NPD Sales Results for November 2013 [Up3: Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, 3DS, Wii U]

A more up to date system, power wise, for Nintendo next console meant nothing for third party. Look at the Wii U and see how much 3rd party games it is getting from PS360 in 2013-2014. I don't know how Nintendo can solve this but I sure hope they do find a new ground.

The Wii U was flawed from the get go because coming in as late as it did studios already have their talent force divided up for platform work. They aren't suddenly going to hire more people or shift significant numbers to toss the Wii U into the mix with PS360.

Nintendo needed to be in earlier so that resource shifting could be done reasonably. Even with their next console if they emergency rush it now it will be 2-3 years into Xbone and PS4 and imo too late again for development resource splits.

Gaming Industry has basically become Hollywood but much worse:

And Need For Speed and WWE had releases as well this year, but they didn't end top ten.

The "gaming" community are content buying this year new iteration of the same old shit.

True sadness...

I bought 3D World day one and like it quite a bit, meanwhile I own nothing from the NPD top 10 but come on, it's a little crude to be defending a Mario game with this kind of line.

It's not some hyper innovative, risk taking little misunderstood angel. It's a good Mario game that uses the same general formula and thematic as every other Mario game, even if you want to dice down the subtleties in the general layout it's very much 3D Land 2 (which is very fine)

Lament it not selling well because it's a good game, not because you need to prop up a superiority complex over others.

I still remember that Nintendo Direct with the FExSMT and X announcements when it seemed like Nintendo would turn it all around...

There is something they can do immediately. Bring to the market a pack without the tablet and drop the price by 100$. Do that at the same time that Mario Kart 8 comes out. I think a relaunch of the system under these conditions may be possible.

Second option is to scratch everything, make a new system and bring all the incoming games to that new system. I wouldn't change much the specs, but I would target the casual again with motion controls once again.

Option three, sort of an option 1 plus. Drop it to 199, bundle a few games, include codes for shit on the E shop, and drop it when MK or Smash drops.

It's bullshit. It's pretty much a lie. Ignore the PR, focus on the actual numbers.
PS4 is the best and fastest selling console. Simple as that.

This. They couldn't even beat the day 1 sales of the PS4 and they're spinning based on speed, it's just too funny. :)

So MS lost its home turf to Sony, got whipped elsewhere in the world, yet still spin the numbers to have a better average per day.

Good comedy

Yup, and wow at those software numbers for PS4.

Second best-launch of all time is a wake up call? For a $500 console?

I think MS can hit the snooze button.

Wow. Benderlaugh.gif

If by snooze button you mean they can continue to fall behind in their only real market then sure. And if they lose or even just barely keep up here in the US they are going to be creamed WW since it took a massive US lead to offset how far behind they were in the rest of the world despite everything going right for them at the beginning of last gen.

LOL, right. Nintendo said 9 million by March. What are they smoking?

WiiU is at like 4 million right now, right? They would have to sell a million a month just to reach that, right?

iwata sat in the darkened office. he had tried everything. it was over, he had lost. where had he gone wrong? everything had seemed to be going right up until the launch and it had all unraveled.

iwata suddenly looked up at the accursed box in front of him. the damned thing. if only... maybe...

he grabbed the wii u box and ran out of the office.

the crowd wasn't quite sure what to make of the businessman running out of the building clutching a box

"you there! stop! please... take a look at this... what do you think of this" he stammered. he produced the box.

"uh... i dunno... what is it?" "i don't like it" "whatever"

"okay. okay. now... how about THIS" cried iwata as he turned the box around and scribbled on it with a marker.

"[SUPER] Wii U 2!!"

"WOW!" "I'LL BUY TEN" "I'M TWEETING THIS RIGHT NOW! ON MIIVERSE!"

iwata's mouth curled into a grin. yes. yes. they understood

It's not like Sony and Microsoft are devouring each other's market share.

They are simply devouring the Wii one.

What's the deal with all this Dreamcast comparision? As if 'Oh it's as BAD as the Dreamcast? Wow that's REALLY bad'... Seriously? Haha what am I reading?!

Anyone who knows their stuff knows that the market is a fucking different beast than it was in 99. Doing these numbers in 2013 is absolutely shocking and frankly disturbing, people should be wondering about what this means for Nintendo/gaming moving forward instead of STILL trying to kick the Dreamcast when it's down.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I'm eager to see how the Nintendo investors react at the next investor meeting.

I'm glad I sold my stock back in late November with a healthy return is all I can say.

Nonetheless, looking forward to the investors meeting in late January and will most likely look at re-opening a position depending on their report.

will buy wii u at $99

next year

bro, the dreamcast is dead. it died a long time ago.

Super Mario 3D World is the best selling 3D Mario, considering the hardware base.

Code:
Hardware LTD Mario 3D Sales Attach Ratio

GCN 2.120.000 350.000 6,06
Wii 6.000.000 1.120.000 5,36
Wii U ~ 1.550.000 215.000 7,21

Code:
Hardware LTD Mario 3D Sales Attach Ratio

GCN 2.120.000 350.000 [B]16.5%[/B]
Wii 6.000.000 1.120.000 [B]18.7%[/B]
Wii U ~ 1.550.000 215.000 [B]13.9%[/B]
LOL Fixed your dodgy maths.

I still think that if Nintendo had gone with just safest route that is Wii with better specs (So Wii 2) they would be doing a lot better. One teraflop machine with 299$ price tag year earlier than the other consoles and there would have been more early adopters ( and some incentive to publishers port next gen games for it). Instead they went with that tablet controller and bizarre low wattage tech that costs so much to use that they are losing money with 299$ price without having major advantage over last gen consoles in terms of graphics. WiiU is just so poorly engineered.

So am I right in saying that the only good news here for the Wii-U was that Patcher was wrong?

I knew WiiU and Mario was going to perform bad after Reggie's reaction on the VGX to Geoff/Joels questioning. Not that it would take a genius to not expect bad numbers. Can't believe people were expecting 300-400k+ numbers. Was never going to happen out of nowhere. December will be utterly tragic too and I don't even want to know how bad January will be.

That sucks for Nintendo :(.
But on the other hand, most of us saw this coming, they should have too. Underpowered, confusing marketing, no revolutionary innovation.

WiiU is just toxic.

People being ecstatic that good games without absurd monetization can't sell hardware is kinda making me sad.

You shouldn't have to buy mediocre and rather expensive HW just for one or more games. I'll never understand what exclusivity does to a game that makes it so much better than any other.

I think the problem is also partly 3D World which is why I think Mario Kart and Smash will also underperform unless those turn out to be (and manage to market themselves as) something very different. As an example Pikmin 3 did ok in Japan for example and pushed a decent amount of HW.

this gets really old

This has been set in motion ever since the original Wii. They let so many IPs go dormant, and only make ones that are sure-things. (Mario, zelda, etc.) Now they've been worn out.

http://www.dromble.com/2013/12/10/nintendos-obsession-with-finding-one-game-that-can-sell-consoles/

Which is why 3Dworld and NSMB2 bombed.

The WiiU is fundamentally an unattractive hardware to the core audience and the casual audience.

One or more?

I buy every hardware for one or more games. That's what it does, it plays games.

Why are you going to bother armchair ceo-ing if you are going to suggest an idea that would A) not work and B) none of us want it?

Why would it not work?

And what does it matter if none of us want it? If we're talking strictly from a shareholder's point of view I think Nintendo investing in the mobile market is a great idea.

You know, everyone is talking about how bad the Wii U is doing, but the bigger alarm bells is how the 3DS/2DS is flat even with the huge software push and aggressive pricing strategy.

Nintendo has issues because its home console market is doing bad, but it also has its handheld consoles being under assault from smartphones and tablets and it is taking a HUGE toll on the console. In November, it SHOULD be selling gangbusters with a cheap price and Poemon X/Y, but it is not.

That should just be just as disconcerting, especially for the people who want Nintendo to have ONE console to support that is a plug in handheld console that can hook up to the TV.

I find amusing how this is being ignored. Numbers may seem good on a first look, but they aren't considering all things. Mobile menace is real and is here sooner than most thought.

No, actually it's the worst selling.

The ratios you did show you how many consoles were sold per how many copies of the game were sold. That means for every copy of SM3DW, there's 7.2 Wii U's. That's 6.2 Wii U owners that don't have the game per copy. Compare that to the Wii, where only just over 4 Wii owners didn't have SMG at its time of launch.

Real reason Nintendo doesn't sell?
Go through this thread and bathe in the schadenfreude.

I'm personally amazed anyone would want a launch Xbone Ps4 with that launch lineup.

enough salt

Back to awesome pc gaming.

Yes enjoy your PC gaming, says 1 percent of gamers (yes I'm exaggerating). I'll be busy with Killer instinct, Assassins Creed 4, NBA 2k14, Ryse, Killzone, Knack, and Battlefield and Dead Rising. What a piss poor launch lineup that over 4 million people seem to want huh? Lol

I hate to say it but it sucks to be Nintendo right now.

I mean what can you really do??

Playing me too this gen and trying to rush out a on-par system to the ps4/xbone which will undoubtedly either be barren with first party titles or see them rushed due to the switch seems like a fools gamble. People are likely to just ignore the system the same as wiiU. PS4 and bone will already have a huge lead and primary developer support.

Do you just drag this systems death crawl out for a few more years while risking further damage to your brand while you restructure?

Do you exit the console business for this gen after next year and try again in a few years trying to spearhead nextgen? Can you even afford that? Probably not.

Build a 3DS successor thats also a console hybrid?

Try and jump on the Occullus rift bandwagon and build a new console around that?

I mean honestly talk about the war chest all you want but I just don't know what they realistically do even if they spend all of that money.

220k in your second November is platform-ending bad. Imagine the drop to post-holiday sales with that trend line. I simply don't see how Nintendo salvages the Wii-U from here.

I never thought I'd say this, but Nintendo is DONE in the console business. Doesn't matter how much power or gimmicks they add to their next console, they're going to be irrelevant next to the PS5 or next Xbox and sales will continue to decline.

Nintendo sells to the core fans(aside from the Wii which attracted a lot of casuals), and that fan base is shrinking by the year. Unless they come up with a really really good idea, I don't ever see them relevant again in the console business.

Their handheld dominance is in jeopardy too with the recent surge in cell phone/tablet games.

RIP.

Nintendo caught fire in a bottle using motion
controls and casuals with the Wii. It seems like they waned to catch the core audience again with the WiiU at first, but floundered with an expensive gimmick controller and an underpowered system. In the end they target no one IMO. The hardcore audience is by and large ignoring the console because of the above and the casuals of last gen are either on cell phones or still playing Wii's.

I personally hope they call it quits and go 3rd party. The sooner the better. I would love Mario ps4
