Toronto most youthful city in the world, global index says

By Carmen Chai Global News

TORONTO – Toronto is the most youthful city in the world, topping New York City, Paris and London, a new report suggests.

The Youthful Cities Index’s inaugural report is a new global comparison stacking the world’s countries side-by-side looking at where youth see the most potential for work and play. It named Toronto as the ‘Youthful City of the Year’ in 2014.

“It’s a city that’s amongst the most diverse in the world. It’s got a great film and music scene and it’s on the leading edge of things like digital access. On an economic standpoint, it’s a pretty good place even up against its American competition,” Robert Barnard, cofounder of Youthful Cities, told Global News.

“The excitement comes from the diversity and the playful aspects of Toronto. And there’s balance to it – overall it seemed to do pretty well in everything.”

Toronto was followed by Berlin, NYC, Dallas, Paris, Chicago and London, according to the report released Monday morning.

Youthful Cities says its index is the first to quantify on a global scale which cities are the most attractive to people between 15 and 29 years old. A string of factors were looked at: do employment opportunities or support for entrepreneurship look bleak for young people? How much is a movie ticket, a month of rent, a subway ride or a dozen eggs? What kinds of options do I have for night life, concerts, film festivals?

1. Toronto
2. Berlin
3. New York City
4. Dallas
5. Paris
6. Chicago
7. London
8. Los Angeles
9. Tokyo
10. Seoul
11. Buenos Aires
12. Mexico City
13. Rome
14. Johannesburg
15. Lima
16. Mumbai
17. Sao Paulo
18. Bogota
19. Istanbul
20. Shanghai
21. Cairo
22. Manila
23. Lagos
24. Nairobi
25. Kinshasa

The consideration of cost of living makes Toronto a bit of a baffling choice. Toronto is home to some very poor urban planning; the overlap between affordable housing and a lack of transit availability is almost total and the strategy of placing public housing in clumps has resulted in affordability being synonymous with crime.

EDIT: Also, our transit infrastructure is abysmal and is likely only going to get worse.

I'm not so much arguing that it's a bad place to live (it's not) but I've got to believe that there's better out there.

But we gots snow! D:

Fuck the sNOOOOOOOOOOOOw!

Kind of a weird thing to be known for, but better than being known for Ford.

Just to be clear, Toronto is not the most youthful city in the world. This is a list of cities that are most attractive to youths.

I'm 22 and from Toronto. Damn I always thought there was better out there for me as a youth, this is weird to see.

Grass is greener scenario. I have friends and family who live in Vancouver and Seattle and they dream of places like Los Angeles, London, New York etc. And I'm always telling them, there's nothing there, that isn't available to you here. Pretty much every large city has become the same in a sense.

There are no one size fits all solutions. So there may very well be somewhere better for you individually, there may not too.

Try and find an affordable home to buy in Toronto, or the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). My bro went to an open house yesterday at Yonge & 16th Avenue. A split, required lots of work, no furniture...asking for 525,000. Then their realtor revealed that the current owner bought it just last month for 470,000! The number of homes purchased for the sole purchase of flipping is preposterous!

did you grow up in amalgamated Toronto, or the old Toronto before amalgamation?

because i can see how growing up outside of Toronto's core would make you feel like that.
that being said, we dont need more people, so stay the fuck away, at least until i get out of this city.

I've been on exchange in Toronto for the last three months and this place beating New York and Berlin, and Amsterdam not even making the list? I call bullshit.

Those indicators are kind of dumb. Like how can you compare Toronto to a true megacity like Seoul or Mumbai

If i were to move to Toronto, where would be a nice place, not too expensive to live considering i have two kids, would be working from home as well as my wife.
Something around $250k tops, would that be enough for a decen sized house in a decent neighbourhood?

For a detached home, not in Toronto. You can move about an hour North away to say, Barrie, and you can probably get a 1800sq feet home for 250k.

$250K would get you nothing, nowhere in Toronto.

LET'S ALL GET NAKED

I live in Ottawa.

Check your goddam PM's.

It's so fucking cold here

Oh hell no.

Canadian urban property market is universally ridiculous.

Oooooh. I was about to say that Toronto was nowhere near the most youthful city in the world when measured by the average age of the population.

This makes sense, but the title they assign is perhaps a little misleading.

Yeah. No way Tokyo is so young with their exploding elderly population. LOL

That said, so much national activity's centered there that it appears attractive to just about everybody in the country, which is another reason why its inclusion is redundant (Tokyo's been the locus for almost a millennium now).

Not Mississauga or Markham or Oakville those places are expensive. Milton and Brampton and Whitby maybe?

Well like I said, it'd be tough, but you can find those kinds of houses in Mississauga if you are persistent.

For that price range, within Toronto you're looking at small condos that aren't big enough for a family, or a small house in a sketchy/potentially-up-and-coming neighborhood, like Malvern in the east end of the city, with a history of gang activity. Housing in Toronto to minimally meet your criteria starts between 400k-500k. The smallest semi-detached houses in desirable areas start around 650k. Check realtor.ca for more info. Aurora, Newmarket, Barrie, and other towns nearby located at either the North or the East of Toronto would offer better liveability for $250k.

I think Tokyo is pretty much a blast for young people (and furthermore the list doesn't really seem to be about the number of younger inhabitants). But then again, that's part of the problem, it's the rest of Japan which is becoming a wasteland (i.e. entire villages with one student-per-school sort of thing).

I never found the transit to be a problem. It's overblown IMO, a subject for water cooler conversation.

It's not close to what it should be, but yeah it is exaggerated.

It actually says quite a lot about the city that an under built and underfunded transit system is the worst problem it has and what residents obsess over... other than the crack smoking mayor of course.

Not in Brampton either. If you find something for $250,000 in Brampton it will be a former crack house and need at least $100,000 in work.

I think its true what they say - Toronto is a nice place to visit, but not to live. It is not an easy life here. I always dreamed of owning a condo downtown but only in the last 2-3 years have I shifted my plans to moving elsewhere where I won't be forced to spend the next 50 years breaking my back to pay rent. The thing that really sticks out for me having visited other cities in the US and Europe is how bad Toronto's transit system is. No really, travel the world and see for yourself. I mean it is very very bad and it keeps getting worse and more expensive.

I can live in a mansion in many beautiful places in the world (and without the harsh winters) for $200,000 in a house that'd cost a million dollars in Toronto.
