Indie Games [December] Now Voting - Post 741!

Tried it soooo often, but it never clicked for me. Dunno what my problem with that game is.
Did you enjoy Lugaru? I recently tried that again recently and wanted more of the same (but better), so maybe I was just primed to enjoy Overgrowth already.

What aspects didn't click? The combat? I could see how some might not like the combat, since it's not the deepest system but IMO it has that Arkham Asylum "simple to control but fun and awesome to watch" element to it

It's going into Beta at least, with indie games it can kind of be a grey area between 'open beta' and 'release' (that was certainly the case with Terraria).

Also, OP, the Starbound beta will be on Windows, Mac and Linux, according to the developers. I noticed you had "????" for platforms.

Awesome, thanks.

Devs have already outlined their plan/timeframe for the beta

http://playstarbound.com/how-the-beta-is-going-to-work/
1) Progenitor
Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:
- You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code
- You enjoy providing feedback
- You want to leave your mark on the game
- You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:
- Bugs infuriate you
- You don’t like spoilers
- You can’t stand losing your save
- You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.
---
2) Automaton
Stage 2 will be largely feature complete. You’ll still find the odd bug but they’re unlikely to be game breaking and the chance of you losing your character or save is minimal. The main quest line won’t be in yet but the sandbox experience will be near complete. All sectors of the galaxy will be available including sector X (End game content). Much of the focus in this stage will be on bug fixing, optimization and balance.

DO take part in this stage if:
- You enjoy reporting bugs/bug hunting
- You have a low spec computer and want to make sure the game is optimized for it
- You want a complete sandbox experience
- You tried to wait a bit longer but failed

DO NOT take part in this stage if:
- You want to play through the main quest line
- You want to be a Novakid
---
3) Bio-organic
Stage 3 is largely about prepping for v1.0, this means finishing up the main quest line and implementing the post beta content. i.e. the Novakids, fossils. By the time stage 3 is complete Starbound should be ready to launch as a finished game. Worry not however, we plan to keep adding new content for at least a year after release, perhaps a lot longer.

DO take part in this stage if:
- You want to give feedback on what will become the finished game

DO NOT take part in this stage if:
- You’d rather wait a litttttle bit longer and play the polished final version
- You’re still busy playing Pokémon X/Y

Hear, hear.

I beat the demon king on my third run, lets see what the game offers after that and whether the other options (classes, etc) will be enough to keep me engaged.

But in the end there is still the hard mode, which probably should be considered the true challenge anyway.

Edit:

Well there is my reason to replay the game with every class.

There's plenty to find, include the ability to generate your own dimensions using a word of your choosing. Also, don't forget that there are some things you'll never see in lower difficulties, and a TON of endings to get.

Sounds good, I'll definitely play it again soon. Looking forward to it, marvellous little game.

Fancy Skulls is the next feature on IndieGameStand

Highly recommended. I'll repost my impressions here:

Was recently updated with new enemies, new items, new room layouts, etc.

Edit: also changed mana to a recharging meter. I preferred the original set up but this works as well

Curious about this one. I like ToG and HEAVYBULLETS a lot, but from just the flash demo of FancySkulls it didn't grab me like those did. Is the newest version really that much of an improvement over the previous demo?

It is a fun little game and $2 makes it an easy impulse buy, hopefully more people check it out.

You guys should make sure to hop over in the One Way Heroics thread once I have it up to post some impressions. Might have get it done tomorrow, its definitely one of those games that deserves to be spread farther.

From IndieStatik:
I’ve played the demo a couple of times, and in comparison to the alpha version that you can pay for, the demo is lacking a lot. There’s only a handful of enemies, and only three levels to shoot your way through before having to start again. The main problem is the lack of enemies, though, as it makes the game very easy, whereas the more recent builds of Fancy Skulls are not easy.

The basic features are in place, at least. You’ll start with the pretty decent revolver and can collect coins, health and power-ups if you clear the rooms you’re locked in. Enemies don’t come at you until you’ve entered the room and a highlighted area within. You can still visit the shop and gamble coins for potentially big prizes. You can get new weapons, like the shotgun, submachine gun and rocket launcher. It’s all there still.

But there’s a significant lack of challenge present, and given that Fancy Skulls’s visual design is very minimalistic, and not in the most attractive way, either, and there’s no music, it makes the game seem quite bland, indeed. I can say quite happily that the most aggressive enemies, and those that turn rooms into first-person bullet-hell in the later versions of the game, do make it much more compelling, so don’t judge the game on this demo.

The problem Fancy Skulls has mostly is that it’s not enough just to be a first-person roguelike-like shooter. There’s Paranautical Activity and Tower of Guns that are a bit more exciting, fast-paced and characterful. That’s not to say the weird, estranged enemies and unusual visuals of Fancy Skulls is lacking character, but this demo does lack a display of excitement, I feel.

I think the game does the FPS roguelike shtick in cool different way than Heavy Bullets and ToG

Any impressions of Bad Bots?
Just saw it on Desura and then noticed it was only a few bucks on Steam. Looks fun, but trailers can be deceiving
I wasn't a huge fan. I found Intrusion 2 to be the better game if you are trying to stick with that genre and it regularly goes on sale as well. Both games have a demo on Steam so you can check them out and make sure they run ok for you at the same time.

Sure thing. I will try to tear myself away from Zelda tonight and put some more time in to the game before the thread goes up.

Did anyone play FAMAZE? It's quite an addictive little roguelike. I helped him test it what seems like ages ago and it was finally released last month.

Also related he's doing a roguelike contest and sign ups are ending soon. If you want to enter you have to purchase the tileset, though he does at least provide a promo code for a discount. It's a pretty good tileset though, and since I enjoyed Famaze so much it wasn't a big deal sending a few bucks his way.

I made a little progress video on my entry for his contest here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqBhXVEsRqU. It's my first roguelike and since I'm never played a roguelike beyond the action real-time combat ones and I've never made a 2d game so I just decided to make what I was familiar with. Doomish inspired gameplay with roguelike design elements. Fairly proud of my progress considering it's only been 8 days.

Just realized that a few more days and I'd have been a member here for a year. That's probably the most I've ever been active on a forum. Technically I've been registered at IGN forums since '09 but I don't even post there any more. Before GAF, most forums, I'd be active for a month or two, mainly up until the game releases. Splinter Cell, The Last of Us, State of Decay, Far Cry 3, I was active in those forums and then haven't been back in a while. I barely frequent Gamefaqs anymore, only if I need a quick answer to a question.

So yeah, I'll be here for the long run. And to Toma and the rest of the regulars here, thanks for all your help when I was just PC gaming neophyte a few months and for maintaining these threads

WELP. Was playing and enjoying Fakteur, then accidentally quit and it didn't save my progress. I'll start over at some point. Very interesting concept, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out over the whole game. The amount of time biking between houses started to feel a bit tedious to me, though, it'd be nice if the environment changed a little or something.

The auto-save should be enough to let you restart where you quit by just click on your profile. But we didn't have the time to test it much, so there's still the possibility that it doesn't work (save was added like only a week before release :s ).

And thank you for the feedbacks :)

Just a heads up: I'm working on a Starbound OT

What do you think of these?
Starbound | OT | Yes, that’s a space hobo
Starbound | OT | So it's like Terraria...in space!

Any suggestions?

This popped up on my Facebook feed earlier, looks like it could be interesting. Loads of FTL vibes.

http://galactic-princess.com/

To survive in space you will need to find the best equipment: powerful engines, generators, deadly weapons, medic system, recherch labs, control systems, more or less clever droids...and much more!

But the most important is not what you get, it is what you do.

As a captain you must define your priorities:
- your crew
- your ship
- your cargo
- your quest

Make your choices, forge your destiny.

Yeah, I checked after quitting and it says "New Game" on each profile, so... >.>

As far as the biking goes, I like the pacing that it gives to the game, but it could use at least some variations in the scenery or something to make it a little less repetitive.

Tiny Barbarian look neat, will check that out ASAP.

Downloaded Desura earlier, going to try an play more of these indie titles.
Got some keys if you're interested. I've tried trading them on Reddit, but no one's ever interested. Keys for Last Knight, Rktcr, Out There Somewhere

Edit: Maia is on Early Access

Holy crap guys, I missed the freaking voting. I feel like such a piece of garbage.

Luckily you guys chose the Stanley Parable, so I won't have to cry too long.

Did anyone 100% the game?

I'll pick one and put it on the show!*

Anyone who has a One Way Heroics gif at hand? Best would be the overworld + battles or something.

Firstly apologies if this isn't the right place for this. I have been following an indie space exploration game called Rodina. It is being released on the 13th December. It won't be "finished" by December but it looks like the guy is going the same route Minecraft went ie releasing and giving free updates. More info here :-

Rodina looks very cool. I'm getting a Noctis + Star Fox vibe. I'll definitely be interested in trying it when it's released.
