Official Sony video hints at a new character for Uncharted 4 and beyond

So, I was messing around with the #4ThePlayers video on the German YouTube channel (haven't seen it on the official PlayStation Youtube channel for whatever reasons). It's the trailer we all know and love with dozens of hints at all things PlayStation, this time though you can actually interact with the ad, pause it, click in and learn more about each individual PlayStation hint.

Here's what I got once I clicked in on the Drake's Antiques:

Translation:
After the thrilling adventures of the modern treasure hunter Nathan Drake, the new Uncharted series will be developed exclusively for PlayStation by Naughty Dog Inc.

Sounds to me like a) it's a different character, b) since they put emphasize on "modern treasure hunter", it's someone older, quite possibly in an earlier time period and c) it'll be a series of games for PS4 and PS Vita.

Thoughts?

Francis Drake duh.

While I love Nathan Drake, I realize that the Uncharted series can't just keep making the same game over and over. They need a fresh angle with this one.

Thankfully, Naughty Dog is one of those developers who's able to pull shit like that off.

Could be the villain.
.
I think this is the most likely scenario, a big part of uncharted is the loveable characters, and without them it would be very different.
He probably got left somewhere by Drake, and wants revenge. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the game was set far in the past, but I very much doubt it all is.

I'm pretty sure that everything is pointing to the game being set in the past, probably in the era of Francis Drake.

Imagine an MS2 style swtitcheroo, starting with Nathan and moving to Francis after the first 2 hours

Even better, imagine constant switching between the two times, with Francis and Drake in the same general locations. When Nathan reaches a place that has actually been visited by Francis, its in a much worse state of disrepair to prevent repetition and is presented with seamless cinematic transitions between controlling Nathan and controlling Francis

For Francis to work, combat would have to be massively marginalised I think, or make them stealth sections where avoidance is the best option (TLoU gameplay crossover OMG :p)

It would be incredible imo, and if anyone could pull it off, it's Naughty Dog

Then I hope they change up his appearance. He still looks way too generic for my tastes.

Really now? He's generic because he's a man and he has black hair and a some designer stubble? He's supposed to fit in to the action adventure serial tradition.

Next time we can have a skinny bald guy in his 40's with allergy problems and a lisp.

It has to be later than Francis Drake, because of this sentence in the reveal trailer: "Every betrayed us all."

Henry Every, also Evory or Avery, (23 August 1659 – after 1696) [...] was an English pirate who operated in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans in the mid-1690s.

Sir Francis Drake, vice admiral (c. 1540 – 27 January 1596)

What time period is Sir Francis drake? I mean I can't see them making an uncharted without guns. Fucking swashbuckling and shit.

Did you watch the teaser trailer? That's not Nolan North.

Yeah, sure. But that could point to a number of scenarios:

1) Antagonist and descendant of someone from Drake's time who is out for revenge.
2) Same as the above but based in Drake's era
3) Somebody from Drake's time and plays out in parallel with the modern story (game split between 'historical' period and modern times.

I just think somehow it's going it be Nathan Drake. He's pretty much the face of Playstation at this point. If they were ever gonna move away from Drake I just see them moving to a new IP instead.

I'd be completely turned off by an Uncharted game set in the past. Not interested in a 3rd person shooter with muskets.

Nate, Sully, and Elena are Uncharted.

Why reboot a successful series though? It doesn't even seem like something Naughty Dog would do.

Because it was a solid trilogy that would easily stay beyond it's welcome after a fourth iteration.

And so they can treat the game like a new IP, while retaining the brand recognition, exactly like inFamous and Killzone.

I think the thread title is reaching a bit. There is nothing there that suggests to me the character is older, or in the past, by saying modern lol.

In all honesty, I would eat my hat if it is not Nathan Drake as the main character.

If it is set in the past then they might as well also have the main theme by Sara Bareilles.

Uncharted without Nathan Drake would be about as tolerable as Indiana Jones without Indy. Too inextricable at this point.

But I guess we'll see. It would certainly kill a lot of my hype.

Nobody cared about Killzone characters. People seemed more interested in Cole's haircut than Cole himself in infamous.

These are arguably the three best stories in gaming.

They call it the NEW Uncharted series?

It's a reboot as the title card inferred. That's brilliant.

Less pulp maybe?

I give you the first point.

The second point, not so much. This was the very first teaser for Uncharted 3:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSJIEGqpEMo

See, no number, no subtitle. Nothing. Hell, the Uncharted 4 teaser even has a skull with four slashes in it right underneath the name. Implying Uncharted 4 moreso than the teaser for 3 did. :p

Ehh whatever it is im sure ill be fine with it. I trust ND to deliver the goods, im more interested in seeing what the game will look like considering as far as we know it will he PS4 only and that should give the team some horsepower to do some awesome shit.

If it is set in the past then the emphasis will surely be placed on exploring and finding secrets rather than gunplay. It might mean a big tonal shift and departure from the previous uncharted games. I for one would love more exploration as we've had enough of pointless shooting sequences disrupting the narrative which was one of the main reasons Uncharted 3 felt to disjointed. We've had enough of mass murdering protagonists in these type of games and its time to bring back a sense of adventure again.

Reboots suggests resetting the universe the game sets in with the same main character. Different lead, different time wouldn't really be a reboot of the series, though it wouldn't feel like Uncharted without at least Drake in the mix.
