So what's stopping them for doing this? Pumping up new game and new IPs should the priority for them.

Nintendo generally refuses to buy studios because lets be honest most of the Industry doesn't want to work for Nintendo so if Nintendo buys them likely lose most of the staff rendering the buy useless.

Until Nintendo expands its genres and starts making things outside their comfort zone they are not going to be able to woo a lot of developers to stick around in new purchases.

The Industry thrives on disloyalty to studios. Developers etc. jump ship all the time and Nintendo operates in its own world where such concept is foreign.

They might realize that now if Mario 3d World fails worldwide. But, up until a few months ago, they seemed to believe that betting on known entities, new games very similar to successful predecessors was their safest bet.

Their line up with the Wii U has likely been their most conservative one ever, so it'd be a big direction change from where they are right now, and any change of direction likely won't be noticed until one or two years from now at least, and that's only if they realize their mistake, something they haven't really shown yet.

Really, just look at most mainstream marketing for 3d World. It makes the game look much more like a bland NSMB-like game than what it actually is. Nintendo's higher ups right now seem to believe that this extreme sense of familiarity is actually a selling point, even though it seems to be completely backfiring.

Not a single week above 10k after February. (RE Code Veronica helped the bump to 18k at the end of January.)

There's an 80k diff. now in favor of the Wii U, which I'm guessing will increase to ~100k after the holidays, then it'll be stable until the MK8/Smash weeks when the Wii U should get even further ahead (~200k ?), then there's no looking back to the DC anymore.

Obviously, this only means Wii U won't finish with ~2 million sold in Japan...

I'd be rather surprised if Wii U's second holiday beats Dreamcast's second holiday, given that Dreamcast has been beating Wii U's YTD handedly up to this point and had Shenmue come out on Dec 29, while Wii U basically has nothing left in its lineup that will sell systems. Plus as you say Dreamcast got a good boost from RE: Code Veronica.

In the next 14 weeks Dreamcast sold 298,750 units. Is it that hard to believe in the next 14 weeks Wii U might only sell 220,000 units?

That said, if it doesn't happen by then it won't ever happen cause you're right that after the RE bump dried up that system was dead as a doornail.

Edit: I feel I should also note that 14 more weeks would bring us to Feb 14 2001 on DC and Feb 23rd 2014 on Wii U, for clarity.

They already did with W101, but the game flopped hard despite its quality due to Nintendo lack of marketing. Is it Nintendo habit for not marketing new IP or something? Sound like they didn't want to spend resources unless the new IP can sell on their own.

Yeah it's like they riding on Mario for Wii U success. Too many similar games could reduce user's and potential buyer confidentiality on the console future. People want to see diversity on console they bought, not similarity.

The same could be said with SCEJ strategy too by releasing a bunch of hunter game on Vita. As much as GE2 give a bump that make Vita sold more than 3DS for once, the same couldn't happened after so much similar game. Japan already have Toukiden, Soul Sacrifice, and GE2 this year. More hunter games will make Vita even deader in the future.

Is this strategy a thing for dead platform?

NCL would like to keep hold of their staff for as long as they possibly can. But I seem to recall someone mention that Iwata is seemingly bothered about a high turnover in the West. I assume that's one of the biggest reasons why NCL does everything nowadays.
But whether he likes it or not, Iwata first step from now on will be to make it well aware that himself and his hired goons are setting up plans to help ramp up software output. Or else, he'll soon be ejected from his seat.

I dont know why people say W101 was not marketed. It was and it bombed. The ads were awful, you can argue that, but they existed.

Ive seen this card played for a long while and i dont know why. Nintendo couldve handled things better, but its performance is not because it was not marketed.

Now, if you mean it wasnt marketed as Mario or Pikmin, i would agree.

What could Nintendo possibly launch in 2015 that people would care about? And besides they will be ramping up for 4DS the next year anyway
Drop the console line after they've cleared out their current slate, release a handheld/console hybrid for early 2016.
It's time.

Whenever people like something that bombs, you will find at least a few posts saying it was never marketed.

Wonderful 101 was a divisive game, even among people who like action games. It wasn't particularly well-reviewed. And the aesthetic is at odds with its more hardcore gameplay elements. It's a very hard game to market properly and was never going to be a big seller.

IMO it's more like damage control strategy. Dropping support instantly would hurt Nintendo and Sony's reputation further so that as for WiiU and Vita they are trying their best to make damage minimum by trying to put least effort as possible.
Usually shooting for maximum profitability instead of market growth isn't good strategy if you are winning, but works well if you are trying to minimize the damage.

I seriously think the Vita TV would sell more if people knew what the fuck it was. Or really could do.

Granted the ad with the cute girl was great and all that explaining various things, they need to keep driving it to the public esp with the Christmas / New Years holiday coming up and how affordable it is and the huge library behind it.

Vita will do fine. Lots more games coming out for it as the PSP is phased out plus how the Vita can play PSP games now too even more so. If anything now more titles are coming out than initially with the system and lots of stuff geared towards the domestic market here. People just need something to latch on a huge number of fans and things will spread from there. Though the library is looking much better than ever before with all the titles in development once again.

The usual doom and gloom is getting old seriously.

Bear in mind that there's a difference between the consumer perspective and the business perspective. There's plenty of people who think that the Dreamcast had lots of this good games and that it's great to own. They aren't wrong. But that does not mean that it is successful as a product.

Man, when is the PS4 launching in Japan again? If that begins to sell under 20k weekly then the Japanese game industry is in severely bad shape. Only 3DS is doing well over there and it's not even selling THAT well, damn...

I meant on the holidays, which even not looking good right now, is still a wait and see.

As for Anihawk, he's a clever guy, a very handsome man and all that, but i disagree with him entirely. Pikmin release already showed that something was wrong when it failed to do numbers that could match its predecessors. Also, after pikmin, nintendo released a lot of software for it, you can argue it wasnt the right software, it surely wasnt, but there wasnt a huge drought after it. Lego city, Luigy U, Zelda, Party u, Wonderful 101, Rayman... Almost a game per month. Most of them bombed. I think the problem lies before pikmin, thats when the drought was full action. Pikmin shouldve released much sooner.

well now we're talking japan, i suppose, but there wasn't a game a month until july, and that's what a big problem was. from january through june there was game & wario. that's it. i don't know what japan was like in july 2013, but despite releasing three of the games you listed in that month, i doubt nintendo treated it like a relaunch. or even advertised the console itself much. i really think they planned on word of mouth to spread because hey a couple thousand people saw that nintendo direct!

Vita TV dropping this bad is not a good sign at all, I thought it would help a little but I wasn't expecting so little.
Seems like 3D World won't help the Wii U at all, a real shame because the game is glorious and many people should at least try it.

Their efforts haven't really done much in America either.Isn't that what it's doing...?

really, november 2013 has been their strongest push for the system since launch. they didn't advertise the price drop. they didn't advertise the tww hd bundle. they didn't advertise tww hd itself, or new super luigi u, or a myriad of other games they could have tried promoting (they were 'focusing on pokemon' according to them... yeah).

i think it's too late at this point.

Perhaps, but not at the price they were peddling it at. And really not even at the price they're peddling it at now.

hard to say. in 2012 the system opened fairly well. then it just died right away. i think there's a huge degree of it being not that interesting to people, but they had the opportunity to build hype for it and they just didn't. and then they had time to make it sound appealing and they just didn't. and then a year later they had the opportunity to make it sound great (when games started hitting) and they paid off all the american journalists, especially cliffy b.

"Not marketed" is poor choice of word on my part, I'm sorry for that. So yes, what I meant is marketed as big as Mario. But again Wonderful 101 like Freezie KO said is very divisive game. Not even all action fan like it. Such game usually come out 2 years of a console lifetime, not as early as this.

But how long is this strategy gonna work? They can't do this forever right? They must have another card in their hand before the market show the sign of saturation because of it.

New Super Mario Bros. U - 170,563 first week, 638,755 total
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 110,149 first week, 218,831 total
Super Mario 3D World - 106,697 first week
Pikmin 3 - 102,188 first week, 201,000 total

Super Mario 3D World will undoubtedly have better legs than Pikmin, though.

Pikmin have tiny legs.

Vita TV niche product confirmed. Maybe it does better elsewhere.

I really doubt it. I don't even see the point, it's mostly a less functional vita that takes away the best thing about vita - portability. I don't even.

Just give the Vita tv out.

Nintendo needs to announce Pokemon Gen VII for Wii U exclusively asap.

I don't think they should do that even when the situation is this dire. If they do that they will hurt the 3DS which many people buy just for that series.

What they do need to do is a spin off pokemon game that has somewhat of a mainstream appeal. Like that 3D fighter game that was rumored a while ago.

That sort of thing would be better than the other spin-offs for mainstream appeal and if they do good multiplayer (ha!) it could give life to the title and console besides smash bros.
What could Nintendo possibly launch in 2015 that people would care about? And besides they will be ramping up for 4DS the next year anyway

I don't think they will annouce a 3DS sucessor until 2016 honestly, they only started ramping up the library and if you look at handhelds their life cycle lasts as about as long as a console life cycle if you take the GBA onwards. The DS and PSP lasted forever but only because the last gen lasted forever too.

Nothing! I said nothing!

They could do a Pokemon WRPG where you are not collecting and the battle system is different. Get Obsidian to do it when they are done with South Park.

Dengeki Weekly Software Highlights: Week 47, 2013 (Nov 18 - Nov 24)

The final chapter in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy had a dull launch with 289K

  • FFXIII: 1.456 million debut week, 1.985 million total
  • FFXIII-2: 526K debut week, 877K total
  • Lightning Returns: 289K debut week
  • With a ~65% sell-through rate and 288,529 sales, we can estimate approximately 443,900 initial PS3 copies were shipped to retailers

3D Mario falls below 100K for the first time ever as Super Mario 3D World had a rough start

  • Super Mario 3D World had the lowest debut for any major Mario title since the N64
  • At 97,344, Super Mario 3D World came in at second place
  • The game had a ~50% sell-through rate, so we can assume an initial shipment of around 194,700

Based on the popular One Piece anime and manga, One Piece Unlimited World Red took third place

  • It sold 83,533 in its debut week
  • Sales of the "Adventure Pack" hardware bundle contributed to its 84K sales
  • Unlimited World Red exceeded sales of Unlimited Cruise SP, its 3DS predecessor released in 2011 (78K debut week, 360K total)
  • However, Unlimited World Red only had a ~30% sell-through rate, so we can estimate around 278,500 copies were shipped

The super-hit Monster Hunter 4 reaches 3 million sales in approximately two months

  • With 22,876 sales this week, Monster Hunter 4 reaches 3.02 million
  • Sales exclude the downloadable version

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data tracked by Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories, Inc., a division of Kadokawa Corporation. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
1) Unlike any other tracker, Dengeki gives us software numbers for Top 50 sales so we can track low-performing titles for a longer period of time
2) Unlike the others, Dengeki gives us total software sales for every platform, so we can track the relative health of platform software ecosystems
3) Dengeki is a respected sales tracker with 5 consecutive years of being reported each week in GAF threads

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
1) Dengeki is just as accurate as Media Create and Famitsu. Just because each tracker has quirks and natural deviations from the others doesn't mean one is inherently superior to the rest.
2) Dengeki is the tracker most unfamiliar to GAF / the public, and sometimes people confuse lack of dissemination with inaccuracy in sales figures
3) The amount of retail stores Dengeki tracks is similar to Media Create and Famitsu

Here are the differences between the trackers:

Media Create:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Media Create Co., Ltd.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sometimes presents sell-through figures
+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
+ Distinguishes between Vita and Vita TV
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, Inc.
+ Tracks about 3,600 retail stores / chains
+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through ranges for all titles
+ Has the most historical data available for GAFfers
+ Tracks download cards
+ Releases first (at the same time as Media Create)
- Does not distinguish between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not distinguish between Vita and Vita TV
- Does not report total software sales

Dengeki:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories, Inc.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 50 software sales with numbers
+ Top 3 software sales per platform
+ Total software sales per platform
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through figures for a few titles
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
+ Distinguishes between Vita and Vita TV
- Inconsistent data reporting over the years
- Does not track download cards
- Releases nearly 24 hours after Media Create / Famitsu

Initial Super Mario 3D World shipment shows that retailers have given up on the Wii U.

Barely 200.000 units for a main Super Mario title released a few weeks before holiday season, that's on par with Pikmin 3. And what's even sadder, only half of those units were sold.

:lol This game better have some major legs.

If it's like Unlimited Cruise SP (started lower than UWR, now it's at 360k according to Dengeki), it'll sell for a good amount of time, and Holidays will surely help. On Amazon, the price hasn't collapsed yet. Actually, yesterday it was unavailable till 30th, and today it's just sold from third party sellers, at 23% discount (one of the normal ones for games from Amazon; let alone from third parties).

Instead, Daigasso is already at 42%, last I checked. Sold by third party like UC, but not a great sign.

EDIT: 3DS increased by 14k due to One Piece, while Wii U had a 5k increase with Mario. One Piece moving more Nintendo hardware than Mario, strange times indeed...

I doubt LR will ever sell out that initial shipment, especially since the game is supposedly pretty short. The used markets will probably be flooded by next week. The Mario shipment seems really conservative though, especially with the holidays coming up. Either retailers want to see the initial response before ordering more for the new year, or they have completely lost faith in the platform.

How many copies of Taiko are retailers going to be bargain binning?
I really don't know how Wii U is going to reach 10M lifetime at this rate :(
Globally or in Japan? For the latter, lol.

The former is entirely achievable though, even considering how poorly it's selling.

This week it only sold 13.000 with a 69% drop and there are still over 100.000 units left in stock.

26./10. [3DS] Medarot Dual: Kabuto Ver. / Kuwagata Ver. <RPG> (Rocket Company) {2013.11.14} (¥6.090) - 5.204 / 25.043 <20-40%> (-74%)

Another game that will soon hit the bargain bins.

Only a 50% sell through in 4 days doesn't really indicate that they were wrong though.

What's so strange about that? Mario didn't come with a Limited Edition for the Wii U, now, did it? That's what lead to this rise in sales for the 3DS (OPUR actually had 2 special 3DS XL). And unlike the Wii U, 3DS is a perfectly healthy system (though in that case, OP underperformed, so it's not the game itself that sold 3DS).

Perfo

Thirteen flew over the cuckoo's nest
So it looks like LR shipped about 450k while Mario shipped about 200k.

Anyway all was expected apparently. The shipment was way smaller than before, the % similar to XIII-2 too so they must've seen that coming. Probably the game is already a profit right now without even taking into consideration more sales and the western sales. Problem is I'm not sure it'll hit 1ml ww so easily lol. I just hope like I said many times that this will no stop them from trying again something different with the brand without relying only on AAAAAAAA+ titles or CCCCCCC- 3ds/iOS ones. We need more mid-budget FFs like LR. Or at least Perfo needs them because I don't wanna buy games not called FFs every month. More FF -> more happiness.

I don't understand how the PS3 can sell that much software yet move just like 10-11k units/week.
