Deadly Premonition PC port locked to 720p, no gfx options (nm, Durante fixed it)

Mellahan

Concerned about dinosaur erection.
In addition to what was said above, try disabling borderless fullscreen if you've enabled it. The game crashes instantly for me with it's turned on but works great (with all dsfix features functioning properly) when turned off.

Worked like a charm. Thanks.

A shot in the dark here but does anyone have the files that were modified by the patch, from before it was patched? Maybe I can just play in offline mode if I can replace those.

That's good news, should be easy enough to fix. I'll have a look this evening hopefully.

I got the dpfix to work with the new patch, when I used the setting disableJoystick 0

Worked for some other people too.

If I use disableJoystick 1, the screen is black and nothing happens.

Well, if they fixed joystick (gamepad) support that setting is redundant anyway. I'll remove it from the next version.

I didn't have much time to play yesterday but controller seemed to work ok. I never played the original game, so I am not sure if it works like it should. At least it didn't steer to the right all the time when I was driving or cycle through my weapons.

ooooh ... they just released another patch :) wow, that was FAST!! :)

Hi again everyone,

Another minor update has been released, following feedback from yesterday's patch:

Version 1.01b
– Fixed case where movable objects became misaligned when pushed repeatedly from a specific direction (numerous places but, in particular, the statue puzzle in Mr Stewart's house).

Again, thanks for your patience and support.

So I've just finished watching the 1st season of Twin Peaks and now I want to play this game. Someone talk me out of this, please.
I don't think I have the strength to resist a possible daily deal.

Nice to see those updates being released, I can finally play the game from the comfort of my sofa.

Why would anyone talk you out of it? The game's wonderful, the more people play it the better!

exactly - this game is AMAZING ... absolutely worth playing :) and you don't even have to wait for a daily deal ... it's already at 50% off :) I seriously doubt it'll go lower than that :p

As always, wait for the final day before buying any non-daily from Steam.

I am waiting till it either pops up as a daily or that final day. So excited to play it again!

I finished the game a few days ago. I rarely complete games anymore these days at all. I usually get bored as soon as I'm done tweaking it to death. Most games nowadays are really bland or hold your hand far too much. But this one... man it got me hooked 'til the end in spite of all the bugs and quirks. Some parts are incredibly slow and bland too but the overall experience is quite unforgettable yes

By the way do you guys know of any similar game ?
I might replay Silent Hill 2...

Is the Windows 98 thing still necessary?

EDIT: nvm I've got the black screen thing too, even without DPFix. I guess I'm not playing it any time soon.

EDIT2: nvm again it's working. I guess I'm playing this right away

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I'll spend 10+ hours applying mods and tweaks, play part of the beginning of a game, say "this looks excellent, and these mods are awesome" and then never play it again! It's like as I get old, I buy games to fix them up instead of playing.

Anyway, you won't find many games like the unique gem that is DP. But since you're asking... maybe Shenmue?

So, can I now safely buy the game on Steam or are there still many bugs?

It's gonna be a crap shoot. Prior to the latest patches, the game ran fine with Durante's fix, after the patches my game is broken. Using the mod or not, even did a clean reinstall of the game, it now runs between 5-10 fps at all times. Game is turning into my first digital coaster unless Durante's next update somehow fixes it.

Edit: Oh oh!! So after typing that up, I decided to check the steam forums again to see if others were having the problem I've been having. No such luck it seems but, someone was having an issue and another user suggested putting the game into win98 compatibility mode. So I figured what the heck I'll try that, I go to the .exe compat tab and noticed, even after a clean reinstall of the game it was already checked for win98 compat. So, I turned that off and boom, 60fps in game and cutscenes back to 24-30 fps now.

I don't remember ever turning that on, on the previous installation and I definitely didn't turn it on in this one, so why in the world would it be on.

Game works great now: still some crashes (that crash-while-driving thing is still there) but it's fast and semi-stable at times and luckily DPFix works. Of course it's an awesome game too so that's a plus.

You turned on compatibility mode for your previous installation and forgot about it. The Windows OS stores this setting within the registry for your particular executable file name; it does not get removed after an uninstall. Manually removing the check for running in compatibility mode will turn off the compatibility setting in the registry as well.

Every single time I try to enter
George's house
my game crashes. I've tried Win 98 compatibility, renaming d3d9.dll, nothing.

This sucks. I can tell I'm towards the end of the game. I already have like an extra six hours or something from replaying parts due to crashes. I guess my system does not like this game at all.

Have you rebooted? It sounds silly but it's the only thing that works, I learned it the hard way. Verifying Steam cache also does... Something? System specs?

I'm getting terrible FPS no matter what settings I choose with dpfix after the latest patch. Anyone know of a fix for this, or just wait for Durante to update it?

Heads up to anyone who might be reading this thread, RadeonPro seems to cause near instant CTD with dpfix right now. Disabling RadeonPro API detection for DP.exe through RP compatibility settings will fix it, but then you won't get triple buffering or whatever you were using RP for in the first.

@Durante, in case you are curious, I tested some version out and tracked this crash down to 0.8 and newer.
0.7.1 and older works without any issues with RadeonPro running in the background. I tried fiddling with the options you added on 0.8 to see if enabling/disabling them would matter, didn't have any luck.

I've experienced glitches which resulted in CTDs w/ DPfix 0.8 and 0.9.1 myself, with my Nvidia setup (look at the images from my bug report post). Again, DPfix 0.7.1 seems to be the most stable release at the moment.

RadeonPro related crash is likely to do with D3D manipulation, the game crashes even before the new company logos start rolling. I guess "near instant" is really closer to instant. :p It's mentioned in the readme that such thing may cause crashing, but I figured I should report that it used to work just fine, just in case there something that can be done.

Definitely worth reporting. All bugs are worth reporting.

Has anyone been able to get a wireless 360 controller to work with this game? For some reason the only way I can even get it to recognize I have a controller is to plug one in USB. Never had a problem with my wireless controller before this game.

Yes, my wireless 360 controller works fine with the game.

On the fence about getting this. I'm a huge Twin Peaks fan and haven't played the game before...is the hassle to get this working worth it? Also, is all the fixes I need to get it going in the OP?

Much thanks!

Yes it's an extraordinary game -litterally- I miss playing it now that I finished it last week. Read the last pages for impressions or visit metacritics as this thread is more about Dpfix actually : )

Well I applied the latest patch and now the game crashes with DPFix 0.9.1 right after the splash screen even with disableJoystick 0 set in DPfix.ini
I might be an isolated case though as most people don't seem to have any issues once disableJoystick 0 has been set

...Oh I haven't rebooted yet... so maybe that'll be it...

EDIT : nevermind, rebooting fixed the issue. This game, lol

I released an update which should improve compatibility with the latest version of the game and fix some minor problems.

  • Various adjustments to improve compatibility with version 1.01b of Deadly Premonition
  • Removed the "disableJoystick" option, as it is now superfluous (the bug it was designed to work around was fixed by the developers!)
  • Made AA apply in some circumstances where it did not before, like the in-game menu
  • The distribution version now includes (optional) logging, to make debugging problems easier

The RadeonPro/D3D related crash I had with 0.8 and 0.9.1 was resolved with 0.9.5 as well.
It seems like it might be almost time to actually play the game now. :D

Still bummed that they added all the unskippable company logos and such with the patch though.

Woot, thanks Durante! I think I can finally begin streaming this on Rely On Horror. The crashes and zero controller support kept me away. Now that those are fixed, I can play the game with enhancements. Yay!

I'm getting strange lighting flickering with the new version. Couldn't narrow it down to a setting, it seems that as long as I have dpfix in the game folder, it happens.
I recorded a clip, but I'm not sure if it shows super well in it.

To be sure, this is unique to this version and didn't occur with any previous version? And what OS/graphics card/etc are you using?

I see exactly what you mean. This looks exactly like a bug which was related to how the rendertarget pyramid is reduced to generate a value for tone mapping. However, the last time I had any problem like that was on 0.4 or so.

Are you using any of the DoF enhance settings?

Aside from changing the resolution, I'm using the default ini to test it out so everything's at default or disabled. Tested 0.7.1, 0.8 and 0.9.1, didn't see the flickering there.
While doing that I also noticed that real fullscreen also seems broken for me with 0.9.5, probably not related?

Would it help if I enabled some level of logging and got that log to you?

I was just having the same issue. I disabled 'Full Screen mode' in DPLauncher.exe and then I enabled borderlessFullscreen in DPfix and it worked

There are a few threads about this on the steam community, there seems to be some workarounds although they don't sound perfect.:

I haven't actually finished he game yet on PC myself, so I can't help you any more than that.

I'm astounded the developers have not fixed or even acknowledged this issue. Some people have gotten around it by playing in Windows 98 Compatibility Mode. For others (like me), this setting had no effect. The only way I was able to beat the game was to lock-on with the submachine gun (this moves York's aim to a general, lowered position). Afterwards, aim as close as possible in the doll's direction, and just spray and pray. You will eventually get a shot in, allowing you to finish the game.

There are boxes that absolutely cannot be shot at with this limited aiming bug on PC, but at least the game is beatable.
