Nintendo is reaping the seeds it sowed last generation when it prematurely killed off the Wii instead of capitalizing on its sales by expanding their software output.

No the Wii definitely overstayed its welcome. They should have definitely expanded their software stuff during the Wii generation but the failures of the WiiU are more attached to the hardware at this point.

Sony has a habit of supporting hardware long past it's viability date, just because that's what sony does.

Vita owners will probably be generally pleased with it, and it will have some kind of retail presence alongside the PS4.

It's DEFINITELY sony's last handheld though, and I don't expect any huge software titles that aren't PS2/PS3 ports of some sort.

I'm not convinced that it's their last handheld. But going forward, I think handhelds and living room consoles will be launched together, and part of the same ecosystem as complementary experiences.

The only thing I could think of Sony doing this is one that's also a phone. Like the Xperia Play, but they'd actually go all in on it since they wouldn't have also have a dedicated handheld. Though it'd probably be smart to also have a version that isn't a phone, like the iPhone/iPod Touch relationship.

LOL. I'm on my 4th can of Stella. I'm watching Terminator 2 and the NPDs. It's glorious.

Cans of Stella? Classy.

Hat tip to Sony.. for now. Very well done on their approach to core gamers which tend to be early adopters. Though personally I am more interested in December's figures to see how next gen fares during the holiday season.

Omg thank you. When someone brings up the GC as an attempt at creating a powerful console...shaped like a purse and never having performance specs officially released to brag...I feel like slapping them through the internet.
it was shaped like a lunchbox god damn it, we've been over this before

Although the Wii U's sales this month were considerably higher than Patcher's estimates (a reminder to never take him seriously), 220k is still pretty terrible. I'm not sure Nintendo can really do anything at this point. Since the ship is sinking, they need to take a drastic measure like they did the 3DS. Slash the price 1/3 like they did the 3DS -- to $199 -- eat the losses per unit sold, and hope the damn thing gains traction.

Consumers may react to the price cut like it's a clearance, but it worked for 3DS and what else can they do? When Mario Kart 8 hits, they have to do a major drop in correlation and maybe throw in some free VC Ambassador stuff to the 5 million or so existing owners.

If PS4 and Xbone were neck and neck in the US then it still would have been big news after last gen.
The fact that the PS4 outsold the Xbone in the US is pretty big news imo.

I dunno, they're doing well with the Xperia line so there could be a phone with buttons in the future as the vita's successor, or even an xperia tablet of sorts. Still, yeah, they're likely done with dedicated handhelds. Sad.

i don't really see another Xperia play as being viable. Sony makes nice hardware, but Samsung and Apple will obliterate them before they have a chance to become a serious player. lawsuits, marketing, pick your poison. They can't really compete on that level, and the Sony name doesn't really mean much in the smartphone arena.

Offering "playstation" as a PSN like streaming platform across all tablets and smartphones including iOS is the way to go if they want to compete with mobile, and Apple and Samsung will be invested in their success that way, rather than trying to crush them out of self interest.

The Nintendo brand is finally over. Maybe next decade!

It's over, period. Nintendo lost the casuals, and that's the end of their Wii U hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for Wii U. Nintendo has nothing left, nothing they have can fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for anyone, hardcore or casual, to substantially invest in a Wii U. Except if they want to play Bayonetta 2. Which will also come to PS4 at some point.

Microsoft and Sony took the last reason away that anyone would NEED to own a WiiU over a PS4 or Xbox one(except Miiverse LOL GAMING), and the cavalcade of tiny titles that will be nice but won't stir up any sales is not going to salvage the underpowered non-entity that was Wii U.

There may be some hardcore gamers that stick around. Some did it for PS3 too. But the last bell tolled. Maybe next decade.

The age of Nintendo is done.

wtf are u talking about

Where is creamsugar? All I want are

Vita numbers
PS4 numbers
PS3 numbers
Sony exclusive sales
Microsoft exclusive sales

Say what you want about Nintendo, at least they came out plain and simple and admitted to their awful sales.

X will be this type of experience. And it will be fucking awesome.

Yeah, but I was talking about why the 3DS was doing better than the Wii U. The points were to highlight how it was more appealing to a wider, more casual demographic. I don't think Animal Crossing soccer moms are going to sit down with a Monster and binge on X for hours on end. :p

are nintendo able to even profit off their own software sales when the wii u's active userbase is so infinitesimal

they may as well move all their shit to 3ds at this point

Drop the Wii name, it's shit and is obviously causing some sort of road block to the less informed. Nintendo HD or something simple like that for their next system.

The other concern is online, yes MiiVerse is nice but the whole infrustructure needs major investment, even basics like proper account management needs sorting.

I would love them to be successful with a proper powerful system without even format drawbacks such as cartridges for N64, mini discs for GameCube and lack of Blu Ray functionality for Wii U.

I don't want to see people lose jobs but something needs to be done. Elements of the fan base annoy me too with the total unwillingness to accept any sort of criticism, they don't help.

Come on Nintendo, get with the times.

Just like the gamecube? This thing isn't going to sell.

The low price of the Gamecube is what made it possible to reach 21 million units sold. Without that, it would have flopped long before and much worse.

Remember: not saying that Wii U suddenly will start selling like crazy. I'm stating that the improvement will be such that at least GC numbers could be possible. At this point the key is not how to make a turnaround. That's not possible anymore. It's how to squeeze as much money as possible from that failure.

Well, I'm happy.
I'm easily one of the biggest nintendo nerds in neogaf. I was crying tears in NY last month when I went inside Nintendo Store for the first time.

Anyway, I've saying for a long time:

1) Nintendo is already preparing an honorific let go to Iwata in march/april. He will step down know. Wii was luck, no competence there.

2) They will release their games in production. They won`t create new games. Don`t expect a new Nintendo Direct. They won`t make it anymore. Expect Nintendo focusing completely in Nintendo 3ds. They will propably cancel the new yoshi yarn and FExSMT for wii u and move it to 3ds. Eventually, they will be completely canned.

3) Wii U is going discontinued in October. It does not make sense in keeping the console alive. Wii U is breaking Nintendo. Even the games don`t sell. Create a game for a system that does not sell is stupid and the worst idea ever. The wii u is not a gamecube, it`s far worse. They`re losing money with hardware and games. Im not sure, but I believe that Mario 3d world needed to sell at least 2 million copies to take development costs back. It didn`t.

4) I see Myamoto retiring soon. He won`t be there for so long, and I think he won`t be willing to take the blame for the bad sales. This will make him retire in the next 3 years.

5) Nintendo will eventually launch a new system, the true Nintendo Dreamcast in home consoles. Nintendo`s future is dark, but it all depends on the next leader. The death of Iamauchi plus the terrible state of Wii U is really capable os destroying this company.

6) It takes years to create a big company, but a couple of months to destroy everything. Nintendo made all the bad choices possible. In the future, people will study how to not launch a product based on Wii U.

Such a terrible day...... but we`re seeing history happening guys. The nazys just conquered Paris or something like this.... I know I'm being ridiculous, but Nintendo is much more ridiculous than I am.

I disagree with the bolded.

A nice gesture if they ever do cut the WiiU loose would be to put all the first party games up on the store for next to nothing and make that the reason to blow out the remaining hardware inventory.

where are the melt downs? I came for the meltdowns..

I think even the most ardent Nintendo apologist would steer clear of this thread. The writing was on the wall since Black Friday. Also, the system sold less than the Dreamcast even after Sega pulled the plug and announced they were going third party. And this is with two full Mario games on the market. In other words, those evergreen titles like Smash and Mario Kart can't come soon enough.

Yikes. They even had a great bundle out there at 199 (TLOU and Batman).

yeah, but when the PS4 is $400 compared to $199 (even with TLOU and Batman) you have to think there's got to be a decent amount of crossover there.

I don't think Sony is really concerned about it. the PS3 had a good run, will continue to sell "ok" numbers, but attention will and should shift to the PS4.

Man, the Japanese-focused management and approach to consoles is aboslutely KILLING Nintendo. The Japanese market doesn't really care much about consoles anymore, so taking a Japanese approach should be the LAST thing to do with a new console. Console gamers in general want GREAT online functionality, an achievement system, more mature IPs (ALONG with great family-friendly games like Mario); things like that.

I remember when the Wii U came out. I bought it on launch day. I know many gamers, both friends and co-workers (I work at a large retail store). NOBODY wanted the thing, and the ONLY game any of my friends and co-workers mentioned like they had somewhat of an interest in? Zombi U. That was it! Why? Because the console market has changed, and, whether we like it or not, those mature games are big, and they sell. But Nintendo's console theme collided with a game like Zombi U, which made console gamers not want to buy the system. They knew that games like Zombi U wouldn't be the norm from Nintendo (I know Nintendo didn't actually make the game but it was a Wii U exclusive). It's colorful, family-friendly UI, name, and marketing didn't help matters. It showed the system not as a console for core gamers, but a system for a demographic that no longer has interest in console gaming.
