NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

I think that whatever WiiU and 3DS are currently selling is in spite of their hardware.
The 3DS library is great (despite being completely ignored by western devs), and it is carrying the system. WiiU clearly has other issues regarding support.

Yet, 3DS is still too expensive. not only the hardware, but the game prices are way too high.

There are also hidden 'costs' when buying nintendo hardware that make it so much less appealing to invest in. Region locking, no proper accounts, lack of online parity, lack of faith in nintendo services, etc. make it hard to invest in the hardware. Buying games and hardware feels like a huge risk and not just an impulse buy.

Nintendo NEEDS to invest heavily in services. They have to be the central component to their multiplatform strategy going forward, not hardware. Good services encourage purchases, intragen hardware upgrades, crossgen loyalty, etc.

Wtf. Vita didn't even do 100k in December. Can we all finally accept now that the PS4 is not going to do much for the Vita. Remote play appeals to a very small amount of people just like off TV play which the wii u has. People don't care about that.

Impressive from MS and Sony, hopefully Jan through March continue to push good numbers.

Wii U is alright compared to the year but still not good.

3DS down is due to price, they really need to get that down.

Vita...just lol.

Still no numbers for 3DW or LBW?

I think Titanfall is going to absolutely slaughter going by chatter. I believe NPD will be entertaining in the next couple of months :)

Whoa the PS3 fell very sharply and bigger than i expected. Vita hardware is shit. GT numbers are shit. Nice to know Vita software is not doing utter shit.

In all of 2013:

Nintendo 1st party: -4.7% ($ revenue) compared to 2012

Sony 1st-party: 43.2% ($ revenue) compared to 2012

Not bad for Sony, but very bad for Nintendo. That is with AC, Pokemon Zelda and all of the software released this year.

No thoughts on Vita? :p
<100k is definitely less than I ever imagined.... It means basically no retail presence.
It's dead in the US. Has been all year (well, since launch really). It doesn't even hurt anymore. I saw 95k and thought 'huh, yeah, sure'.

I mean, it's a shame, but it is what it is. People just don't want the product.

SmokyDave is holding back the tears
either that, or just blank acceptance
A little from column A and a little from column B ;)

Thanks to remote play, I don't need to worry about western support. That makes life easier.

Supply....whats your point?

I'm guessing they'll have more supply than they had in December for the US. There seems to have been large shipments from all major retailers this month.
but... It wasn't. Sony messed up and lost buyers because they couldn't properly supply the US. This is in no way a negative for Sony, and is a positive for MS. Sony just potentially lost many buyers for the next few years, and Microsoft just gained a new costumer for the next 5+ years.

lol. I have no idea what you're talking about. Why didn't you come to the conclusion that the people who bought the Xbox One would have bought it regardless? I don't think there's enough people out there who are so impatient that they wouldn't wait until the PS4 is in stock and drop 500 bucks on a system they didn't intend to get in the first place. The consoles will last for at least the next 5 years.

Probably that PS4 would have sold more than the XBO if the supply was there.

Here's what we got, so far.

1. 3DS - ?
2. XB1 - 908K
3. PS4 - ~860K
4. 360 - 643K
5. WIIU - 481K
6. PS3 - 299K
7. WII
8. PSV - ~95K

481K. Not bad, not bad. Close to my 500K prediction. Refreshing end of the year. If only it was that much every month throughout the year... Now, let's see if DKCTF, MK8 & etc can make this number appear again. Oh, and, don't get me wrong. I don't think the console will do a complete 180 like the 3DS did.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Yeah...everyone knows this. I was just guessing what he meant by that statement....turns out he was talking about something else.

It's out on PC, and 360... unless MS all out lies and markets it as a XBO only game I don't see it pushing too many XBO sales. There will be a bump... but not as much as if it was exclusive to XBO. It'll sell mostly on 360 then PC, and lastly XBO.

I've thought about this, but the Xbox 360 version could actually turn out to be quite the help for the Xbox One version of the game. With so many Xbox 360 owners out there, what better advertisement could there be for a potential next gen version if the game really does turn out as good as hoped? Not like Titanfall suffers from a lack of word of mouth, but actual 360 owners having the game themselves might turn out to be the best form of advertisement for the even better next gen version.

I find myself wondering what the near nonexistent vita sales mean for remote play going forward. I wonder if sony will even keep enforcing the remote play for every game thing if it keeps tanking like this.

Huh?

Remote play does not require any extra work.

It's a system level feature. At worst, devs just won't make custom Vita control schemes.

Great numbers for WiiU, Pikmin 3, and Lego City Undercover. Rayman WiiU outselling the PS3 and X360 versions combined? Heh.

Looks like the PS4 and XBone will outsell the WiiU number by the end of January. As for Nintendo's revision -- it's back to reality.

I love the feature, there is absolutely no reason to get rid of it.

What am I reading?

Are you trying to say that someone with a 360 will show their friends the game and then said friends will go out and buy an XBO and the game to not play with their original friend? Those are some shitty friends.

Way to go Microsoft! Keep it competitive. It would not be good for consumers if one or the other got huge lead.

Oh Nintendo! Damn . . . not even getting Gamecube numbers. The WiiU is dead. It is just a platform to play Nintendo First party software now. Ditch the tablet controller and slash the price to $200. I'll then get one just to play Super Mario 3D World.

The software lists are so boring these days with the same tent-pole multi-platform titles dominating over and over and over again. :-/

... I did. I didn't say "Sony lost a buyer forever", I said "Sony lost a buyer for a few years", because more likely than not, they did. I doubt someone who had to wait for Christmas to get a $500 device, will casually buy another $400 device in the next few months. They'll either wait a year, or more likely than not, wait for a price-drop, which will probably take 2 years at least.

Yeah...everyone knows this. I was just guessing what he meant by that statement....turns out he was talking about something else.
Ahh... I assumed he meant that in a negative way for Microsoft, which I don't see how it's negative for them.

Don't get me wrong I love it too. But if devs at some point decide they don't want to do remote play for one reason or another(Like Blizzard didn't), I wonder how far sony would go to keep them on it with the system being nearly dead WW(Minus Japan where it's at least selling reasonably).

No, he's saying that people will play the 360 version and then want to go out and buy the XBone to play the better version.

Not sure I agree with that, but I could see MS using Titanfall 1 to hook in 360 owners and then make Titanfall 2 exclusive to the XBone to drive some people to upgrade.

Well that is just silly and would be very very few people.

This on the other hand is something that could actually work.

it was about halfway through the thread, nice long discussion especially since his other tweet accidentally reveals that the PS4 has sold more 3rd party software

Ah ok i only went back an hour as according to my feed he said it 32 mins ago.

I'm not surprised Xb1 sold less 3rd party software as MS's 1st party offerings were really good for a launch line up

Depends how good the game is, if its that good people will want to pay the superior version

I am sorry, but you are delusional if you think that the majority of people would buy the game for the 360 then say 'holy fuck this game is the GOAT! I must play the most superior version!' Then proceed to run out and buy a whole new console
or PC
and game to play the same game.
