Exclusive Invitation for an Xbox One Alpha Trial [Titanfall]

8-12 maps? C'mon people, what's with these low expectations?

I am not "expecting" anything. I am just simply saying that if for some reason they could only create so many maps then it would be fine as long as they are quality. I dont see how we can assume to know what has gone on in their dev process since it began or how, if any setbacks there were in taking this from a 360 title to a xbo title. I am simply saying that I dont believe 20 maps is something that should be staple law since its MP only.

I would love to be proven wrong though. If they could produce 20 GOOD quality maps by launch that would be amazing. But I just dont feel like it could be done on top of all the other things they had to do making this from scratch. I dont want a ton of baggage bad maps just for the sake of meeting an "expected" launch map number.

Give me 8 good ones, more than 15 mediocre ones.

I've liked what I've seen out of the 3 that they've shown, so far. If we can get ~10 like that, I'll be happy.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launched with 14 maps and like 12 of them completely fucking sucked ass.

give me 8 great ones and 8+ less than great ones for variety then.

You mean realistic?

They said they're not doing SP mode because they're focusing only on MP and the game have been in development for more than 3 years, so I think it's safe to assume that Respawn will deliver good number of maps. I'm thinking +15.

After putting in ~15 hours into the Alpha I can honestly say I am very excited for March :) with that said I think I am done earning xp that doesn't go towards anything. I find the best thing about this game is the lack of frustration I feel by traversing through the map. They seemed to have found a perfect balance

Actually it really is quality not quantity. of course 5 or 6 would be really low, but 8 to 12 wouldn't be bad for this sort of game. Halo's really good maps were almost infinitely replayable and never really got boring. Having 20 mediocre maps for the sake of variety would actually kill the replay value quicker due to them not having enough thought put into them.

just my opinion I guess. I would rather have 8-10 amazing replayable maps than a ton just for the sake of variety in visual appeal. The setting or visual of the map isn't really what makes it play so well.

I second this. I mean, yeah I would prefer 15-16 maps, since the focus on this game is solely on multiplayer. But unless they can make all maps really quality, there is no point having a large variety. I can't tell you how many MP games I've played, where huge chunks of the maps I did not like. It got to a point where I would dread playing them, and it was clear that other players felt the same way (since they would always get vetoed). If you are always vetoing and avoiding certain maps, then it really defeats the purpose. Might as well not even have the maps in the first place.

So I agree that quality comes first in this instance. And I would much rather have 12 really high quality maps vs. 16-18 with varying quality. Although I guess people would argue, they should be able to have 15+ maps and have them all be quality if MP is the main focus of this games dev. *shrugs*

EDIT: I kind of wish the game was just $40 at launch, and they just didn't focus on any other mode but MP (I think they are going to have a story/multiplayer hybrid mode).

I think Titanfall will live or die based on playing styles and how people choose to play the game en masse. From the alpha footage I've seen people are playing this like CoD, sprinting randomly across the map, flanking campers or shooting people from behind, little to no teamwork when it comes to choke points on the map. And with these elements who do you blame? The players or the designers who developed the core mechanics? CoD can be played tactically if the player base found that to be more efficient or fun, but the core gameplay of CoD easily supports the lone wolf style of shooting anything on sight.

The best evolution from CoD are the titans themselves, instead of tons of killstreaks that can wipe out players in really random ways there's one main "killstreak" all players get. Titans are huge targets, so getting killed by one won't feel like some sort of random blight. One worrying thing about Titanfall is human vs human combat, doesn't look that satisfying when compared to Titan vs. Titan combat.

The most worrying thing about Titanfall is how sustainable the player base will be. After playing for a couple or few months will people be ready to move onto the next big multiplayer release?

12 would be acceptable, 8 wouldn't, I'd get bored of 8 too quickly to justify the price.

Plus, there feels like a lot more strategy with the Titans, and teams getting Titans on the map quicker than their opponents. When you get 3 Titans and can take on 2 of the other teams Titan's, it starts to become a struggle of who controls the map with Titans. And this also puts more weight on racking up points and speeding up your Titanfall.

Whereas killstreaks just feel like one person dominating everyone else, and just getting insane power that just racks up on more kills and points (it almost feels broken).

Not worried at all about the maps. Respawn's portfolio:
Crash, Vacant, Overgrown, Crossfire, Ambush, Pipeline, Afghan, Favela, Highrise, Scrapyard, Terminal.

All solid maps, IMO. There were a few duds here and there but for the most part they have been amazing with their quality maps.

I'm really enjoying Angel City and Fracture so far, too.

Believe.

I really like Angel City. It's probably my favorite of the Alpha.

Fracture has some epic shootouts with the large empty spaces though. I've really enjoyed the flow of each map so far.

I really like the Assassin class and using shotguns. So I find myself favoring Angel City I guess. I get a lot of kills running around corridors and going through the buildings. Plus, I think Angel City is a pretty design. But yeah, Fracture is awesome too. I guess Angel City just plays to my playstyle a little better.

I think Fracture is better for Titan's though. You can get cornered a lot easier on that map. Whereas Fracture gives you the room to really boost out of there, and keep your enemies chasing after you. It's always great when you get a Titan (or Titan's ) chasing you, and you keep them on your heels, and lure them into a trap of 2 other Titan's on your team.

I've watched enough leaked footage now to know that I need this game in my life.

I honestly can't believe it's still just the two from yesterday that are floating around. I expected a bit more, at least maybe like a video for each map. Both are just from the same one.

I prefer Angel City purely based on the wall running. So satisfying :)

Yeah. I really like the way the city is set up, it makes it really fun wall running, and jumping into windows and running through building areas. There is a great flow to that level, and I think the wall running and jetpack stuff works really well on that map. It's a great map for scaling buildings. That's why I love using a Shotgun on that level. You can quickly scale buildings and bust through windows to shoot someone.

So satisfying.

All the positive impressions are hard to ignore, but I really just can't justify spending $60 on a multiplayer only game. I know that sentiment isn't well received here, but it's the truth for me.

Typically when I purchase shooters, I always go through the story first and take my time with it, and only dabble with the multiplayer afterwards on an on/off basis unless the multiplayer is incredibly addictive to me (Gears of War, Halo). Otherwise I probably play a total of 50 matches during my entire time of owning the game, instead replaying the campaign here and there whenever I get the urge to. So for me, MP only isn't a valuable investment as I'm afraid the initial fun and excitement will wear off quickly after...*sigh*.

I feel the same brother. But if it at least has offline / local MP with 4 player split-screen then I would be really happy. I have real friends to play in the same room so that would worth be $60.

I think there is a single player mode, but it's a hybrid with the multiplayer mode or something. Respawn mentioned it, but there isn't a lot of details on it. But yeah, it won't be a full blown story mode/

This game is the real deal. Super refreshing FPS gameplay. Can't get over how well it plays, from the way you traverse around the maps to the balance of combat, whether it's the weapons or human vs titan. This is the next big IP. Standby for Titanfall...

I thought you can't talk about the Alpha?

You can't. But they can't track down your X1 account, simply by you writing down text on a forum. The only way you would get caught, is if you recorded playing your game, or took pictures of the screen (and it shows your GT). And they aren't even banning accounts, they are just removing your access to the Alpha test if you get caught. Participants had to sign an NDA, but it's unrealistic to expect people to not talk about it. And it's already happened all around the net. We aren't allowed to post videos (not even youtube links) in this thread though. GAF mods aren't allowing it (presumably, because EA contacted them and told them to remove any content).

Honestly, given that 99% of the talk about this has been overwhelmingly positive, it's more hype and advertisement than anything else. It's only the leaked footage that is questionable, as it's not the final build, and it's not fair to judge a game in the context of it being an Alpha test.

give me 8 great ones and 8+ less than great ones for variety then.

But those 8 less than great ones would be time spent taking much needed attention away from the 8 great ones, which had the potential to be stupendous. Now, do you really want to be responsible for that? :p

In terms of map count: COD 4 had amazing maps, so I trust Respawn. In actuality, I don't need a huge count; I need great maps that can be replayed ad infinitum. Maps as good as Lockout, Midship, and Crash. Maps that just never get old.

Secondary question: should I watch the alpha footage or keep down the hype till the launch?

I don't even have an Xbox One (yet) but I saw a youtube video with the double jump and the wall running and dammit I like it. All they need is a slide something like Vanquish and an active reload like Gears and it'd be awesome.

Titanfall is like JSRF as FPS with guns and badass mechs -- love it.

Does ejecting also self-destruct your Titan? Or can you eject and still get back in?

Also, can you get crushed by friendly Titans?

You can leave your Titan at any time and get back in. You have options to make your Titan follow you or to hold still while on foot. Once you eject, that's it though. Eject means you have to leave because your health is too low. Eject only prompts when your Titan is about to die.

But you can leave your Titan at any time. In fact if someone is hiding in a building, you have to hop out your Titan and go kill the person. There is a perk that allows your Titan to blow up like a Nuke when it dies and it damages anyone near it.

No you can't get crushed by friendly Titans. All friendly fire is off.
