Media Create Sales: Week 49, 2013 (Dec 02 - Dec 08)

Wii U holiday bump was expected, and I am glad to see it doing well, but the real question is can it carry that into 2014? Hopefully it can since 2014 is looking like a great year in terms of software for Wii U.

I am also surprised at how small the holiday bump for Vita is right now, I honestly expected it to go a little higher than that.

is the dqx expansion just an expansion or is it bundled with the original game?

1. i can't believe an expansion would actually bump the numbers for the wii u
2. i can't believe there were that many dqx units sold on the wii u in the first place.

Two months ago people belived PS4 and Xbox will strugle in west as every major game they had was also playable on X360/PS3 and exclusives were weak.

Games aren't reason why people are buying consoles in launch period.
Again, Japan is not console-centric. I think people are jumping the gun by using what happened in the West as the gold standard, and remember, we're still not sure how well those sales will even hold in the New Year.

Well if you are arguing the PS4 could have a great launch, I would potentially agree. If you think that it will sustain 15k+ sales for a long time after....well I need to see a lot more games for that because cross gen games will not cut it in Japan

Wait, are you implying I'm salty? If so that couldn't be further from the truth, especially when it comes to the Chibi art style.

Not really, but you must admit the way you phrased it sounded kinda like someone who didn't like hat scenario.

The West is still very much console-centric, though.

The west and Japan are very different though. Japan is not obsessing over better graphics so cross gen seems like a horrible strategy for a launch in Japan.

you are both right, but I also think that Vita struggles and the performance of some games (i.e.: tales games, mosou games, etc...) on PSP/Vita/PS3 could make us think about a possible shift of some "traditioanlly sony-centric japanese game/genre" from portable to home console.
This, in addition to a lower price compared to PS3 debut, the absence of a "game changer" competitors as the Wii back in the days, no actual big MS Jrpg deal, could leave the home segment totally in the hands of PS4, this time around.

I still think that the home market will decrease significantly compared to the prevous gen (as the portable one is doing, btw...), but that PS4 could be able to repeat PS3 LTD numbers.

Cross-gen primarily makes sense if you think a notable portion of your audience will be on PS4 for one reason or another.

That's probably a pretty small set of games though.

It still needs cross gen though I believe, otherwise the PS4's lack of backward compatibility will damage it badly. Considering it's announced support.

Oh I don't doubt that it will match the PS3 by the end. I just think the 6 month post launch period will be near Vita levels if not slightly better until the bigger games start to come out.

PS4 will sell on hype alone, then when hype dies, it will have the games.

If Vita didn't sell on hype in handheld land, why will the PS4?

in negative nintendo news, the 3ds just isn't doing as hot as it should with the year's two biggest releases under its belt. you'd think they'd have the 2ds out there. maybe sometime in 2014 to help grow the userbase, because there won't be a ton of hardware-moving games. not like 2013 at least.

also holy crap the market soundly rejected the vita tv. i don't think people in japan really want small consoles like nintendo and sony expected. i can't believe vita sales went up while vita tv sales decreased. and during the holidays. it really is the psp go of the vita line.

If I understand that correctly, it should be just the Expansion; it seems that DQX on the Wii U was around 75k + counting digital sales, plus it could be that some Wii owner swifted to Wii U, keeping their account for the MMORPG transfering it from the Wii to the Wii U

if that's the case, then dqx on the wii u has a really active fanbase and the bump in numbers could probably be attributed to the holiday versus the release of the expansion pack.

Oh right, yeah I can see that. I was just kidding around because it's a bit of a trend(Miku for example). As a fan of the Crystal Chronicles games(and 4HOL/BDFF) it would be hypocritical to complain about Chibi spinoffs.

Yeah these numbers are pretty disappointing. They don't have a chance of matching 2012's YTD. It might be time to drop the 2ds soon after the new year to keep whatever momentum they do have.

They're very clearly joking. That's not to say God Eater 3DS isn't going to happen, but people on here are just having fun.

I think it's perfectly fine to discuss why God Eater on 3DS makes sense.

Since PS2 and PS3 both succeeded primarily on third-party efforts, I can't help but look at the decline from PS2 and PS3 and assume that PS4 cannot save the console market on its own. The PS4 will be successful since developers will have to hit that platform for their big Western efforts, but Japanese publishers will move further onto mobile.

Nintendo's IPs did well on console this gen so it would help if they were on a healthy console. They aren't.

Ouch, Vita TV.

But honestly, who didn't see that coming? Is it not clear that Japan is almost exclusively into handhelds? Why would you take a (struggling) handheld, reduce game compatibility, remove the screen, and release it in Japan?

Wii U's number is not insane but good and most of all not anticipated by anyone to be that high up even with DQX or Holiday bump. I mean it has been doing worse than GC and GC sales for this exact week in 2002 was like 39k, so in that context those numbers are great IMO.

I am pretty sure SM3DW will have very strong legs on word of mouth alone. Some posters here said that was not going to be the case (metalslimer), we still need to wait but I am confident it will sell well in time.

Sony is giving them alternative of doing Vita game and porting to PS3/PS4 like Natural selection.

Are you seriously comparing the incredible/mainstream/developer hype the PS4 is getting to the nonexistent/gaf Vita hype?, for real?

as I said, PS4 will easily win the competition on the home segment and repeat PS3 LTD numbers, but...mainstream PS4 hype in Japan? Right now?
I'm not sure about it.

Japanese developers are backing the Vita way more than the PS4. Take off the next gen goggles and see the forest for the trees.

If it's a discussion, yeah. I think it's an error to assume that God Eater would do well on the 3DS just because Monster Hunter has. It's more anime-styled and story-focused.

Nintendo spent a lot of effort last gen in building casual IPs, Touch Generations and the like. When they've been releasing in this gen they've put out unimpressive numbers. I think it's obvious that the DS' expanded is gone. If they can be brought back, it would take more novelty than we've seen so far.

I don't think PS4 will downright bomb in Japan, but people are being a bit too optimistic about it. It has basically zero games that appeal to Japan right now.

But why would they do that? They're ditching the 3DS by far the most popular platform in Japan for mobile. That's not gonna change anything.

What might change things is if PDZ sells gangbusters enough. It would help prove the viability of cross handheld mobile games.

In Japan? There is barely anything announced for PS4 from Japanese 3rd parties.....

yakuza and mgsv will probably drive sales. the playstation name is strong enough to sell on its own (there's definitely a playstation fanbase if it can make the vita a force).

outside of that though... well, i think it's pretty telling there's no hot shots golf on the machine, for starters.

I honestly doubt it'll hit PS3 LTD numbers easily. People here are going to get a big reality shock when, a week or two after launch, sales plummet just like the Wii U's did.

Vita is a force? What am I reading?

Well this isn't exactly true. It's just that they are either cross gen or are too far out to matter. FF15, MGS5, and KH3 will obviously drive PS4 sales are good bit but none of these are 2014 games

I don't think they will drop that fast or hard though. It will be sub 10k in 2 months though unless Sony has a blowout of new game announcements soon.

You named one game MGSV could come at least a year from launch. Which is why ground zeroes is even a thing.

That's a Kadokawa game, correct? I think smaller publishers are less likely to care that a platform is underperforming, but they're also less likely to stop the platform from doing so. It will be the major publishers that push even further to mobile.

This is the 3DS's best year for software by far and yet it's going to underperform 2012 by a good amount. It's doing good, but I'm sure Nintendo expected more. They likely will miss the 3DS forecast, so not only will they have to drop the Wii U forecast they will have to drop the 3DS forecast.

A TV show, a manga that runs in two different magazines, toys, and more. Then it sells less than 7.6k, not the best investment, Capcom.

I'm a little surprised at the Tomodachi Collection number. I would have certainly expected it to top 2 million.

Hasn't Japan's KH love cooled down quite a lot? Also, I'd say those not being 2014 games is quite an issue. ViitaU have shown you have to get big early, or it becomes increasingly difficult.

Or rather by your first Christmas in the 3DS's case.
