Live countdown to major Persona team announcement from Atlus [Summary in OP]

So, I was just wondering since some guys have (jokingly) brought up Pachinko machines and I was never much of a man interested in Japanese culture - Why are the Japanese so into gambling their money away on those things? I'd imagine them to be the more frugal sort than the drowned in debt (On Personal, and National levels) west.

Just wondering, since even though I burn most of my disposable income on games, I pretty much can't stand the idea of gambling, and I get nervous enough having my money in banks and the safety and security of the stock market.

Just wondering, because simply saying I'd be disappointed and confused would be a complete understatement if in an alternate universe from the deepest depths of the 9th circle of hell this turned out all to be for a Pachinko machine which got the Japanese gamers all excited and pleased.

It may help to know that casinos and many forms of gambling are illegal in Japan.

Japanese people aren't that muh more frugal than other people in my experience, either.

Gambling is like a drug.

If you try it, and you win, you wanna keep playing so you can keep winning, even if you lose sometimes.

It's a high risk, high reward kind of thing.

1.5 hours holy shit the hype is real

Gambling is the only thing that can elicit emotions after years of being in a loveless marriage and working 9 to 9 everyday.

Well I wouldn't say that "Japanese" are so into gambling their money away. That's a poor generalization. Slot machines and gambling exist as a culture anywhere in the world really. There will always be a segment of working adults who enjoy gambling. The interesting thing about Pachinko and Pachislot in Japanese culture is the nature of what it is, which might explain your perception.

In most of the world gambling is recognized as what it is, and licensed specifically for slot machine rooms in clubhouses, or widespread use in actual casinos. These are heavily regulated, and so people don't see it everywhere in the cities and whatnot. In Japan, gambling of this sort is outlawed. But you can't really take something away from people when they want it, so people will find loopholes.

Pachinko and Pachislot machines are created as gaming devices, much like arcade machines, and are not considered gambling. You cannot win money from these machines, instead you exchange your winning tickets for "prizes". Hence because it does not legally qualify as gambling, these machines are widely available in every major city for anyone who wants to set one up. Many are run by the underworld, and everyone knows that it is basically a form of gambling which the government does not want to crack down on.

So I would say that in practice, it is really no different from anywhere else in the world, it's just a more public aspect of Japanese culture because their legislation and enforcement are so backwards and dumb. :)

It starting to look like whatever coming is persona 4 related. Maybe persona 5 is continuation from persona 4, not a whole new setting.
Maybe it's persona 4 part 2.

I'm fine with that as long as it's not on IOS or anything free 2 play or micro transaction bs.

So is this shaping up to be a string of big announcements or one huge announcement?

Some people think it's one product (i.e. Persona 5), some people think it's three. I'm leaning towards three announcements because of the three boxes on the teaser site.

1. P3-related product as a P3 movie tie-in.
2. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax for consoles announced.
3. Persona 5.

It would be awesome if there was a jump in time and all the characters are in college. For some mysterious reason they all went to the same college unknowingly and people around them start dying. They decide to reunite and figure out a new mystery.

I really hope Persona 5 focuses on new characters and a new setting. They are using a lot of P3 and P4 to advertise the reveal though. I hope that if any previous character shows up in P5 it would just be a cameo.

What does the folks who are awake now think IS GOING to be revealed during the announcement?

A few characters? The MC? A trailer of some sort? Becuase I remember the reveal of SMT IV was clearly just a background with some silhouettes... if Atlus is hyping this up so damn much they should show more than what they've shown for SMT IV... right?

I mean they are going to have some sort of a live talk show afterwords - SURELY the reveal has to contain a degree of SUBSTANCE proportionate to this hype.

Aww man mods made twitch chat boring now

People were posting porn links with a Twitch staffer watching. We're already kinda skirting the rules by rebroadcasting Nico Nico, even if its free. So chat is in slow mode now. Thank 4chan and tumblr. :p

SMT4 was revealed differently. It was revealed in Famitsu, so it had a teaser site due to the game still being in development at the time. I think we'll see a bit more than what we did for SMT4.

That's a nice idea, will day 1 for that. I love characters in P4, another game featuring the same cast is great.
Maybe P4 part 2 for Vita, P5 with new setting on console.
