Soul Sacrifice (and Freedom Wars) shouldn't have been a monster hunter clones :(

-The music is amazing
-Some of the best writing/lore I have ever seen
-The entire premises behind the game is just cool

The worst thing about the game is the gameplay. I feel like it should have been a full fledged RPG instead of some wannabe monster hunter game. All I can think about when playing the game is what could have been. I feel the same way about Freedom wars, shit should have been RPG. I feel like they should have just payed Tecmo/Namco to keep Toukiden/GE off of PSP and just pushed that as their monster hunters.

edit: my bad @ the title

I'm looking forward to Freedom Wars. But never gave Soul Sacrifice a try because the dirty, muddy display and it's hard to see everything.

I agree. I love the artstyle and lore of Soul Sacrifice, and I love the character development system. I love it. And the game is great, I just wish I could've had a full fledged RPG out of it rather than sort of the bite size mission thing. I'd love to have a SS with a world to explore.

I agree SO MUCH. The lore, music, and art style of Soul Sacrifice is AMAZING, and I hate that the gameplay is the way it is. Would have loved to see a full-on action RPG from it.

Freedom Wars isn't even out yet and it was barely in tech demo stage like a month ago...

As for Soul Sacrifice, have you even played MonHun or Soul Sacrifice?

For people pointing out granular differences I think it's pretty clear the TC is talking about an overall mission-based arena style boss combat game vs an RPG with varied locations and story progression, not how similar those games are to Monster Hunter specifically.

I really like Soul Sacrifices gameplay. It's incredibly moreish, a lot of fun and well suited to a portable format.

Those games are good for people like me who just feel like slaying some bosses so i definitly won't complain.
Keep them coming.

Freedom wars isn't out but we did see gameplay. The only thing I wish for Soul Sacrifice is maybe make it open-world game since the area that you fight in are so unique.

SS really isn't a MH clone due to the fact that there is no traversal, minimal setup, and very simple goals.
That big thing over there? Go whack at it until it dies!

MH, for all it's faults has a bit of strategy involved.

But that's not really what defines something as a mh clone. It may be the same genre, but the game plays out completely different from mh.

That's entirely not the point of the topic though. People are getting caught up on the phrase "monster hunter clone" in the title.

Soul Sac, Toukiden, GE, Freedom Wars, MH, whatever, can all be reasonably classified under hunting genre.

The OP is talking about how he wanted a regular adventure RPG instead of a hunting game, not how so-and-so game feels too much like monster hunter specifically.

"Soul Sacrifice should have been a JRPG" sounds like a better title then. When I think of clone I think of that real warfare iOS crap that is obviously trying to make a quick buck off casuals thinking it's a CoD game.

He already apologized for the title but it's completely clear what he really means if you read his first post.

I've noticed this a lot on GAF- even though it is obvious what the OP meant, some people just focus on the OP wording mistakes.

Freedom Wars, it's a bit early to tell as we have barely seen footage , but I'm hoping it bring something interesting to the hunting genre .

Well OP must also be aware of the fact that if games weren't developed as popular genre then they won't be budgeted that much either. It's like hoping if fps would have been a RPG.
Toukiden developer even admitted that it was originally started as an RPG (dungeon crawler) but ultimately ended up as an hunting game (for commercial purpose I suppose), and it was proven to be the success.

Monster Hunter is a Phantasy Star clone.

MH, for all it's faults has a bit of strategy involved.

This sums up MH equally well though, but is still a laughably reductive way to pigeonhole both either way.

lol'd at last sentence though. Especially seeing as half of Soul Sacrifice is pre-battle strategising and preparation.

It's not always obvious. In fact, there are people who do share that thought process in this very thread. More to the point, SS has unfairly been called a MH clone, so how do you know anymore?

With clarification, that's how.

why are you complaining about a game you've seen all of 2 minutes of

The first SS game is out, though.

I am still wondering if SS is worth playing or not. I started it a few times and liked the setting, but I did not really dig the gameplay so far...

If you don't like the gameplay or design of the games, don't play them.

There's nothing wrong with them being in the style of/and or influenced by Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter. That's just the style of the game. Some people actually like the concept of ganging up with their buddies and fighting giant, tough monsters for loot, and those people are the target audience of these games. If you don't enjoy that, then these games are not for you.

It's that simple.

Don't forget the actual combat is also more in depth by far

So wrong ..

Shooters are Doom clones !

Actually, in the early years of the FPS - the mid-nineties - that was the most common term for the genre. No negative implications.
A lot of people who use the phrase "Monster Hunter clone" use it to refer to the hunting action genre, also with little to no negative implication.

Oh yeah?

You should give it a try, it's pretty good
They really aren't Monster Hunter clones
OK
Soul Sacrifice isn't a MH clone, gameplay wise. Have you even played both?
I'm LITERALLY playing both right now.

Every hunting action game = monster hunter clones.

Uuuuummmm yes pretty much and the genre is fairly new. It's not like it has had time to cultivate and fully move out of MH's shadow. The influx of hunting action games didn't start until Sony lost MH. And yes, I have brought up the Phantasy Star thing before.
They're not, it's fine.
OK

SS is not a MH clone.
OK
LittleBigPlanet shouldn't have been a Mario clone :(
I wish it was a mario clone. If it was, the platforming wouldn't be garbage.
Freedom Wars isn't even out yet and it was barely in tech demo stage like a month ago...

I'm pretty sure it will be, judging from the gameplay we have seen and it being called a "cooperative action game". And once again, I'm playing both right now. SS is more basic and is based around magic instead of swords but the concept is the same. It's still the same repetitive bullshit that plagues all MH clones(not that it's all bad, I'm starting to enjoy MH, and like SS and GE).

Soul Sacrifice isn't a "Monster Hunter clone".
OK
Inafune himself said Soul Sacrifice is a Monster Hunter clone.

Let's not.

If only

The story is worth it
