have a few questions.
the hd collection rule:

why do you have that rule?
and what about games, you bought a 2nd time?

i own and beat fez, guacamelee! and dark souls on consoles already , but now i bought them a 2nd time on steam.

would those games count as +1?

That's why I don't count them myself. There are, for instance, very minor differences between the four different versions of Final Fantasy VI that I own and I don't see the point of counting them separately. The first copy that I got in '94 would be a -1 and the first time I beat it I would get a +1. All following copies are just zeros.

It's a lot easier to follow the thread if people make new posts. No one is going to go back and read old posts.

I plan on beating a lot of games this year. I've just been updating my first post so far, but I can fall in line with this. Is it preferable that I post for every new completion or should I do periodic updates (weekly/monthly)?

Do as you please. I will be updating once a month.

@alekth: I count those as permanent -1s which largely explains why I ended up at -60 points last year.

It's a -1 if you bought it this year. If it's been backlogged since before Jan 1 and you finally decided to give it up, it's a 0 for this year.

Do gamefly games count towards a +/-1? Or do they fall more under how PS+ games/freebies are counted?

like PS+ games, I'd only count Rentals as +/-1 if I completed them.

Nope. Skip them if you have no intention of ever playing them.

Edit: Well, you could technically count Forza 4 if you wanted to since it's a different game. It's up to you to decide.

Agreed. It's up to you.

As far as I'm concerned, the best answer to just about all grey-area questions in this thread is, "whatever makes you feel better about your backlog." The entire intent of the original Backlog Blitz thread was using it as a means to feel positive about working on my backlog, and to help examine my buying habits. Counting a "free" game that you have no intention of playing against yourself seems counter-productive, so I wouldn't count it.

Next up, VLR and Valkyria Chronicles!

Decided to keep it going on the Virtual Console tip instead, just beat Mega Man III. I gave up months ago at the Rock Monster, but managed to finally plow through today. He's actually easier in this one than the original.

Overall the game was tougher and better than I remember. I recall thinking it was kind of inferior to Mega Man II when it came out, but I like it much better 20 years later.

Doing well so far, I think I've already finished more games in 2014 than I did the first 5 months of 2013.

Okay, Mega Man X down. I had been stuck on that vertical tunnel on the first Sigma stage for a while. Back in the SNES days I didn't really appreciate this game, for whatever reason I considered it inferior to the main Mega Man series (really liked the original sprite, I consider it unassailable design). This game didn't click with me until I played the remake, Maverick Hunter, on PSP. That was utterly fantastic. The SNES version has aged really well too, though I don't remember the final boss being that insane. Was he toned down for MHX?

Anyway, this was just about flawlessly executed as an action game. Those controls are so responsive, just butta. Good times. It early makes me want to get MMX2, since that just hit VC but...must stay focused on the goal...backlog slaying!

Knocked Madden off the list. Won the Super Bowl and did the NFL Draft. Feels complete to me after getting most of the achievements. That will bring me even again. I also need to figure how I want to play third party games this generation: PS4 or Xbox One. Leaning PS4 due to the improved controller and better graphics, but most of my friends have Ones.

Keeping going with the old school VC games (sometimes I wonder why I even bought a PS4), just finished Final Fight 3.

PROTIP: Haggar.

I've seen some people list this game as one of the best on the SNES. It's not bad, it adds more characters and some special command moves, but it doesn't have the atmosphere that the original Final Fight had, and the game just feels like one long straight hallway with almost no environmental interactivity. It only took me about 3 tries to beat the game, as well - if you know your way around old school beat 'em ups you'll have the AI dialed (such as it is) pretty quickly, even for the last boss. There was only one enemy in the game who gave me a really hard time, the stage 4 boss. But even he can be overpowered at the cost of a couple of lives.

Anyway, overall not a bad game, and a bit of a hidden curiosity from Capcom's back catalog as it showed up late in the SNES' lifespan (1996). It kind of makes me want to go back and play Final Fight 2 again but...I must persevere.

I would like to thank this thread for having a demonstrable positive influence on my buying habits just halfway through the first month. I've been on the fence about Strike Suit Zero for an entire year and just saw that it was added to the Humble Bundle. There are so many other good games in this particular batch that I almost caved. Then I thought of my score in this thread. That bundle would have reset me to zero or sent it to negatives, but I persevered. Thank you thread!

It’s a bit early, but at least for now I’ll do another one in a few weeks. I will gladly provide feedback on anything I have finished or will finish.

Games bought this month (2)
Braid (PC)
Valdis Story (PC)

Games completed this month (2)
Golden Axe 3 (PS3)
Mario Kart DS (DS)

Games playing now (7)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 (360)
Etrian Odyssey 3: The Drowned City (DS)
Gradius 3 (PSP)
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (GC)
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
You Don't Know Jack Vol. 6 (PC)

Possible next games to start (???)
Another RPG (leaning on Odin Sphere or Icewind Dale 1)
Sonic 1
Whatever my brother or friend wants to start with me (I haven’t got a clue)

Persona 2: Innocent Sin + 1

I'm trying to limit the amount of games I play at one time. One AAA Console/PC game, one handheld game and one indie game. If I beat one I shuffle a new one into place. Looking for the next AAA game in by backlog to play. I'm stuck between The Witcher 2 and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.

Beat Mega Man IV. Wow, that was way harder than the previous games in the series. The stuff after the robot masters was particularly brutal, having to do half the level again every time you died on the difficult bosses. it was also kinda charmless compared to previous entries, though some of the bosses were cool.

2014:

Beaten: 6

I've been really good so far about not getting anything, but I think I'll need to get Bioshock Infinite off PS+, I haven't played it yet. Either way, good to see my backlog finally dropping a bit. Let's see how long I can keep this going for.
