Some good #NPD SW facts: #XboxOne YTD 2013: 4.8M retail games vs. 4.2M for PS4. COD & BF4 both sold better on #XboxOne.

Last #NPD fact: 1st/2nd party (exclusives) SW sales for #XboxOne 1.5M units vs. 599K for PS4. Led by Dead Rising, Forza 5 and Ryse.

1st/2nd party = 1.5 million XBO
1st/2nd party = 599K PS4

3rd party = 3.3 million XBO
3rd party = 3.6 million PS4

"Some good NPD facts."
I'm in tears with all the laughter.

Aaron Greenberg confirmed that the numbers he gave was YTD (November + December).

So this would be correct then:

November:

Dead Rising 3: 212K
Forza Motorsport 5: 185-200K
Ryse: 185-200K

December:

Dead Rising 3: 314K (526K total)
Forza Motorsport 5: 257-272K (457K total)
Ryse: 231-246K (431K total).

Huh? How?

We know a little bit about which games sold better from NPD order:

http://abload.de/img/138991395288zqojr.jpg

CoD, BF4, and JD'14 sold better on XBO in 2013. (The 3 best selling games of December). He doesn't mention Just Dance so we know it's not a complete list of games.

LEGO and Skylanders may have also sold better overall on XBO since they beat the PS4 versions in December. We know at least six 3rd party games sold better on XBO last month.
He probably means the 1.5 million 1st party games sold, subtracted from the earlier number that were given with total Xbox One software sales. It shows that the total 3rd party software sales were higher on PS4 based on this.

Well, the 360 had a higher attach ratio, so it wouldn't surprise me if the trend continues this gen even if the PS4 manages to outsell it month to month (though I think January XBox One will again come out ahead).

I'm pretty surprised Greenberg gave actual Sony numbers, not just percentages. I think that's a first.

I demand Greenberg give out Nintendo numbers

If it's LTD:

November:

Dead Rising 3: 212K
Forza Motorsport 5: 185-200K
Ryse: 185-200K

December:

Dead Rising 3: 314K (526K total)
Forza Motorsport 5: 257-272K (457K total)
Ryse: 231-246K (431K total).

Probably makes a bit more sense. Even still those are nice numbers all around. Hopefully it gets Microsoft to commit even harder to exclusives throughout the entirety of the generation.

Their 2014 looks fantastic. Hopefully it doesn't end up tailing off so much like the 360 did in its later years.

Maybe someone's beaten me to the punch but here's a coloured table of the last 5 years of top 10 games:

If the 1.5M was YTD, then this is the only way that makes sense.

EDIT: Clarified above

Well we know that NFL fans are still mainly on Xbox. That answers that question from before.

There's a baseless stereotype we can have now: Xbox fans like football, PlayStations fans like basketball. :p

well both sold better on PS4 for the year

I'm in tears with all the laughter.

Microsoft execs really just should stop talking, as much humor as it provides us here on GAF they really have just perfected the art of sticking their feet in their mouths

We also have to keep in mind that the third party titles could be bought before the ps4 was out. And then there was that one deal with ps4 games in nov. this allowed Xbox versions to pass the ps4 versions in dec. then we also have the supply issues with the ps4.

Next gen hardware is lower than I predicted. Down 2% YoY with two new consoles? Wow.

PS4 is sold out, so it has an excuse, but Xbone should have done better considering supply is more than ample. It's going to tank hard in the next few months, PS4 should stay healthy due to pent up demand.

XB1 retail exclusives: 5
PS4 retail exclusives: 2

Ratio: 2.5

Sales ratio: 2.5

Dem #NPDfacts.

Color me surprised that the One pushed more software than the PS4. Being out of stock for most of the month was probably the big culprit there.

It's still a little odd, because there are still more PS4s out there. I suppose new buyers are more likely to pick up multiple games, but LTD numbers should be higher for the PS4, and maybe they're not...if it's been mentioned, I missed it.

I wonder if we're already seeing some mainstream buyers affecting that. The PS4 is getting that "gotta have it" reputation. I've already been asked by several "non-gamers" if they should get one, and how to find one.

he tweeted me back.

@aarongreenberg so 3rd party games sold more on #PS4 ?

Aaron Greenberg ‏@aarongreenberg

@11000Wattz 3rd party did yes, but less overall and less for 1st/2nd party which are the exclusives. Also SW attach rate was higher on XB1

If I was Iwata I would be delighted with WiiU selling more than 460 000 units for December tbh. I don't see a lot of people bringing up the fact that WiiU was going up against PS4, Xbone, their unreal marketing campaigns and extremely cheap PS360 bundles yet WiiU still managed to have it's best ever month.

People can compare WiiU hardware numbers against Gamecube and Wii all they want but in 2002 MS were no way as strong in the videogame industry as they are now and obviously Wii was a once in a lifetime 'fad' which will never be repeated by Nintendo.

Going on their current position in the market and it's current price of $299, people should expect WiiU to track behind Gamecube because MS have a much larger slice of the market.

Iwata would not be delighted. Keep in mind, their official forecast for Wii U sales this fiscal year remains at 9 million units. There is nothing good or delightful about ~460K units, if that's what they are, given the context of just how badly the system is doing overall. I could be wrong, but I certainly do not expect Nintendo to confirm any December number, not when any such confirmation in the biggest retail month in the biggest market would also confirm that they're not going to hit projections. Again, I believe they'll sit on the news until they reveal their quarterly data and are forced to modify their forecasts.

So Dead Rising 3 LTD sales number in the US is 526,000. It shouldn't have trouble meeting Capcom's initial projection of 1.2 million shipped for this fiscal year ending March 31, 2014.

Come on Sony!

We need the numbers!

Don't be embarrassed if they outsold you a few hundred thousand units. You're still sold out while they have ample supply and you're still leading them. Hopefully someone at Sony is reading this because this is for Math!

We need the numbers,

You too Nintendo. Get to talking.

Maybe the lower PS4 games sales also have something to do with the recent large uptake in PS+ subscriptions, after all there were a few free games given out for that that subscribed, or used their 30 day voucher (I think it was 30 days, maybe 14).

Congrats to MS too, good numbers when you consider some of the backlash earlier in the year, they seem to have turned around what could have been a very problematic situation considering their earlier missteps.

I honestly thought people in the US would treat a $500 console like the plague.

TBF the real test of any console is after the holidays. That's when the $500 (or $400 for that matter) price stings the most since it's often not simply an expensive gift anymore.

We'll see how these consoles fair then
