Who remembers this classic? They keep fighting legal battles to get a DVD released but was just curious if there were any fans here.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
I eagerly await some sort of complete collection.

I would even buy a viva variety release.

I loved The State, I've always wondered why Comedy Central hasn't tried airing it... maybe it's the same as the legal battle with the DVDs you mentioned.

The State rocked. The ongoing skits I remember most were Doug ("I'm Doug, and I'm outta he-he-he-e-e-r-r-r-e-e") and Lewey ("I wanna dip my BALLS in it!"). It was nice to see some of them continued to do comedy Michael Ian Black on 'Ed' and some of ther others on 'Reno 911.'

Ah, good times. I loved the pool skit where they eat and then don't wait to let their food settle and everyone drowns. Classic.

And Michael Ian Black rocks! I watch VH1's "I love the 90's (80's, etc)" because of him.

I only saw it a few times, but when I did I loved it.

Oh, and fans of this might like the KIds in the Hall, also. Seasons 1 and 2 of that are out on DVD, and they hold up after all this time-- still hilarious.

I LOVED this show

I wish some one would air it again

one of my favorite sketch comedy shows EVER

"I LOOK LIKE A FUCKING BLUEBERRY!!!!!"

and yeah what are these legal battles? with MTV? if it's with MTV that wouldn't surprise me as they suck so much ass now adays

Everytime I see the sticky "January NBA Season Thread - A No Puddin Zone" thread, I think of the State sketch where the two guys rub their asses in the car trunk filled with pudding.

I always assumed that the licensing problems had to do with all the music used throughout episodes, similar to the issues with the Beavis and Butthead dvds.

How much pudding? Did it have any sort of dollar amount?

Yeah they have a central site, but it just confirms the same thing about the legal issues. Hopefully something will happen soon.

It seems like it would take an act of god to get a DVD release this late in the game.

(But what they don't know is that me and god are like that ! *crosses fingers and rides off on a harley*)

"you better watch your back" - jesus

:lol

the state fucking owns.

i love the skit where the family kills and eats muppets for dinner!

the best skit ever is the fast food skit where the dude from Reno 911 is taking the order and he is with a co worker and it goes like this:

Cashier: may i help you sir

Customer: Yeah can i get a grape soda?

Cashier (to worker #2): HEY CARL!!!! GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASS AND GET THE MAN A GRAPE SODA FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD!

then he calmly makes it

Cashier: Anything else sir?

Customer: Uh... chicken sandwich please...

Cashier: ... CHICKEN SANDWICH CARL!!!!!!! WHATTAYA DEAF!?

Cashier (to customer): Did you.. .ask for small soda??

Customer: No but... i didn't really say so

Casher (to carl): <flicking a little grape soda on his face> If the MAN wanted a SMALL grape soda he would've ASKED for a small grape soda... AND WHERE THE HELL'S HIS CHICKEN SANDWICH!?

well and so on, it is hilarious. i have it in .mov format if anyone is interested

The State rocks my ass, and yours. Hard. I ordered a bootleg four-DVD set of The State off of eBay and am VERY HAPPY with it. Yeah, it was all taped off of TV but whatever.

Also, back in highschool days, my friends put the Carl skit into a group of scenes they performed the spring of their senior year. Classic.

"It's time.... for two hundred.... and forty dollars... worth of pudding. awwwwwwww yyeaaah."

James Dixon: Power Guidance Counselor -

"Most people live under the assumption that high school is supposed to take 'four years.' I've gotten kids out in 2 - I got one kid out in a semester. It's all about finessing: greasing the wheels"

And FrenchMovieTheme, please if you can send me a link or message me about that .mov clip.

Give me the fever, into the fire. Taking it higher and higher!

They released a collection a while back on VHS, (mostly skits with no licensed music were picked, as that seems to be the reason that the series wont get a DVD release). I think it was called "Skits and Stickers: Stickers not included" or something.

Anyway, some more State quote goodness:

"Alls fair in love and war Timmy!"

"Well which one is this Dad?"

(whispered ) "Both"

"Bye mailbox!" (the taco mailman was one of the funniest skits of all time)

"I was under the impression we were playing for money or prizes, not orphaned children.."

"Looks like someone forgot to read the fine print!"

And yeah The State is like Kids in the Hall minus the homo cross dressing crap.

There actually was a lot of that... you don't think the one female member played every female character in skits?

Again, what's the preventing a DVD release? What exactly are these legal battles?
Supposedly, it's something to do with MTV. I have no real details.

From the-state.com, circa 8/1/04..

STATE DVD *UPDATE* AUGUST 1, 2004
Finally, at long last, the members of The State are working in conjunction with MTV Home Video to make the ultimate, REAL, DVD collection of The State. We going back to the original master tapes and loading it with great extras too, including commentary, interviews, unaired material, etc. Save your money! Stop buying bootlegs! We don't know when exactly this new DVD will be released. *update 4/14/04: it looks like we've finally broken through 95% of the red tape on The State DVD. Deals are being closed as we speak and we hope to have a release date for you soon. **update 8/1/04: Apparently there have been some regime changes and more unexpected legal delays, but MTV tells us the project is still alive and they want to release the DVD in the next six months. As always as soon as they tell us something, we'll tell you.

It was because of all of the licensed music used in the show, the need permission from the artist for every single track used to be able to release the DVD and sell it. They also need to pay the artist for use of the song, it gets costly considering every scene on every episode of the State has a different song from the early nineties practically (they had permission to use the songs when the show originally aired because MTV has permission to use those songs however they want, so long as it's not for profit).

I've got every episode burned on CD. A while ago, someone hosted each episode as mpegs or something. Quality is quite low, obviously from a recorded VHS tape, but good enough to bask in the greatness of the State once again. Of course, I have all the Stella clips and The State on CBS (damn CBS to hell). Great stuff from beginning to end. At least we have Reno 911 now. Fantastic show, but I'd take a State sketch comedy over it any day. Where's Kevin Allison, Ken Marino, etc. (other than cameos)?

My brother went to see Stella last year and bought the DVD. Everyone whos watched it laughs their asses off, and the commentary is pretty good too.
