Broken Age Part 1 releasing this Tuesday (January 14th)

Wow, so you're super cynical. Broken Age is not the first KS game to get out.

To be fair, Broken Age was the first high-profile video game Kickstarter, and still one of the largest. I think the biggest one to be released so far was Shadowrun Returns, which got a quarter of the funding. The other really notable games off the top of my head are FTL (which was a huge success but a relatively small KS) and Strike Suit Zero. I'm probably missing a few, though.

I'm slowly getting sick of episodic games. especially, if you have to wait FOREVER to get another episode. I will wait.

Same. I'm still waiting for the second part of the Bioshock Infinite DLC before I but the first, waiting on The Walking Dead Season 2 to finish before I jump in and gonna wait for all of Broken Age to be finished before I play it even though I backed it ages ago.

I do think there's something symbolic about this release, though, given that it arguably was responsible for opening the floodgates. I suspect people will like to champion it as 'proving the concept works / doesn't work' simply for that reason despite how often it's pointed out that many games have been released through crowdfunding before and after Broken Age, with Shadowrun and Broken Sword being two particularly large-budget - and IMO, successful - ones.

I was so incredibly hyped for this when it was announced, but now Im not sure I even care. Took way too much time to get out :(

Videogame development, it takes time.

I think in this case it was more of a money issue than time. The whole Double Fine process kinda showed the PROs of having a publisher but I'd still rather have devs go through a process like this then deal with all the cons that come with publishers like EA or Activision.

Wait, but reading all the comments on SteamOS threads, I was under the impression that there were no games, current or upcoming, that were available for Linux. Neogaf misinformed me?

I literally installed Steam for Linux about 30 minutes ago for the first time. 35 out of my 96 games are supported, which kind of shocked me.

This is a glorious moment. I've been waiting for Tim Schafer to return to adventure games since he released Psychonauts. That game mostly stunk and most of Double Fine's other games have been lackluster. I'm so happy that I was able to help fund his return to the genre, and hopefully, greatness. :)

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
A lot of them do, in my experience. Humble Bundle is really useful for crowd-funded projects.

I guess I haven't backed that many so far. Was it an option for Shadowrun Returns and Broken Sword V? That's all I think I've backed that's come out so far, with Banner Saga coming out soon too.

Is the documentary going to continue after part one is released? I stopped watching when the game started getting into shape in order to know as little as possible, but I assume it'll be safe for the most part after playing it. Really great stuff up to that point too.

I was starting to feel that way for a while, and it's part of why I largely won't be backing projects on KS anymore, but the recent footage got me back on board the hype train. Hopefully once the game is released, it'll win you back over too!

Yeah, I think that's about the same ratio for me. I bet also if you look at the date they were published, the more recent ones are much more likely to have Linux support.

OT: this game looks cool, and I am not an adventure game guy.

I'm assuming they are going to be emailing backers Steam Keys? I'll have to keep on top of that. Hoping everything goes smoothly and their isn't a big fuck up.

on what platforms will it be on? ps4/3? android?

PC/Mac/Linux/Android/iOS/Ouya are all confirmed at this point, but I wouldn't expect all the ports to come out until after Part 2 is released.

Yes it is. They're still going to keep away from Part 2 spoilers.

Guys, don't expect part 2 to come any time soon. In the documentary they show that they're not too far into it as of October/November last year.

It won't take as along as part 1 since all their tools and processes are now mature, but I wouldn't be surprised if part 2 doesn't come out until late 2014.

Part 2 is slated for May, I believe. It might take longer, but it shouldn't be more than half a year or so.

And IIRC Part 1 is roughly 2/3 of the entire game's content.

That already happened whne I played a bunch of other great kickstarter games like FTL and Volgarr.

FTL was great, but I don't know if it counts. It was a fairly modest goal, and from what I remember, the game was already mostly done by the time they asked for funding for the final leg of development.

It's not me that's cynical; I've backed all the projects mentioned in this thread, but there are many who decried developers' use of Kickstarter as a legitimate option for funding game development. I'm trying to say that delivery of DFA, the first big game Kickstarter, as well as multiple other notable projects in the same time period will hopefully represent a clear trend of backers' faith being rewarded and close the door on the doubts that Kickstarter is viable.

My first Kickstarter is finally giving me something! I'm actually pretty excited. The game looks really promising.

Sorry for the minor confusion!

14th is backers-only; there is no way for non-backers to get in on the game before the public release date. We'll be announcing the public release on the 14th, once the backers have the game, but Part 1 will have a backer-exclusive period.

If you're a backer, you'll be getting an email next week; fulfillment will be very easy. You'll get a Steam key via Humble. We have some requests for our backers in terms of spoilers etc., we'll explain those in next week's backer update.

Edit: One more thing. For boring logistical reasons, the game is no longer Steam Early Access. It's just a regular Steam game. But anyone who has Part 1 (either by being a backer, or by buying the game via preorder or public sale) will get Part 2 included when it comes out.

The documentary has been worth the price of admission already. If the game turned out horrible I still feel like I would have got my money's worth :p

One week before my birthday, can't wait. I'm so excited to finally play (some) of it!

This year is going to be great for Double Fine. Broken Age, Hack N' Slash, Spacebase's ongoing development, and hopefully Massive Chalice.

Reminds me that I have a couple of episodes of the documentary to catch up to. Definitely the best part of this whole project.

Will this be on Steam for anyone to purchase on the 14th or just people who backed it? I didn't even hear of it till the VGA's and now I want it!

Very excited, my most anticipated game in a good while

In a weird way I'm sort of sad part 1 is coming out; don't want the documentary to go!
same here, it's been so fantastic. but we ended up getting a lot of more episodes than originally planned, so i can't complain too much

Smart to not go Early Acess. Never made sense to me that it was going to be labeled as Early Access. It's episodic. If the first part is a complete first part then it's a "full game". Especially since fewer people will cover it.
