NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

No thoughts on Vita? :p
<100k is definitely less than I ever imagined.... It means basically no retail presence.

I think that's a combination of "lol Vita" and "lol SCEA" because they aren't even trying to do anything. Well, they have a succesful handheld and didn't give a crap either, so it's not surprising.

But during this year, the difference between America's and Europe's brand has been notorious. Europe has done those megapacks, there have been good deals and quite some bundles (Christmas has Vita + Mem Card + Game = 169€), Gamescom >>> E3, first party output was from EU (Guerrilla Cambridge, MM, Novarama).

It's not surprising that US numbers are crap. They're probably better (at least not abysmal) in Europe, it's sad that there isn't a viable tracker giving hardware numbers for Europe.

B:TS ~ 202k
kh1.5 ~ 438k
tox ~ 156k
miku ~ 16k
TLOU ~ 1473k
gowa ~ 783k
sly ~ 208k
ni no kuni ~ 329k
Seriously? Man, this is why I wish the NPD would show more than the top ten, the top ten's usually just musical chairs among the biggest series with someone randomly jacking a chair for a month or two before being kicked out.

When are Nintendo going to reduce the price of 3DS software.

Software numbers down YOY even with all the titles they released. Reduce the RRP of these games and start putting on sales for the old games. Do something!!!!

I am sorry, but you are delusional if you think that the majority of people would buy the game for the 360 then say 'holy fuck this game is the GOAT! I must play the most superior version!' Then proceed to run out and buy a whole new console
or PC
and game to play the same game.

eh "majority"? where did that come from?

If the game is that good why wouldnt people get into it and decide that this is the game that makes them want to jump into next gen? People upgrade their PC graphics card all the time when there's a game they like that they want to run better. Im not saying everyone will but over the course of the next year I can see the game (if its as good as people who've played it are saying) being a driver for people to pony up the money to go next gen

If anything it could make people want to just go straight to the X1 version.

This could be the game that encourages all those current 360 owners who haven't upgraded to either new system yet to make their decision.

Well, just think what kind of people have a custom gaming PC and spent times switching components. It's a completely different audience than a console buyer. Enthusiasts for GAF and other forums may bit and do what you're saying, but I don't think most people have said. Most people will play the game on the 360, love the game, keep playing and, whenever they decide to pick their next gen console of choice, they'll buy Titanfall 2 or just bought the first one for 20$ if they have a X1 and its sequel hasn't released.

Desinforming customers (like most marketing partnerships does) making them think it's a X1 exclusive will drive more systems... probably.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Sorry when I said very few people, then you said just people my mind jumped to majority.

Eh, I don't like your PC upgrade comparison, in that I just don't equate most console-only people willing to upgrade like PC people. Plus PC people won't have to re-buy the game and start all over again. I am also just bringing my own feelings into it and thinking that buying the same game twice in a year PLUS a $500 console is out there.

Because no one knows if the game is _that_ good. Most of the hype-driven wagons will get annihilated in the end. I'm not seeing why Titanfall gets the hype at all. It seems to be a CoD clone with Brink stuff and mechs with some bots running around - so if anything, it reminds me of Brink hype. Only that Titanfall has MS PR money behind them. Expect nothing exceptional.

These are largely the same people who just paid $400/$500 to play a marginally better looking version of Call of Duty Ghosts.

In what world 80 million PSP sold is not living up to its potential? Some of you, ugh.
I was talking implicitly of my expectations for the platforms. What I was hoping they'd be.

There's no question that PSP was a huge success. It's the only non-Nintendo handheld to sell 80 million units. That's GBA territory. But I don't think either lived up to my lofty ambitions of "Home console gaming on the go."

but... It wasn't. Sony messed up and lost buyers because they couldn't properly supply the US. This is in no way a negative for Sony, and is a positive for MS. Sony just potentially lost many buyers for the next few years, and Microsoft just gained a new costumer for the next 5+ years.

You mean like the Wii? How did that work out for Nintendo? Oh yeah... It was the best selling console of last gen by a pretty big margin despite having major supply issues out of the gate. I think Sony is in a pretty damn good position considering they're in the lead worldwide (including the US) yet it's still highly desired and sold out pretty much everywhere you look.

The fact remains that demand for the PS4 is significantly higher. I doubt they lost that many sales to people are lack the patience to wait for one.

Do those Vita sales show why a PS4/Vita bundle wont really change much? People desperate to get there hands on a hard to find PS4 could bite but in general would consumers really be interested?

But the majority of the sales still came from the 360, plus Titanfall is an *unproven* franchise compared the established and entrenched COD.

Don't know why, but no.

I think the calculation puts the 3ds at around 1m. But no we don't have official numbers from cream or Aqua.

Can we get 3D World and Zelda ALBW LTD please??? Aqua or cream or someone?

Also, I would love to know the %ages for Just Dance 2014, Lego Marvel, Disney Infinity, and Skylanders across each platform if possible.

congrats to MS, nice work. they sold many more units than most people predicted/expected. yield issues? yeah right.. I still can't believe how many XB1 they managed to sell at that 499$ msrp

the thing here is, it's a 100$ more expensive console with such a bad press due to their proposal prior to the famous 180 move, but while most people expected to be bashed by PS4 due to being cheaper, more powerful and better press, but look what happened in the US. so, don't spin this achievement by saying Sony had shortages, because I've heard from many people that means PS4 was outselling XB1 by a far margin, but now it seems that Sony haven't sold more units because they weren't able to fulfill the demand, well, if that's the case, it's their fault. even if XB1 and PS4 sold the same units that would be a good sign for MS, being able to match their direct competitor by selling a more expensive and less powerful (in case that matters to everyone) with worse press.

I'm glad we're living a neck to neck situation, both of them will have to put more effort in order to win the market there, which only means good things to us.

Why are you posting the same exact thing twice? From the Major Nelson Thread:

I've thought about this, but the Xbox 360 version could actually turn out to be quite the help for the Xbox One version of the game. With so many Xbox 360 owners out there, what better advertisement could there be for a potential next gen version if the game really does turn out as good as hoped? Not like Titanfall suffers from a lack of word of mouth, but actual 360 owners having the game themselves might turn out to be the best form of advertisement for the even better next gen version.

You think if people are enjoying the game on there current console with a way bigger player base they are going to think you know what im going to go out and spend $500 plus the game again for a texture bump?.

Im going to say this. There is some serious delusion in this thread by people who think this months sales are indication of the next few months performance of either next gen console. Its rather bizarre how fast the mental narrative has been constructed.

The only thing that can be concluded from this thread is the vita is dead and the WiiU is on life support.

But please, continue. System Warzzz.

So just to put my thoughts down about the next few months before we get any indication of what is actually happening.

I think Xbox One is going to take a crazy dive in January. Somewhere between 100K and 200K sales for the month. PS4 is going to sell what they put out there. I assume they will be able to get at least 350k systems in the US in January.

Sony will catch up with demand either in late February or early March in the US. March will be the next month where XOne has a chance at defeating PS4 with Titanfall. I think that month will be really close with both consoles at around 300K.

I dont think anyone expected the usa box to do badly in the usa, we have numbers from everywhere else that show it is indeed getting a kicking most everywhere else.

I heard many people expecting to be outsold by PS4 (some even thinking Wii U would outsell it) and arguing that would be doing badly because the US market is MS's priority and best market, so being outsold by the competition would be a failure

It should concern you that we've never really seen people play the 360 version of a game that's supposed to come out in less than 2 months. I'm not even sure it exists.

I guess the PS3 dropping off like it did may get the hardware off shelves a bit faster than we expected? I assume it'd be replaced by PS4 hardware if it was.

Well, you can fit the whole world in your hand for 570k. And as for the rest, you dont want to know

So for SM3DW we have

US: 570k
JP: 485k (Famitsu)
FR: 98k (18k digital)

So we can assume it is at more than 1.2 mio worldwide. Quite a good attach rate I would say.

Looking at the numbers, I can give a decent estimate for how this gen will play out...

3DS is the next GBA. It won't outsell the DS, but it will make some pretty bank for Nintendo and its sales compared to the Vita's guarantee that Nintendo will be the sole surviving dedicated handheld maker. Any future competitor to Nintendo's dedicated handheld domination will come from the mobile sector, either Apple or a company using Android.
Wii U is the next GC. Nintendo needs to completely rethink their strategy or return to the Wii strategy.

PS4 has the potential to become the next PS2. If these sales are from a supply-constrained PS4 in the dominate region for the Xbox brand then Microsoft has screwed up big time and are allowing Sony to return to their former glory.
Vita is like any handheld against the GBA, utterly decimated and living on borrowed time. Best to just rebrand the Vita TV for America and make it a competitor to the Roku and Apple TV, if Sony even decides to bring it over to America, given Japanese sales.
PS3 is seeing bad sales, but it also needs a dang price drop. Isn't it like only half as much as the PS4 for the crappiest model?

XB1 needs to lose the Kinect and drop to $400 ASAP. That accessory is an albatross around the console's neck and will continue to be so as long as the system is more expensive than the PS4. Once PS4 stops being supply-constrained, PS4 could potentially become the worthy successor to the best-selling console ever and MS can't afford to allow that to happen.
360 is doing well most likely because the casuals who want Kinect are buying this system instead of the XB1. Again, MS should remove Kinect from the XB1, but they can still sell the accessory and make games around the accessory.

I'm pretty confused by this post. If I remember correctly, the 360 sold at least 15 million more in the US. Many people shouted how important retail launch exclusives were and how amazing the Xbone lineup was. Despite reducing the launch from 18 to 13 countries and being readily available, it's still behind the PS4 US LTD (which launched in 50 countries and is sold out everywhere in the US).

And you're trying to say that begging for sales parity benefits consumers....Really? If you really cared about us consumers, you would be hoping for a landslide.

Actually, if Vita/3DS multiplats routinely sell better on Vita over 3DS that leaves me to wonder if Sony has a future in the handheld arena afterall. I suspect what they may do next is some sort of dual OS thing where you can buy games from the Playstation store, or buy them from Google Play and run them in a sandboxed Android mode, and possibly dump carts entirely. Though I'd only think that's a good idea if they move to Micro SD cards or at least price their proprietary ones competitively.

If only anything else benefited from that attach rate =(. Maybe this new base of users will be far more engaged starting February thanks to Nintendo releasing some first party games.

Numbers are surprising - wouldn't have minded hard PS4 data but w/e. Can get a good idea

Stuffing the channel worked in the US at least. Kinda

I am still kinda surprise the Xbox One did not do 1 million with the abundance of stock they had.

Those we're my exact thoughts in the MN thread...

Plus they had a whole month with stock flooding the market and they still sold 1,000 units less than the prior month. These next few NPD's is where this should be getting really interesting.

Now also, there was some talk in another thread about the difference between the ps4 and xb1 was only 50k? Has that been substantiated? It would make sense since Sony announced that they still lead LTD in NA.

Yeah it sold about 865k.
Good to know, thanks!

OT: Has anyone seen the amazon best sellers for 2014 yet? I know it's still early, and January is a vastly different market compared to the christmas shopping period, but I think it's finally a good way to gauge demand between them on these best sellers lists, since everything starts at zero. For the better part of the new year, the PS4 was at #1 on the chart, and as of now it's 2nd to a only the $20 PSN gift card, all the while it has been in rolling stock for preorders. As of right now, the xb1 is currently at 12, and I believe it was at around 16-15 last week.
