NPD Sales Results for November 2013 [Up3: Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, 3DS, Wii U]

You're dreaming if you think those are the solutions to nintendos problem with the wii u

Yeah, those are pretty much negligent factors.
The problem with the Wii U is that it's just not a desirable piece of hardware, for either developers (who would seek more powerful alternatives) or for potential consumers, because the concept of the GamePad just doesn't work in the same way the WiiMote had appeal - it was a swing and a miss from Nintendo, and even their biggest franchises are sinking with it.

Fuck.

It's like watching a family member slowly dying in front of you. You don't want them to die but it's more painful to see them suffer.

RIP Nintendo

I don't think Nintendo can afford a huge $100 price cut for the Wii U. That's just eating to much money for any gaming company. They are better off cutting the price overtime and releasing the games currently in development to recoup the costs overtime. Double down on the 3DS and crank out the successor for their handheld in 2015/2016. Then release a console or device that we have never seen before whether it's a cloud service, console, tablet, phone, or anything else they can create.

Aren't they still losing money on the WiiU as it is because of the price cut a few months back? Come to think of it, I don't know if they were EVER making money on the WiiU.

As to what they even do with their console...regardless of when it comes out, I have no idea what they should do next. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice with the WiiU has failed spectacularly, but there's no guarantee a box on par with the other two consoles would be adopted in a big way by consumers or third party devs.

Where does Nintendo go from here?

Microsoft never had complete dominance, in fact they finished the gen in third place

The first half of last gen? Plus, they were in second place all of last gen. Microsoft announced 80 million 360s sold in October while Sony announced that figure in November. Unless the PS3 leapfrogged the 360 in the week or so before the PS4 launched the 360 was still in second place at the end of that generation.

Innovation is just as appreciated as ever. Innovative games don't have to crack the top 10, or even the top 100, to be successful. And success is relative in the eyes of the creators, anyway.

Besides, I would argue that Skylanders is a very innovative idea and brand, so I think it's there at the top, too.

Unfortunately attempts at innovation too easily come off as cheap gimmicks when they don't work. That's what has Nintendo in trouble now.

Anyone else believe it's time for Nintendo to team with someone in the home console market?

Valve/Apple/Google/whoever?

Wii U from 50k -> 220k is a big increase in 1 month to be honest, I don't know how anyone could have been expecting more considering the Wii U is just starting to get recognized as a new console from Nintendo in the last month of 2013. Nintendo's fault yes, but growth nonetheless. I expect about 480-500k for December, then Nintendo needs to keep some kind of 100k+ a month momentum from January 2014 forward, show an amazing looking Zelda U and announce release dates for Kart, Smash, X and Bayonetta in the next Nintendo direct. They are going to need to push Wii Fit U and DKC:TF pretty hard in January/February to keep something going.

Sorry, this may be a stupid question, but how is the XboxOne the fastest selling console with 900something thousand in a few days? Didn't Sony say that they sold a million on Day1?

It's PR spin. Xbox One came out a week after, so it had less days in November. Amount Sold/Days Available = a better average than Sony.

PR spin-nastics

Spinning would be if they said that the XboxOne was the best selling console over the last 9 days of november.(assuming that the XboxOne sold more units than the Ps4 between launch on the 22nd and end of november.)
But saying the XboxOne was the fastest selling console in november with 900k in 9 days is just wrong when the Ps4 sold a million on a single day. That wouldn't be spinning anymore.

Except I'm missing something here and preorders are counted for the months they were placed in and not the months they were shipped. The the Ps4s million on Day1 would probably shrink drastically if you go by that standard.

You are going to be upset.

I hate when people pull the "this isn't worth X". :/

Well, sorry for sounding so harsh on it. I played the demo and decided it wasn't something I would pay full price on. Also, I was saving my money for Ys: Memories of Celceta.

Money is tight this year. I have to look for sales and a game I would feel bad about paying full price for.. isn't in the cards at $40.

You think December will be higher than the month with the biggest sales?

When the time period is less than one month, the average per day is really irrelevant. Especially when demand exceeds supply.

Oh, definitely. We'd need a larger sample size to really say which console sold the fastest overall. But as of right now, it can't be disputed that what MS said was really that misleading.

This is Nintendo. They don't take losses. I am pretty confident that they are making a profit on every WiiU sold at $300.

People are as expected caught in the Nintendoomed drama but what stood out for me the most was that software sales were down by almost 25% which I think is kind of shocking, given two successful launches and the best november for hardware. People buying consoles but not buying games isn't really a pretty picture, I don't know if this insistence on keeping the old and new generation at the same time is going to dilute sales and be more of a problem than what MS and Sony expected.

I'm not really that shocked about Nintendo numbers, and while troubling I find way more troubling the general picture of the industry. The top selling games and that chart showing the top selling games of 2012 and 2013 are just incredibly depressing.

You're over thinking it. They parse out the days and do the averages to come out favorably. It's spin.

The amount of blind optimism on this post is almost sad.if a new 3d Mario didn't lead to a massive increase in sales, why would niche games like bayonetta and x do anything to move the needle?

I believe they were already losing money before they dropped the price, so unless they've also been able to drop costs quite a bit, they are still losing money.

I don't get how XB1 was supposedly the fastest selling when we know PS4 sold more in just 24 hours.

Anyone?

This fastest selling stuff is silly. So is the 24 hours. Both systems were available for pre order for months. Are preoders not eventually sells? Sony probably had close to a million preorders built up over that time period in N.A, and that's what they pretty much delivered. The fact they didn't have more units to deliver after launch when they clearly had an idea of the preorder numbers they had is unfortunate.

Um have you heard of the Wii? That is complete dominance. The 360 held a solid middle ground while PS3 languished around trying to get its act together. PS3 has slowly closed the gap over a long period, you cant close a sales gap unless your console is selling better than 360. If it was being dominated by 360 the gap would be wider than when this gen started.

Besides who said the race had finished?

Oh, I misunderstood what you meant then. Yes, I agree that they will aim for profitability, but wouldn't that go against your plan? They just did a price cut and they're still losing money on the hardware.
But sure, this thing will reach gamecube numbers AT BEST.

No if they get rid of the tablet controller. Just this thing costs 100$ to make.
