Anyone else love good, low poly art?

It's great, here are some I had saved on my computer. I love the NES colour pallete on these SotC ones.

I found Fez to be beautiful:

Seemingly more similar to the style posted in OP and absolutely stunning, Chasing Aurora:

Also, I'm not sure it counts, but those low poly animals made me think of Tearaway:

I think low poly flat shaded images have a certain appeal to them. Especially when they are displayed at a higher resolution.

Virtua Racing Flat Out looked really nice on the PS2:

Modern low poly artistic games? Yes
Old low poly games? Absolutely not, old 3d graphics don't age as well as 2d.

I don't like the look of very many of games people have posted in here at all, but I LOVE the look of the stuff in post #1 and #5. So yeah, give me the low poly stuff that has color and shaders but no texture. That stuff looks great. Emulating the look of PS1 games though...not so much.

I love this thread.

I do love low poly art, even in games, but only if it's coupled with clean textures. Megaman Legends is a good example.

This game has to be one of the first to to be intentionally designed with a modern matte-look low-poly aesthetic. I made a gif years and years ago of the monkey:

People already posted MML, which is my favourite in-game example.

I think it is really nice when the textures are rather minimalistic, over detailing makes it look messy and detracts from the simplicity.

Some misinformation here.

Lots of these models are actually NOT low poly, but the models have been triangulated and then had the edges hardened, giving it the impression of being low poly when in reality its just an artistic choice.(like a high poly, smooth surfaced lighthouse sitting on top of a high poly, hardened, triangulated rock formation)

I do like artistic use of low poly art mixed with advanced shaders. Not the look you can seel to a publisher/producer, so an indie is gonna have to break ground first.

Yeah, low poly art is really cool. I kind of want to get back into 3D modeling to work on it. I particularly love unfiltered textures.

I know we'll eventually get equally as tired of it, but I can't wait for retro-ish 3D models to be as "in" as retro-ish 2D is now.

Wow, so I'm not the only one who immediately though of Mega Man Legends.

In particular, I remember the world of Elysium from Mega Man Legends 2 standing out. The haunting atmospheric music, the beautiful landscape and backgrounds, and the particularly dark nature of the story when you reach this point in the game really stand out to me. This is why this game is one of my all-time favorites.

In relation to the specific topic, it really pushed the PS1 hardware well, with its beautiful textures, and the models were of a much better quality than its predecessor (MML1), all while retaining that old-school look and design-feel.

I somehow immediately thought of Radiant Silvergun. Great mix of 2D and delightfully clunky polygonal models.

The wild camera swoops of the final boss are so incredibly epic.

Since I mostly skipped the PSOne/N64-era, a lot of the examples posted remind me more of DS games. Nanostray looked really good, for example (even if the video compression kinda ruins it):

However, I absolutely NEED 60fps to enjoy low poly models in games. Makes me feel like I´m playing some cool mid-90s arcade game.

Oh, and Quake of course!

Everytime I see a shot from Interstate '76, it makes me wish there was a sequel.

And then I remember that there was a sequel.

And then I sadly reflect and realize that it's best to not wish for another one.

Ugh thanks for reminding me of one of my biggest game disappointments :(

I started to dabble in PSX/N64 games and I must say i really enjoy those rugged low poly looking games. I think they look pretty great actually

Virtua Fighter 1 and Sonic the Fighters were always fun to look at.

sonic20vs20knucklesbvbux.jpg

I think there's a mindset out there that polygons can't be iconic as pixels. Flat-shaded models have the same minimalizing effect though

Let's not forget that even though early 3D games were blurry, so were 2D games on the TVs they originally played on.

I kind of secretly hope this is the next big trend with indie games. We've seen the 8 and 16 bit retro graphics thing beaten like a dead horse. I'd like to see more games take graphical cues from PSone/N64 generation (but cleaned up and hi-res, obviously). A 3D platformer with those kinds of visuals (polys with minimal textures, like Crash or Mario 64) is just begging to be made.

The animation in Sonic the Fighters is so striking

over the top squash and stretch paired with really angular characters

I love the PS1-era 3D aesthetic with the big chunky pixels. The texture warping kind of ruined it back then, but it's not a problem now so I'd like to see more of it. That Mojang astronaut is beautiful.

I saw the title and came in with the intention of posting work from the same artist that OP already posted; good work OP.

Not sure if this really counts, but for Gungriffon fans the final version of the fanmade HIGH-MACS simulator came out not too long ago with some great 32-bit styled mechanical and world modelling.

I would love this to be a genuine artistic style for AAA games. Not all mind you but just having a a large game do this could lead to some interesting worlds to explore and experimentation.

I kinda liked the look of Kingdoms of Amalur, well parts of it (I don't like how all the guys are the Hulk lol), a lot of very sharp, geometric though beautiful geography.

I like low polys when associated to flat shading (and vice versa), probably because it has that "futuristic look of the 80s". ;)

vf1-ex1.jpg

It also makes everything clean, and easy to "understand" visually.
I'm not too fond of pixellated textures, though, most of the time they're adding confusion, and showing a technical limitation more than an attempt of simplification.

The best low res textures look like mosaics or even pixel art, its cool as fuck if done right IMO.

This low ply art is actually pretty awesome. I didn't even know people cared to do art like this really. I'm loving it!

I fell in love with this style quite early in my life, 1985 or '86, not sure anymore.

Please someone tell me that he recognises it. :D

Hint:

First riff I learned on the guitar. :D

It's from
the "Money for nothing" music video by Dire Straits.

No idea what this is, but I gotta move these microwave ovens.

I absolutely adore it, its so effective when its done well. My favorite is when the textures are chunky, poppy, and pixely like old toony capcom games (Megaman Legends, Battle N Chase, and Rival Schools)
Heres a few of my favorite modern lowpoly stuff (aside from the obvious like kenneth fejer):
