Damn. 3DS needs to sell 600k in the next two weeks for it to make the 5m YTD. Great opening by Puzzle and Dragon. Hopefully it will have a great legs.

How? Puzzle and Dragon is making a killing despite being a great hit in mobile phones and tablets.
I think that is exactly why it sold so well. The game/IP is very well known, perhaps one of the biggest IPs in Japan right now. I wonder how the 3DS version will affect the phone/tablet version.

So is WiiU on it's way to recovering or is this just going to be a holiday blip?

I wouldn't get my hopes up, but considering you being you and thus probably hoping for the latter, you probably should :p

I'm happy for Mario 3d World steady increase in sales. I'm still hoping it will get closer to 400k for the end of the year.

Well I'm sure part of the reason for todays ND spring video is to help keep momentum going into the new year

They will have to pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat today. Let's see how they get on.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Nice debut for P&D, didn't know what to expect. I wonder if it'll reach the million mark.

Also a nice increase for Wii U, you really can't underestimate Nintendo's holiday dominance.

Heh, pretty good numbers for the Wii U. I think it might reach 100k by the end of the month, at this rate. Too bad January will still be brutal, but at least, Christmas will be good enough. Don't f*ck up this momentum, Nintendo.

It looks like Puzzles and Dragons also has a place on 3DS. Is it the normal retail price? If so, I think they will be happy with the incomes :)

Another repeat- Wii U is still in serious trouble, but this shows there is still some interest left from the core Nintendo constituencies.

Pretty much my position. Nintendo don't need to ditch the system; they need to double down on serving the people who have bought it, try and appeal to the people who are on the fence and eke out some profit for the next few years and take serious, serious stock of their position and what they want to be.

Today's Direct will be important in that regard - will they set out something that shows they have some direction for the next 6 months and not just forget about the console after Christmas, as they did at the beginning of this year? If they can show that commitment, there may be a chance of some small recovery and an opportunity to carve out a profitable niche; if not, the system is going to crater fatally next year.

3DS seems really low compared to last year. 500k game and it's not even close to last year. Saturation?

That was my first thought. This week compares pretty poorly with last year considering there was such a big game releasing.

I think that is exactly why it sold so well. The game/IP is very well known, perhaps one of the biggest IPs in Japan right now. I wonder how the 3DS version will affect the phone/tablet version.

Kinda shows the benefit of developing your IP's on smartphones. I feel like this is something most major devs aren't taking advantage of including nintendo. You don't have to release full games to take advantage of it either.

I don't understand Japan. I thought I did but I don't.

It's lower even than first party titles (4,400 v.s. 4,800), but it's still priced as a retail title :D

What is causing the Wii u bump? Is it just the holiday? Nintendo always gets a bump but usually there's software.

Just holyday. I think Nintendo and their IPs are pretty good presents for kids. So I think it makes sense, even without any major title releasing.

Don't be daft. The smartphone version's great, unless they totally fucked up somehow I'm sure the 3DS game is too.

Found it boring as fuck. Played for some days. The IAP bullshit and stamina system is... ugh.

Very good for Wii U. Was expecting around 50k. There is still hope.
Anyway I don't care, Wii U satisfied me in 2013 and will provide the goods in 2014.

Great week for Nintendo, and next week will be even bigger.

Mario 300K+ next week. :)

3DS is a little low though.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but ND has never been about the "future", but about games that are about to be released in the coming months. So, no Fall 2014 games etc. The ND of today will most likely be about DKCTF and maybe MK8 for the Wii U and 3DS games.

Holiday blip but if it can get some more Japanese support because of that blip it may stand a chance at recovery

Even with these bumps I just don't see how WiiU can be turned around in Japan. 3DS gets all japanese heavy hitters, Vita gets niche otaku games and PS4 will get the big franchises that sell also in west. Then we have Nintendo that has showed that it has some major problems with HD development. After Smash bros and Mario Kart what is left that could move systems?

MSRP is lower than that of a regular 3DS title, apparently.

The important things to note about PDZ are that
- smartphone penetration is apparently pretty bad in Japan, so there's an untapped market
- the game seems primarily targeted towards kids, another unfulfilled demographic
- no way this would have opened as high as it did had the smartphone version not existed. Recall that PAD had originally been concepted as a full-fledged RPG before making the pivot to mobile F2P

Different business model, and (slightly) different game. It's FTP on mobile, but with cool-down stamina mechanics where you need to pay money or wait to be able to continue playing (a bit like Marvel Puzzle Quest). P&DZ avoids that, as far as I can tell.

Huh, I really enjoy it. It's a clever twist on the usual match 3. Still, diff'rent strokes and all that.

I think Sony are fucking bonkers for letting it go to 3DS. Well, assuming they had any say in it, which they probably didn't.

A little surprised at PDZ success on 3DS, but in a good way. You never know how a mobile game will translate to a dedicated device retail game. (Angry Birds).

But, WOW at Wii U. Pretty much entirely on the back of 3D World. Pleasantly surprised.
