

So is it just a noise? The discs don't seem to be damaged, is it reading them properly?

Edit: I see it's not reading the discs.

nobody is making it into a scandal... not yet at least. people are just posting videos of their problems.

please explain how this is easily fixable.

Its just a missalined cog in the drive mechanism. The 360 has the same issue. Obviously MS has to open up your console if you want to keep your warranty, but you could just as easily fix it yourself.

Back in the day there was nowhere to complain to. I just brought up PS2s, Sony denied the problem and lots of people got screwed over, now with Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and mainstream access to the Internet it is easier to make yourself heard and puts more pressure on companies to do something about it.

If it was widespread we would see more than 4 videos by now especially since it's been out in AU/EU for many hours.

Sucks, but all electronics have duds.

UPDATE: And just like that the nightmare is over. 11 hours after I first plugged the console in, it has started working of its own accord, without me changing anything. I wasn't even in the room when it moved into the proper console setup. What a relief. Thanks to the people who were nice in the comments. The rest of you are your own punishment.

Just buy your games and movies digitally. Problem solved

So there were problems with the initial update?

Because that's not surprising

More worried about the blu ray thing but only if its more common

Just like the issues with the PS4 were blown out of proportion on GAF, lets wait a few days and see if this is really an issue or just a few people got bad bluray drives.

Everything has a failure rate of some sort - even cheese can come in a damaged package making it mold quickly, but you don't see threads on grocery forums freaking out about them... or do you?!

yup, and it's easy to post videos on YT these days as soon as anyone has any issues. haven't heard this issues pop up with anyone i know so far who had one in advance.

Shame really. Regardless of our console preferences, I think it's kind of weird to celebrate these poor sods experiences as some sort of wide-ranging console defect. Shit, reading GAF and Twitter last week I fully expected my Amazon PS4 pre-order to burst into flames when I plugged it in.

These guys seem genuinely saddened by this. I don't own an Xbox One. I have a PS4. But man I can feel empathy for these guys if they went home day one and experienced this even if it's not my console of preference.

Ouch.... Failures are expected, but hopefully its not a bad batch of drives entirely. I imagine if it is a bad batch of drives they may not have checked in QA....

Don't see what the problem in any of these videos is, though it is odd that every one has them making popcorn in the background. Is this a new meme? Let's make popcorn and try to fake out people? Nice try, Sony.

Sounds like the bluray drive's gears are misaligned or something. I remember that sound from when I took apart my first PS3's drive and put it back together incorrectly.

These sounds just made me remember what would happen when you put a CD formatted disc into some PS2 phats. Hellish grinding.
